The heavy wooden door of Room 302 felt less like an exit and more like the opening of a trap. Avery stood frozen, her fingers gripping her textbooks so tightly the cardboard corners dug into her palms. The crowded hallway of West Hall, usually a chaotic blur of rushing students and loud chatter, seemed to fade into a dull, distant hum.

Everything narrowed down to the towering figure stepping away from the stone wall.

Jake moved with a slow, predatory grace that completely contradicted his massive size. He was still wearing his black university track pants and a sleeveless training shirt, his broad shoulders and heavily tattooed arms glistening with a faint sheen of post-practice sweat. The sheer heat radiating from him seemed to warp the air, melting the chill of the building's air conditioning long before he reached her.

As he closed the distance, the students navigating the corridor naturally parted around him, casting curious, whispering glances at the star athlete. Jake didn’t look at a single one of them. His emerald-green eyes were locked entirely on Avery, burning with an intense, calculated focus that made her inner wolf scratch wildly against her mental restraints.

Calm down, Avery commanded herself, forcing her expression into a mask of polite, human annoyance. He is just an arrogant athlete. He doesn't know anything.

"Leaving so fast?" Jake asked, his voice dropping into that smooth, dangerously deep register that sent a violent tremor straight down her spine. He stopped just two feet away, completely cutting off her path toward the exit. "We didn't get to finish our conversation last night... Avery."

Avery swallowed the lump of panic rising in her throat. She forced herself to look up, meeting his piercing gaze with wide, blank eyes, projecting the perfect illusion of an ordinary girl being bothered by a campus jock.

"Do I know you?" she lied, keeping her pitch light and defensive. "And how exactly do you know my name?"

Jake tilted his head, a slow, knowing smile tugging at the corner of his sharp jawline. He leaned down slightly, invading her personal space just enough to let her inhale his scent—a intoxicating mix of cedarwood, rain, and raw masculine power. "I make it a point to know the names of people who crash into me in the dark. Especially when they leave a mess behind."

Avery frowned, her heartbeat hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "A mess? I didn't leave anything in that alley."

"Yes, you did," Jake murmured, his voice softening into something low and entirely possessive. His gaze dropped to her lips for a agonizing second before snapping back to her eyes. "You left me unable to think about anything else all damn night. Now... I think you owe me a proper introduction."

"Look, whoever you are," Avery said, taking a step back to re-establish her boundaries, though her soul screamed at the loss of his proximity. "It was an accident. It was dark, it was pouring, and I was just trying to get back to my dorm. I don't have time for whatever campus game you're playing."

"It's not a game," Jake countered, his eyes darkening as his wolf reacted to her rejection. The beast inside him hated when she pulled away. He reached into the pocket of his track pants, his large hand emerging with a small, delicate silver object. "You dropped this when you ran off."

Avery glanced down, her breath hitching. Resting on his broad, calloused palm was a tiny, intricately carved silver feather charm. It was a cheap trinket she had bought at a local market months ago, usually attached to the zipper of her backpack. She hadn't even realized it had torn off during their collision.

"My charm," she whispered, reaching out instinctively to take it.

The moment her bare fingers brushed against his palm, the universe seemed to shatter.

An electric shock, twice as violent as the night before, erupted from the point of contact. It ripped through Avery’s veins like liquid fire, melting the icy shroud of her scent masker for a fraction of a millisecond. Her inner wolf surged forward, letting out a desperate, echoing cry of Mate! that almost tore through her throat.

Jake gasped audibly, his fingers instantly curling around hers, locking her hand in his firm, warm grip. His green eyes flared a vibrant, glowing emerald as his chest heaved. He felt it again—the terrifying, beautiful peace that silenced the constant, roaring chaos of his Lycan nature. Her touch was an absolute drug. But as he tried to catch her scent through the shock wave, all his hyper-tuned senses picked up was the dull, infuriatingly human smell of cotton and vanilla.

Why? his mind roared in frustration. Why does a human make me feel like the world is standing still?

Avery ripped her hand out of his grip, trembling, her face pale as she clutched the silver charm to her chest. "T-thank you for returning it," she stammered, her human mask slipping for the first time. "I have to go."

"Wait," Jake commanded, his voice laced with a subtle hint of Alpha authority that made her knees want to buckle. He stepped forward, blocking her again, his mind racing to find a reason—any reason—to keep her from walking away. "You're a Classical Literature major, right?"

Avery blinked, caught off guard. "How do you know that?"

"I asked around," Jake admitted without a shred of shame, crossing his arms over his chest. "And it turns out, I'm in desperate need of your help. I'm failing my advanced lit seminar. If my GPA drops below a 2.5 by the end of the month, the athletic board benches me for the rest of the season. I need a tutor. And I want it to be you."

