I lay awake thinking about what could possibly have my dad so upset that he walked out of dinner without a single word. Mom always makes such a big deal about us eating together every night as a family. Sometimes it’s our only time together during the week. What’s more nerve wracking is the fact that she didn’t scold him, didn’t say a word. Mom has no problem putting Dad in his place. Ever. Which is quite entertaining when your dad’s job is bossing everyone around and running a pack of werewolves flawlessly. But the look she gave him? It’s got me restless tonight. The last time I saw that look in her eyes, we were attacked the very next day. I was only 10, but I remember it like yesterday. The rogues from the mountains attacked the south border. Somehow our Gamma found out as he was running from a neighboring pack and overheard some idiot talking about “Black Forest’s weak spot”. Let’s just say it wasn’t weak much longer, but we still lost three warriors. So now I’m staring at my ceiling, listening for anything. Because of my alpha blood, my wolf came a year early. I’m only 17, but I was stoked when I got my built in best friend last August. It’s hard to believe I’ve only known Knight for 6 months. It feels like he’s always been with me. “Our pack is strong. No one will harm us. If they try, they will face the consequences.” He tells me. “I know. I just hate thinking Mom is worried and Dad is in danger. Especially when I should be helping,” I tell him. “All in good time. We have many fights ahead.” Not sure if that’s supposed to reassure me, but it definitely doesn’t. Dad has been training me basically since I was born to be the best alpha I can be. Since Knight came along, there’s a lot more that I can do. I’ll have to take full responsibility for the pack by the time I’m 21, so I devote myself to whatever Dad assigns me to do. Right now, my biggest task is training all the younger warriors 21 and under. It’s honestly more fun than work since I enjoy training. Plus it’s a ton of fun to show off and teach some of these guys who the strongest is. I hear the door close from the stairwell and immediately go to my door to listen. We have the top floor of the pack house to ourselves. It honestly feels like a house of its own. Everything we could want is up here: living area, kitchen, balcony overlooking the property. “Our own oasis,” as my mom says. “Did they get here safely?” I hear my mom ask. “Yeah. John looked like shit. Not that I can blame him. I’m just surprised he left instead of ripping that bastard’s head off.” “Cam, you know that wasn’t an option. He made the right choice. They are safe now. Did they join tonight, or will that be tomorrow?” “We went ahead and took care of it. The daughter won’t be 18 till July. We will have her join after she gets her wolf.” “She’s still 17? My word. As if it couldn’t get any worse. That poor child. I’ll go by and check on them tomorrow.” “Just remember she’s still skittish. She sensed who I was and immediately shied away from me. I guess it just validates what we already knew.” “Poor child. When will John start work?” “I told him to take his time. We could really use his skills around here. I’ll never forget how quick he patched up Tom last year. I don’t know what we would have done if it wasn’t for him. Definitely would be down a Gamma.” “I know. Plus with Dr. Orion retiring next month, this couldn’t have come at a better time for us. Do you think White Fang will retaliate?” “Only time will tell. Let’s just hope this all blows over. We can always use the excuse that Laura and Cammie were sisters and this is just a way to let the girl know more about her mom. No need to worry any more tonight. Let’s go get some sleep.” I hear them walk towards the other end of the floor and shut the door. I sit on my floor, thinking about what I just heard. White Fang? The pack that neighbors our East border? What could possibly be going on in that tiny backwater place? I know my dad and Alpha Walt do not get along at all, but they’ve always kept the peace for the sake of the packs. No need to attack somebody over ego. I know Luna Avery died last week. Mom and Dad sent gifts out of respect. She was a great lady who sadly got chosen by a hothead jerk who thinks he’s better than everyone. Rumor has it he rejected his chosen mate for being “too weak”. It drove her crazy to the point that she had to be isolated for her own safety. He chose Luna Avery because she was young and pretty. Apparently that didn’t stop him from having a few side chicks as well. I heard he would cheat just to hurt Luna Avery if she stepped out of line or did something without his permission. There’s tons of allegations about White Fang and Alpha Walt that go around our pack, but Dad always tells me to judge someone based on what I know, not what I’ve heard. I plan to investigate some tomorrow. If I’m going to be the best alpha I can be, then I need to know any potential threats, and, more importantly, their weaknesses.~Brady~Jagger comes to dinner before Lindsey. A part of me is nervous; weren’t they supposed to be together? I search the room for Logan but can’t find him either. My brain is fighting itself: one side coming up with excuses for her and one side thinking the worst. That’s when I smell her: vanilla and lavender. I turn towards the door and see her eyes heavy with exhaustion. They brighten when she meets my eyes. She walks over to me and wraps her arms around me, laying her head on my chest. “Hey.”“Hey. You ok? You look tired.” I can’t help but sound concerned. “If it’s too much, I can-“She gently kisses my lips. “I’m fine. Can we talk after dinner?” I nod in approval. My parents come in shortly after and start dinner service. Lindsey sits with Deanna and Callie, planning Callie’s upcoming mating ceremony. I notice Willow is not with them. “She’s with Hunter. Apparently she’s not spending as much time with them anymore.” Logan interrupts my thoughts. “Who?” I ask, though I alrea
