The whispers did not stay quiet for long.

By the middle of the day the pack house was filled with people talking about me. Every time I walked by people would look at me. They would glance at me when they thought I was not looking. They would stare at me when they thought I was looking. The people who worked in the kitchens the omegas, kept their heads down. I could tell they were talking about me. The warriors who were training stopped what they were doing to watch me walk by. Even the elders, who usually acted like they were too important to care about gossip looked at me for a little long when I walked by the great hall.

I felt like I was being watched all the time. It was like someone was poking me with needles.

Damon felt it too. I could tell because his shoulders were tight all morning and he kept looking around the rooms before we went in. He also kept his hand near my back not touching me but close enough to push me behind him if something bad happened.

We practiced fighting in the private yard. This time there was no kissing or touching. We just focused on fighting. Damon pushed me harder than he did the day. I pushed back harder than I thought I could. The light came easier now. It still hurt a lot. It was white and bright and angry.

I was able to hold the light for ten seconds before the pain made me fall to my knees. Damon caught me before I hit the ground. He did not say much he just held me until I could breathe normally. Then he helped me stand up.

"You are getting stronger " he said quietly. "You are getting faster."

"Yes " I said, wiping the sweat from my face. ". I am still not fast enough."

He did not argue with me. He just looked at me like he was seeing something every time I stood up.

We did not talk about what people were saying about us. Not yet.. I could feel the tension between us. It was like there was smoke in the air.

It finally came out before dinner.

We were walking into the hall Damon first and me behind him when Marcus stepped in front of us. He was one of the warriors, big and scarred and he had been in the pack since before Damons father was the leader. He never liked me. He never tried to hide it.

He looked at Damon at me then back at Damon.

"Leader " he said, his voice loud for everyone in the hall to hear. "I need to talk to you."

Damon stopped walking. His body became still like it did when he was about to fight someone. "What is it?" he said.

Marcus did not back down. "The pack is asking questions about her " he said, nodding his head towards me. "They want to know why the bond between you and her broke why she is sleeping in your quarters. Why she is training with you like she is one of us."

The hall became very quiet. You could have heard a pin drop on the stone floor.

Damons voice was low and dangerous. "What are they asking, Marcus?" he said.

Marcus finally looked at me his eyes hard. "They are asking if she is really without a wolf if she is hiding something if the bond between you is real or just a trick."

There was a murmur in the room not loud, but enough to be heard.

My wolf growled inside me low and ready.

Damon stepped forward slow and deliberate until he was right in Marcuss face.

"The bond is real " he said, each word. Sharp. "The Moon Goddess does not make mistakes. If anyone in this room thinks otherwise they can come forward and say it to my face."

No one moved.

Marcus swallowed. "Leader we are just concerned—"

Damon cut him off. "You are concerned?" he said, his laugh sharp. "You are concerned about the safety of this pack or concerned that the omega you have all been treating badly for ten years might actually be stronger than you thought?"

Marcus opened his mouth then closed it.

Damon leaned in closer his voice low. "If anyone touches her looks at her wrong or talks about her like she is less than pack again I will kill them slowly. I will make sure everyone watches."

He stood up straight. Looked around the hall one more time.

"Does anyone have something to say?"

There was silence.

Damon nodded once then took my wrist and pulled me past Marcus past the staring faces and to the head table.

We sat down. He did not let go of my wrist until we were both seated.

The hall stayed quiet for the rest of the meal.

I could feel the eyes on me and I could feel the tension in the air.

After dinner back in his quarters Damon locked the door. Turned to me.

"Are you okay?" he asked.

I laughed, short and bitter. "They hate me now than they ever did."

Damon said, "They are scared of you now that is different."

I said, "Yeah scared people do things."

He stepped closer. "They will not touch you."

I said, "You cannot promise that."

Damon said, "I can promise I will kill anyone who tries."

I looked up at him. Saw the truth in his eyes the same truth that scared me the day before.

I said quietly "I do not want you killing for me."

Damon said, "I know, but I will anyway."

I did not pull away.

The bond between us was warm and heavy unbreakable.

Outside the whispers kept spreading.

Inside these walls something else was growing.

Something that might be stronger, than fear.

Might get us both killed.