"Thank you, Jake," she choked out, her voice cracking as she forced a small, tragic smile onto her face. "It's beautiful."Friday night arrived, cloaked in a freezing, heavy downpour that slicked the long, winding driveway of the Sterling Estate. The massive, neoclassical mansion was ablaze with thousands of golden lights, its grand stone pillars flanked by a fleet of luxury towncars and black SUVs.Inside the grand ballroom, the atmosphere was a masterclass in high-society illusion. Hundreds of wealthy human trustees, politicians, and university board members drifted across the polished marble floors, sipping champagne beneath massive crystal chandeliers. But beneath the surface of the classical orchestra music, the air was vibrating with a different kind of energy. Avery could feel it the moment she walked through the double doors—the sharp, territorial tension of dozens of high-ranking Lycan pack members disguised in custom tuxedos and evening gowns."You look absolutely spectac

The glass vial felt like a block of solid ice inside the pocket of Avery’s gray hoodie. She stood in the center of her small dorm room, her eyes fixed on the folded piece of heavy parchment lying on her desk. The ruthless handwriting of Alpha King Magnus seemed to burn through the paper, projecting an invisible clock that was ticking down the seconds of her brother’s life.“Bring my son home, Avery. If he is not in the vehicle when the gala ends... Leo’s head will be delivered to your dorm room by midnight.”A shuddering breath escaped her lips. She had no choice. She had never had a choice. To save Leo, she had to play her part in this deadly theater perfectly. She reached out, her fingers wrapping around the cold glass of the neural block before sliding it into the hidden inner pocket of her small evening clutch. She had already texted Cole, formally accepting his invitation to the Sterling charity gala. It was the perfect human cover. Escorting the rival pack’s son would place h

On Tuesday morning, the reality of the outside world caught up with her. Avery was walking down the stone arches of the quad, her backpack slung over her shoulder, when a tall figure stepped out from behind a concrete pillar, blocking her path."You're a hard woman to find these days, Avery."Cole Sterling stood before her, his hands shoved casually into the pockets of his dark leather jacket. The morning sun caught his blonde hair, and his piercing blue eyes locked onto her face. He still believed she was entirely human, but his inner Alpha beast was pacing beneath his skin, intensely drawn to the hidden, fierce fire he felt radiating from her.Avery stopped, her instincts immediately going on high alert. "Cole. I thought I made myself clear after the courtyard. I don't want to get involved.""I'm not here to start a fight," Cole said quietly, stepping a polite half-step closer. He studied her features, trying to decode the mysterious pull she had on him. "I know Jake’s been kee

The world inside the dimly lit apartment came to an absolute, terrifying standstill.Jake’s massive hands were clamped around Avery’s shoulders like twin vices, his grip firm but careful not to crush her. His bare chest heaved with a ragged, uneven breath, the heat radiating from his skin so intense it felt like a furnace. His green eyes were entirely gone, replaced by two glowing, hypnotic pools of emerald fire that burned straight through the darkness, anchoring her to the floor."You're not human," Jake breathed, his voice dropping into a low, rumbles that vibrated directly against her ribcage. The ancient, possessive authority of his Alpha lineage bled into every single syllable. "Avery... what the hell are you?"Avery’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. Her mind was racing at a mile a minute, frantically scrambling for a solution. She looked down at his chest, realizing that her scent masker had temporarily failed under the sheer, suffocating pressure of the

Jake slammed his fist against the plastic armrest of his seat, cracking the cheap material beneath his hidden Lycan strength. He knew exactly what Cole was doing. Cole was purposely sabotaging the game, showing the athletic directors and the scouts how completely broken the team was without their star forward. He was punishing Jake, ruining his basketball career from the inside out, all while maintaining the act of a hard-working player who just lacked support.By the time the final buzzer echoed through the stadium, the scoreboard read 82-72. Loss. The arena erupted into disappointed murmurs as the players trudged toward the locker rooms. Cole paused on the baseline, wiping the sweat from his blonde hair. He looked up at Jake one last time, tapping his chest twice and flashing a cruel, triumphant grin before disappearing down the tunnel. An hour later, the heavy oak door of Jake's off-campus apartment swung open with a violent shudder.Jake marched into the dimly lit living room,

The silence in the dimly lit auxiliary gym was heavy, broken only by the low, electrical hum of the single spotlight vibrating above them. Jake stepped fully into her personal space, his towering, bare chest casting a massive shadow that completely swallowed Avery’s smaller frame. He leaned down, his piercing green eyes burning with a sudden, sharp intelligence that made her stomach drop."Avery," Jake murmured, his voice dropping into a dark, calculating register that sent a chill straight down her spine. "Who the hell are you really?"Avery felt the air catch in her throat. For a terrifying second, she wondered if her silver scent masker had finally failed. Had he smelled her wolf? Had he realized that the quiet, fragile human girl who cowered in the library was actually a Lycan spy sent by his tyrannical father? If she panicked now, if she showed even a fraction of submission, his Alpha instincts would decode her illusion in a heartbeat. She took a deep, steadying breath, forcin
