CHAPTER 4: The Consummation Clause

~ Kim ~

Dinner that night was torture.

The entire family had gathered — my parents, Elena, Richard, and Richard's mother, Catherine Fell. She was an elegant woman in her sixties with silver hair styled in a classic updo and sharp green eyes that seemed to see everything.

The dining room was massive, all dark wood paneling and crystal chandeliers dripping with light. The kind of room designed to remind you of your place in the hierarchy.

I sat between my mother and Elena, directly across from Richard. I kept my eyes on my plate, but I could feel him staring at me with what I could only describe as cold fury.

I didn't blame him. I'd broken into his cabin, seen him naked, and left him standing there in a towel.

But he'd been an asshole to me at the café, so as far as I was concerned, we were even.

I risked a glance up and immediately regretted it.

He was looking at me with such unconcealed contempt that it felt like a physical blow. His jaw was tight, his eyes chips of ice. Like I was something distasteful he'd been forced to endure.

Maybe I was.

I looked away quickly, my appetite gone despite the elaborate meal spread before us.

"So," my father said with forced cheer, cutting into his steak. "Tomorrow's the big day. Are you both prepared?"

"Yes," Richard said tersely. He hadn't touched his food either, I noticed.

Elena reached over and squeezed his hand where it rested on the table.

"I'm sure it will be lovely," my mother chimed in with brittle brightness. "Simple and elegant, just like we discussed."

Simple. That was one way to describe a bonding ceremony where the bride was there under duress.

"I insist on artificial insemination," Richard said suddenly, his voice cutting through the polite dinner conversation. "Instead of... traditional methods... to conceive the heir."

The table went silent.

I felt like I'd been slapped.

"Oh my God, Richard, that's brilliant!" Elena said, her whole face lighting up. "Why didn't we think of that sooner? That way you won't have to..." She cut herself off, but we all knew what she'd been about to say.

That way you won't have to touch her.

A tiny, traitorous part of me whispered that I didn't want him to touch me either. That this was a relief.

But it wasn't a relief. It was humiliating.

I forced myself to meet Richard's gaze across the table, to keep my voice steady. "That sounds perfectly reasonable to me. We can schedule an appointment with a fertility specialist right away."

Two could play this game. I wouldn't let him see how much his casual rejection stung.

His eyes narrowed slightly, like he'd expected me to argue or get emotional.

Good. Let him be surprised.

"Actually," Catherine Fell said quietly, and something in her tone made everyone turn to look at her. "That won't be possible."

"Mother..." Richard started, warning in his voice.

"Let me finish." She set down her wine glass with deliberate care, the crystal ringing softly against the table. "Richard, I understand your desire to remain faithful to Elena in every possible way. I respect that loyalty. But there are laws that even an Alpha cannot ignore."

My stomach dropped.

"What are you saying?" Richard demanded, his voice dangerously low.

"I'm saying that according to the pack bond law, the secondary mating must be consummated naturally for it to be recognized." Catherine looked between Richard and me, her expression sympathetic but firm. "The law requires more than just a ceremony. It requires the physical union of the bloodlines — joined in the traditional way. Without consummation, there is no bond. Without a bond, any offspring produced through artificial means wouldn't be recognized as legitimate heirs."

The room erupted.

"That's ridiculous..." Richard started.

"Absolutely not..." Elena said at the same time, her voice rising in pitch.

"Mother, you can't be serious," Richard pushed back from the table, his chair scraping loudly against the floor.

"I'm completely serious." Catherine's voice cut through the chaos like a blade. "The pack bond law was created by our ancestors for specific reasons. A bond without natural consummation is not recognized by wolf instinct or pack tradition. Which means any heir produced through artificial means would not be considered legitimate in the eyes of the pack."

"This is barbaric," my father muttered.

"This is tradition," Catherine countered. "And tradition exists because it's built into our very nature as wolves. The Alpha must claim his mate. The bond must be sealed through the joining of bodies. It's not about morality or feelings — it's about the fundamental nature of what we are."

Richard's face had gone pale. "You're saying I have to…"

"One night," Catherine said firmly. "That's all the law requires. One proper consummation to make the bond binding. After that..." She spread her hands. After that..." She spread her hands. "After that, you can proceed however you wish. IVF, separate bedrooms, whatever arrangement you want. But you have to have sex or the entire bond fails."

I looked at Elena. She'd gone completely white, her hands trembling as she pressed them against the table. She looked like she might be sick.

I knew how she felt.

"This isn't right," Elena whispered, tears spilling down her perfect cheeks. "This isn't fair."

