BENJAMIN'S POV

The wolf had been under my coat since before I left the pack house.

I'd meant to decide how to carry it. I hadn't. I put it inside my jacket against my ribs and walked across the compound and into the clinic hall.

Three days since she’d stitched me up. Three days since she’d looked at the wound and known exactly what it was.

The door to her office was open when I arrived. Alice was at the counter, reviewing a file, her back to me. She didn’t turn around.

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0121: He Didn't Look Back

Alice's POV"Dr. Watson, we need you in room two."I was already moving before the sentence finished — a boy, maybe seven, wrist bent wrong, his mother pale beside him. Stabilized, splinted, calm enough to stop crying by the time I was done. His mother thanked me twice on her way out.It was only once the bay emptied that I noticed the crate of supplies still sitting unopened by the door. Garrett had dropped it off. Not Benjamin. I stood there a second too long before I made myself move on.It wasn't only the crate. The small things had been pointing the same way for days. The security report came through a council runner now. The renovation inspection got postponed with no explanation. The standing Tuesday check on the children's ward — the one he used to show up for without either of us ever calling it an appointment — simply didn't happen. Nobody mentioned it. I noticed anyway.Lunch break rolled around, Morwen brought out two cups of tea. We sat a while before she said, "The Alpha

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0120: The Wrong Name

Alice's POVI woke up before sunrise. Got dressed in my usual outfit, a pair of blue jean and blouse, buttoned my coat, and gathered my work files. At the door I looked toward the path Benjamin used to take with breakfast — it was out of habit, more than anything else. It was Empty."Good," I said, to no one, and went to work. The groundskeeper was already out front, sweeping frost off the steps, humming something with no tune to it, like it was any other morning. It was, for him. I envied him for that. He didn’t have to think about the parent who were scared and waiting for the test results of their children to return. That was a weight I had to carry, among many other things. The clinic woke up slowly around me. A sprained ankle, some bloodwork, a boy who needed stitches and was trying so hard not to cry in front of his father.I knelt down to his level. "Hey. That's a pretty impressive cut. Good scar to show your friends.""Will it hurt?""A little. I'll be careful. Can you be brav

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0119: I Let Her Walk

BENJAMIN'S POVI had exactly four reasons to be near her door before breakfast, and I'd found every one of them before the sun was even up. Check the clinic roof. Carry the vaccination records over myself instead of handing them to someone who'd pass them off in under a minute. Ask Morwen whether the children's ward needed anything, and let the asking take the long way — past Alice's door right where I was sure she’d see me.Real work, all of it. First morning I counted the reasons together instead of one at a time, and saw what they added up to. I lay there and didn't reach for a fifth. That was the only thing I decided before I got up, and it was harder than anything waiting for me at the council hall. Her plant sat on the kitchen sill where the morning light could reach it. She'd kept it in her study back when she still lived here; I moved it out after, told myself the study got no sun.I filled a cup at the tap and watered it, the way I did every few days. She knew I still had it.

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0118: I Won't Run Quiet

Lisa's POVBy midmorning, I slowly made myself get up. Moving slow helped a little. Rather than focus on my pain, I decided to fold the laundry that had sat in the basket for two days now, one piece at a time, stopping whenever my back pulled tightly. I heard the door bell ring the first time and ignored it.“Mom? Someone is at the door,” Lily called. For a mom I thought it was Benjamin or that goody two shoes Callum but when I looked, it was a delivery man holding a package by the door. — there were supplies I'd ordered before any of this situation I was currently in, back when I still believed the morning in Benjamin's kitchen was going to end in something other than a public square and getting punished. “I’m coming, sweetie.”“Are you Ms. Lisa Scott? I have delivery for you,”I nodded mutely and he handed me a pen. I signed for it standing very straight so the delivery man wouldn't catch anything on my face, and shut the door before he could ask.Lily read on the couch nearby, gla

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0117: She Knew I Was lying

Lisa's POVI don’t know how long I was passed out for but I woke up on my bed, the pain was the first thing my mind registered. Thirty strokes, handed down with the council's full weight behind them — I didn't have to move to remember that, but I moved anyway, testing it, the way you press a bruise just to feel it answer. Halfway onto my side I stopped. The sheet had dried to my back where it never should have. So I lay flat and looked up at the ceiling until the worst of it eased off, and let yesterday come back the way it had happened — the square, the post, the crowd, and Lily's scream cutting through all of it like the one true thing in a day I'd built out of lies.A soft knock, and then Lily didn't wait for an answer. She came in with a tray held so careful in both hands — toast burnt at the edges, tea gone pale because she'd pulled it too soon, bandages stacked crooked on top like she hadn't known where else to set them. She'd done all of it herself. nine years old, and she'd

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0001:One Month Left

ALICE’S POVI hadn't slept. I'd counted his breaths instead. It had been four hours since Lucian collapsed at breakfast. • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0006: He is a Mistake

ALICE’S POVThe Blue Moon Festival was Lucian’s idea of heaven and my four-year plan of endurance. He’d been talking about it for weeks—the lanterns, the fireworks, the honey cakes from the booth near the stage. When he’d asked, he’d pressed both hands together like he was praying, eyes wide, and I