  • The Alpha's Wolfless mate    Chapter 28 – The Quiet Before

The days after the ritual felt really normal which was almost worse than all the things that happened.I woke up every morning with Damons arm around me his breath warm on the back of my neck and for a seconds everything felt okay. The bad thing inside me was still there a little knot behind my ribs but it was quieter now. Weaker. It did not. Give me bad dreams every night. It just waited. It whispered to me when I was tired or angry or alone. It said mean things that sounded like my thoughts. They are watching you. Waiting for you to make a mistake.Damon says he loves you. He will see the bad person you can be eventually.I tried to ignore it every time. I focused on Damons heartbeat. On the way his fingers touched my skin when he thought I was asleep. On the connection between us that felt stronger since the ritual like our love had made some of the bad things go away. The bad thing inside me was patient. The fighting outside our walls was not.We spent the week getting ready. We t

  • The Alpha's Wolfless mate    Chapter 27 – The Ritual

The decision to do the ritual happened fast. We could not wait anymore. The seed was getting worse. It did not wait for me to be tired or distracted. It spoke to me during the day in the middle of conversations while I was eating while I was training. Sometimes it was a cold feeling. Sometimes it was a voice that sounded like mine saying things I did not want to think about. They are all waiting for you to fail. Damon says he loves you. He will leave when you become something he can not control. Why fight for people who never fought for you?I started waking up in the middle of the night with my hands around my throat like I was trying to stop the whispers from coming out. Damon would wake up with me every time pulling my hands away gently holding me until the shaking stopped. He never got angry. He never looked at me like I was broken. He just held me. Whispered that he was there that I was still me that we would beat this.. I could see the fear in his eyes when he thought I was not

  • The Alpha's Wolfless mate    Chapter 26 – The Edge of Me

The seed was taking over.I could feel the seed every second now like a second heartbeat that beat just a little out of rhythm with my own heartbeat. The seed did not shout at me anymore. The seed whispered to me. Constantly. The seed made suggestions that sounded almost like my own thoughts. The seed told me that the people around me do not really trust me. The seed said that they are waiting for me to fail. The seed asked me why I fight hard for people who spent years wishing I was dead.I started avoiding the people around me.During training I kept to the edges working alone or only with Damon. In the hall I sat quietly eating fast and leaving early. Even Lilas worried glances started to feel too heavy for me. I smiled at Lila when I could. The smiles felt fake to me stretched too thin.Damon noticed everything that was happening to me.He did not push me at first. He just stayed close to me. His hand was on my back when we walked. His arm was around me at night. He gave me kisses

  • The Alpha's Wolfless mate    Chapter 25 – The Breaking Point

The seed did not give me any peace. It followed me everywhere now. During training the seed was there. While I was eating the seed was there. In the quiet moments when I tried to steal a few seconds alone the seed was there. It was always there like a pulse under my own heartbeat, cold and patient and whispering things I did not want to hear.I started avoiding mirrors because every time I caught my reflection my eyes looked a little darker. Not the warm brown I was used to. Something sharper something hungrier. I told myself it was exhaustion. The pack was still. We were training harder than ever. Sleep was rare and broken.. Deep down I knew it was not just that. The seed was changing me. I could feel it.One evening I was alone in the clearing behind the pack house trying to meditate like Mara had suggested. The air was cool. The sun was just beginning to set, painting the sky in soft oranges and pinks. I sat cross-legged on the grass. Closed my eyes focusing on my breathing. In, ou

  • The Alpha's Wolfless mate    Chapter 24 – Shadows Inside

The next few days were a blur.We kept burying our dead. We kept fixing the walls. We kept training until we were too tired to move.Every night I fell asleep in Damons arms. I tried not to think about the thing growing inside my chest. It felt like a darker heartbeat. It started small.I felt a spot behind my ribs. A quiet chill that wouldn't go away.Damon held me close. It didn't help. Then it spread.Little tendrils of darkness made my wolf restless.She. Growled, even when there was no threat around us.Sometimes I stared at nothing.I got lost in memories that didn't feel like mine.I remembered fire. My moms voice. My dad casting a spell with his breath.I didn't tell Damon how bad it was getting. Not at first. He knew. Our bond told him.One night after a day of training we lay in bed.The room was dark except for the moonlight.Damons arm was around me.His chest was pressed to my back. His breath was warm against my neck. His hand rested on my stomach. He moved his thumb in

The sky was a gray and it looked like it was going to rain. The air was thick. It felt like nobody was breathing. We walked out of the pack house. I could feel my heart beating fast. I could feel it in my teeth and my fingers. Damon was walking next to me. He would touch my back every now and then

The pack house smelled like smoke and iron and fear when we got back.We did not bother cleaning up. Damons shirt was torn across the chest blood drying in patches. Some of his, most not of his.