"Fair or not, it's the law." Catherine's voice was gentle but unyielding.

Richard stood abruptly, his whole body vibrating with barely contained rage or anguish — I couldn't tell which. "May I be excused?"

He didn't wait for an answer. He just walked out, his footsteps echoing in the sudden silence.

Elena stood too, her chair nearly toppling backward. "Excuse me."

She fled from the room, her crying echoing through the halls.

I sat there frozen.

"Kim," my mother said quietly, her hand covering mine. "Are you alright?"

Was I alright?

I wanted to laugh. I wanted to scream. I wanted to run back to the Rogue Space because at least there, I'd known what kind of hell I was living in.

"I'm fine," I lied, standing on legs that felt like water. "May I be excused as well?"

"Of course, dear."

I walked out of the dining room with my spine straight and my head high. Made it all the way up the stairs and into my room before my knees gave out.

I sank onto the bed, staring at the wall, and tried not to think about tomorrow night.

Tried and failed spectacularly.

I couldn't sleep.

How could I? In less than twelve hours, I'd be standing in front of the pack, bonding myself to a man who despised me.

I threw off the covers and padded barefoot downstairs. The house was dark and silent — everyone else asleep, probably dreaming of tomorrow's ceremony.

I headed straight for the bar.

The liquor cabinet was impressive — rows of expensive bottles. I grabbed the first bottle my fingers touched. Scotch. Good enough.

I didn't bother with a glass.

The first swig burned going down, harsh and unforgiving. Perfect. I took another, then another, letting the warmth spread through my chest and blur the sharp edges of my thoughts.

Four years in prison. Four years of suppression and isolation and hunger. And for what? To end up here. To be traded like property. To give my body to a man who hated me.

I laughed, the sound bitter and sharp in the darkness, and took another long drink.

The bottle was nearly half empty when I finally pushed away from the bar. The room tilted slightly as I stood. Good. I wanted the blur, didn't want to think about tomorrow.

I made it to the base of the grand staircase before my body collided with something solid.

Someone solid.

Large hands caught my shoulders, steadying me. I looked up, my vision doubling slightly, and groaned.

Of course.

"You," I said, my tongue thick with alcohol. "Why the hell are you still awake?"

Alpha Richard Fell stared down at me, and even through my drunken haze, I could see he was in rough shape too. His eyes were bloodshot, his hair disheveled. He smelled like whiskey and misery.

"You again," he said roughly, his words slightly slurred. "Perfect. Just fucking perfect."

I tried to push past him, but he was immovable. Just stood there like a wall, glaring down at me with those blue eyes that seemed to see too much.

"Move," I demanded.

"You're drunk."

"So are you," I shot back. "What's your point?"

His jaw clenched. "My point is that you should go to bed before you do something stupid."

I laughed, harsh and ugly. "Stupid? Like agreeing to bond with you? Too late for that, Alpha. That ship has sailed." I stepped closer, emboldened by scotch and four years of suppressed rage. "Or are you talking about tomorrow night? Is that the stupid thing I'm about to do? Letting you claim me? Fuck me? Is that what bothers you so much?"

His eyes flashed gold — his wolf rising. "Watch your mouth."

"Why?" I poked his chest, each word punctuated by another jab. "You don't get to tell me what to do. Not yet. I'm not your mate until tomorrow. And even then, I'm not really yours, am I? I'm just the incubator. The backup plan. The unfortunate necessity you have to suffer through  to get what you really want."

"Stop talking," he growled, the Alpha command rolling through his voice.

But the collar around my neck absorbed most of it, and what little got through just made me angrier.

"Make me." The words came out before I could stop them. Reckless. Stupid.

Perfect.

His eyes blazed gold. “You arrogant wolf.”

He stepped closer, fury radiating from him as he towered over me. I tilted my chin up, glaring back with equal defiance, refusing to yield an inch.

We were close enough that I noticed every sharp line of his face, the storm brewing in his golden eyes, the way his lips parted ever so slightly. My anger tangled with something hotter, stranger, curling low in my stomach.

His gaze dropped to my lips.

My breath caught.

When I looked back up, he was already watching mine with an intensity that sent heat rushing through me.

The air between us thickened, charged and dangerous.

Slowly, deliberately, his hands rose to cup my face.

My pulse thundered.

‘Yes,’ Rachel sighed. ‘Finally.’

He leaned in, inch by inch, his face drawing closer like he meant to kiss me.

Without thinking, I closed my eyes, breath hitching in anticipation.

I did not try to push any further.Catherine made it clear that we had to be on this walk for at least an hour and a half.