~Lindsey~ “Hmmm. What about this one? She hails from Dark Paw. That’s where Luna Maci and her sister Darla were from.” I point to a lively looking she wolf. Kiera Mavis: age 19, blue eyes, red hair, likes hunting. “I don’t know. She looks a little crazy.” Jagger focuses on her face, a worrisome look on his brow. “This feels insane. Like I’m going back to the olden days with mail order brides.” He collapses in a chair and buries his face in his hands. I want to walk over and encourage him, but I’ve been told no physical contact. Nothing that can be taken the wrong way. I sigh, hugging myself instead. “I know. It’s hard, but you and your pack need a luna. Remember, we’re just weeding out the candidates that you aren’t interested in.” “Make that all of them.” He mutters, looking down at the plethora of applications in front of him. So many she wolves wanting to be a luna. “Oh don’t be like that.” I sit beside him but keep a safe distance away. “Let’s keep looking. Give me your
~Brady~ One normal week would be nice. Instead, I’m dragging my mate and her friend to the packhouse because she’s needed in “finding Jagger a mate”. Allegedly. I can hardly believe that there’s no one more qualified than Lindsey to help him. Colton, in jest, suggested it, but now Hunter is using it as an opportunity to bring the two of them together. He’s convinced Jagger somehow that it will help him overcome his feelings for Lindsey. Sadly, allies are known to do this. My mother is old enough to be these girls’ mother, and no neighboring packs have young lunas. Lindsey is my claimed, and probably fated, mate. Thus she has the title of rising luna, making her the most eligible option. I explain the logistics of this to Lindsey and Callie as we drive. I notice Callie getting visibly uncomfortable. “I don’t like this. It seems like a set up.” Callie looks at me in the rear view mirror. That just confirms that my gut instincts are right. “Jagger would never hurt me or cros
~Lindsey~“That’s a wrap. Good job today everyone!” I crash onto the floor, gasping for air. “Holy shit my legs feel like they’re on fire.” I pant. “Yeah I have no clue how I’m going to get up. How did everyone from morning training survive?” Callie dramatically sprawls herself onto the floor like a starfish beside me. “Oh come on you two. It wasn’t that bad.” Callie and I both shoot Deanna looks of annoyance. Curse her for being in such good shape. “Ok it was rough, but that just means we’re better prepared! I hear shifters are getting a double dose today. We’re practicing in human form this afternoon.” She tilts her head as Callie lets out a groan. “You’re probably sore from other reasons, too. Huh Callie?” I nudge her playfully. “Oh my gosh. Shut up Lindsey. You’re so embarrassing.” She sits up and covers her face in shame. “Girl you smell exactly like Trey. There’s no denying it. You sleep over or something?” Deanna winks. “No. He’s finishing up some changes on our home.
~Brady~Nauseous is an understatement. I thought we were past this. I believed we were past this. But now? Seeing Lindsey and Jagger embrace so intimately has me feeling sick in more ways than one. I’ve got a million questions flooding my brain though my chaos remains hidden behind a mask of steel. Does she still love him? Does she want him?Did his confession change how she felt?Does she still want me?“Oh shut up. We should’ve kicked his ass out of our pack weeks ago!” Knight growls in the back of my mind. Colton stands beside me and mind links me. “Dude I feel your frustration, but you know Lindsey. You gotta trust her. Those two idiots are her childhood friends.”“One of whom she conveniently fucked?” I link back. “Yes but forget that for a second. You know she’s got a huge heart. They’re preying on her sympathy. You’re covered in blood and scratches. Play the same card after John takes over.”Despite myself, my eyebrow cocks. He may look dull, but Colton has recently becom
~Lindsey~ Dad and I finally got to go home after weeks of living in the packhouse. The peacefulness of living in a house that you have to yourself instead of the hustle and bustle of the packhouse is refreshing. I got approval to miss dinner tonight so that Dad and I could have some time alone. I’m stirring the alfredo sauce so that it stays smooth while making sure the pasta doesn’t boil over. Dad is out back grilling the chicken. We sit down to eat which feels bizarre after having so many public meals. Something about this feels private, personal. Like it’s a moment that was crafted just for us. We chat about our day, all the craziness that has happened recently, and the spring pack party that I helped plan. I’m really enjoying feeling like things are going to normal when I see the blood drain from Dad’s face. “What’s wrong?” I reach out and touch Dad’s hand, concerned. I’m sure he’s just gotten a mind link. “I need you to come with me quickly. But you need to be prepared. It
~Lindsey~ Deanna is trying to wake us up. We’re all groggy; sleep isn’t ready to let me go yet. “Guys we’re gonna miss breakfast. And I’ve got to head to training.” She says, frustrated. “Have fun. I’ll eat lunch. It’s time to sleep right now.” I fluff my pillow, still exhausted. I heard Dea
~Brady~ I feel Lindsey climb into my lap where she’s met immediately by something that’s growing harder by the second. She’s so hot; her body responds immediately to mine. It’s like we’re in perfect sync. I place my hands on her hips, pulling her closer to me. My desire for her is intense: all I
~Lindsey~ The sun is starting to set, and Brady is heading far out from the city. If I didn’t trust him I’d think he was dragging me to the middle of nowhere to leave me stranded. He looks like a kid at Christmas; he’s got this huge smile on his face. He’s so cute sometimes. I try not to slouch
~Brady~ Damn Lindsey looks good. She’s got on these jeans that hug her curves, but they don’t look too tight. Her sweater has green stripes which complement her eyes. She obviously isn’t trying to seduce me, which is nice. A little modesty is kind of hot since I usually get approached by she
