Chapter 1

Prologue – Strangers Passing Through

妊娠が判明した最初の月、私は嬉しさのあまり真っ先に斎藤誠人（さいとう まこと）にそのことを伝えた。

だが、そのときの彼の反応はとても奇妙だった。

まるで喜ぶどころか、眉をひそめてずっと暗い顔をしていた。

私が「いつ結婚してくれるの？」と尋ねると、彼はあからさまに話題を逸らし始めた。

そして今日、私は一人で産婦人科へ健診に行った。

病院で偶然、誠人の幼なじみ・高橋優香（たかはし ゆうか）と鉢合わせた。

その瞬間に知ったのだ。二人は私に隠れて、すでに結婚して子どもまで授かっていたことを。

「いい子にしてすくすく育ってね、ママが大変しないように。

言うこと聞かなかったら、生まれたあとでパパにお尻ペンペンしてもらうから！」

誠人が診察室から出てきた。手には妊婦専用の安胎薬を持っている。

顔には穏やかな笑みを浮かべ、父親になったばかりの優しい空気をまとっていた。

「まだ小さいんだから、脅かすなよ。赤ちゃんには何も分からないんだから」

その直後――

受付の電光掲示板が、私の名前を呼び出した。

人混みの隅から私は立ち上がった。

誠人は驚いたように振り返り、私と目が合った。

彼の瞳には、恐れと動揺がありありと浮かんでいた。

まさか、同じ時間、同じ病院で私に会うなんて、思ってもいなかったのだろう。

前日、私は誠人に「一緒に来てほしい」とお願いしていた。

けれど、彼は「用事がある」と言って断った。

私は、何の疑いもなくそれを信じた。

そして一人で、寂しく病院を訪れ、健診の予約をした。

だが、皮肉なことに、彼の「用事」とは、優香の健診に付き添うことだったのだ。

正真正銘の彼女である私のことなど、まるで眼中にないようだった。

私はゆっくりと歩み寄り、優香のふくらんだお腹を見つめた。

その表情はあまりにも静かで、まるで魂の抜け殻のようだった。

「……赤ちゃん、今どれくらいなの？」

誠人は唇を引き結び、視線を逸らして黙り込んだ。

代わりに、優香がどこか得意げな笑みを浮かべて答えた。

「もうすぐ二ヶ月になるの。誠人くんとの赤ちゃんなのよ」

その瞬間、私は唇を噛みしめ、奥歯がきしむほどだった。

まさか、私の中の子どもと同じ時期にできたなんて。

胸の奥が裂かれるような痛み。

こらえていた涙がついに溢れ、頬を伝って落ちた。

私は顔を上げ、誠人をまっすぐに見据えた。

唇は血の気を失い、声は喉の奥から搾り出された。

「説明、してくれるつもりはないの？」

私の涙に気づいた彼は、すぐに動揺し、苦しそうな表情を浮かべた。

駆け寄ってきて、私を強く抱きしめ、低い声で宥めるように言った。

「俺が悪かった。お前に嘘をついて、優香に付き添った。でも誤解しないで、あの子は俺のじゃない。

ただ、優香を一人で検査を受けさせるのが心配で、だから……それだけなんだ」

後ろに立っていた優香は、ふくれっ面をしたあと、すぐに泣きそうな顔になった。

その瞳には涙が溜まり、まるで儚げな桜の花びらのように誠人を見つめた。

「でも……誠人くん、赤ちゃんの父になってくれるって、言ってくれたよね？

もう私たち、籍まで入れたんだよ。

赤ちゃんが生まれたら、戸籍だってちゃんと入れなきゃいけないのに……」

I really enjoyed this series. Many books on this platform have similar stories, which gets boring really fast. This book series kept me entertained the whole time. It had the perfect balance of romance and action. I enjoyed getting to know each character in more detail as each book was added.
