Excited whispers rippled through the crowd as the Frost Fang alpha and her betas made their way forward. I couldn’t help but watch her, curiosity tugging me forward.

Elara was every inch an alpha. Tall, strong, and radiating authority, she moved with a confidence I envied. Her dark brown hair was braided like a warrior’s, and a jagged scar cut across her shoulder a mark of experience, of battles survived. She was everything I wished I could be.

Her dress was elegant, yet practical, ending well above her ankles ready for action at a moment’s notice. Alphas always were. Prepared. Dangerous. Untouchable.

In our pack, female alphas paired with male alphas, while some male alphas were forced to mate with female betas, thanks to the alpha imbalance. Wolves like me Ronan, Killian, Maris, and I had no shot at either. Maris’s haughty attitude couldn’t change that. We were all stuck at the bottom, scrambling for scraps of power we’d never taste.

As Elara reached the stage, the clouds split, revealing the full moon in all its glory. The crowd’s whispers turned into reverent murmurs.

“A blessing for the union…”

“The moon goddess watches over them.”

“Fated mates, surely.”

That was why the ceremony had to happen tonight, under the full moon. Only then could the moon goddess reveal if Darius and Elara were truly destined for each other a sign that could only appear in the moon’s silver glow.

Elara’s commanding voice boomed across the crowd, but I barely heard her. Something inside me stirred, a tug deep in my chest. A silver moonbeam landed on Darius, and the crowd gasped, whispers spreading like wildfire this had to be a blessing from the moon goddess.

Darius stared at Elara, his brow furrowing. The silver thread that should have connected him to his fated mate didn’t reach her. Instead, it angled sharply downward, stretching into the crowd. I rose onto my toes, straining to see where it led.

A ripple of shock ran through the pack. People stepped aside to follow the glowing thread. I moved too and the moment I did, the silver line shifted with me.

“Sele…” Ronan breathed, fear threading his voice. Maris shrieked in disbelief, while Killian’s jaw dropped, eyes locked on my chest. The thread ran straight into me.

This had to be a mistake. I stepped aside again, convinced it would reveal the true mate. But the thread moved with me, unwavering. I glanced behind me its end was me.

“No! That can’t be!” an older man shouted. “She can’t even shift!”

“She isn’t even a proper shifter!” another growled.

The crowd erupted in disbelief, and I felt it too my heart pounding, my mind spinning. It was impossible. Absolutely impossible. And yet, a second moonbeam descended, surrounding me in silver light. Even Ronan, Killian, and Maris stepped back, wary of the glow.

I reached toward the thread, pale as moonlight, but my fingers passed right through it.

Amid the chaos, one voice cut through everything, stopping the murmurs.

“This voids the treaty between the Frost Fang and Bloodfang packs.”

Elara’s chin lifted, her gaze sharp, her lips twisting like I was a pest she wanted crushed. Her eyes flashed gold her wolf’s anger burning as brightly as her human fury.

Kael stepped forward, placing a firm hand on Darius’s shoulder. “No! Our treaty stays intact.”

He leaned close, whispering into his son’s ear. Darius’s gaze met mine, and with a solemn nod, he accepted his father’s words.

Kael stepped back, his presence looming over the crowd. “My son will not claim that half-breed girl as his mate. She can’t even shift. He deserves someone better.”

Elara inhaled sharply, ready to argue, but Darius moved to the edge of the platform, chin raised, his gaze locking on me.

“I, Darius of the Bloodfang Pack, future alpha and son of Pack Alpha Kael, reject Selena of the Bloodfang Pack. You are an outsider, a girl without a true bond, orphan of unknown origin. You mean nothing to me. I sever our mate bond here and now, under the blessing of the full moon and the witness of the moon goddess.”

The silver thread connecting us snapped, and I felt it break inside me. Pain shot through my chest like lightning, leaving me gasping on my knees. I doubled over, silent tears streaming down my face, the agony sharper than a thousand beatings. My very soul felt ripped apart.

Just as suddenly, the pain ebbed, leaving only a hollow ache behind. I lifted my head, stunned and numb.

The moon disappeared behind clouds, taking the moonbeams with it. The silver bond was gone. I braced myself for some lingering pull, some trace of the fated mate bond but there was nothing. It was as if it had never existed.

A chill of shame and regret washed over me. I hadn’t even been allowed a moment to imagine what it would mean to have Darius as my mate, after all the years of pain and rejection.

All around me, the crowd’s eyes weighed heavy on me. For a fleeting instant, the moon had chosen me. I had almost been seen, almost elevated, almost destined to become the future alpha’s mate. And now… I had nothing.

The first thing I saw was the way the moonlight fell on him sliding through the trees and settling in his dark hair, making it shine. For a moment, everything else disappeared. I stopped breathingMy mate. The one I left behind. Guilt hit me hard, tight in my chest.“Cassius ” My voice came out low and unsure. “I’m sorry for everything I said.”He didn’t react the way I expected. No anger. No cold look.Just calm. Too calm.“Selena,” he said softly, “you don’t need to apologize.” A small smile touched his lips. “If anything I’m proud of you.”I frowned. “Proud? Why?”“For standing strong. For trying to protect the Moonblood pack when you didn’t have to.” His voice was steady. “Most people would have run.”Before I could speak, he leaned closer and kissed my cheek slowly. My heart skipped.“For trying to protect three stubborn alphas,” he went on, his voice deeper now. “You acted like you already belonged with us.”His lips moved closer to my ear, his warm breath sending a rush of heat thro

Fast.As fast as I could. After some time, large rocks blocked my way. I had to move around them. That’s when I heard it again Low growling.I stopped instantly. Two wolves stood ahead.Big ones. Not regular wolves.Alpha wolves. One had a reddish-brown coat. The other was gray mixed with brown. They were facing each other at first like they were already fighting. Then they noticed me.Both turned at once.Their noses moved as they picked up my scent.Fear spread through my body.Slowly, I pulled out my knife. The same one I used before. But I knew the truth It wouldn’t be enough. And I couldn’t fight both of them. One of the wolves gave a small laugh, like my knife was nothing. The other growled at him. They were rogues.Unpredictable.Dangerous.And now, they both wanted me.I stood still.Running would only make things worse. Then A sound came from behind me.Growling.I turned quickly.Relief hit me.Cassius.And the others.Lucien gave a sharp bark. That was enough.Cassius and

He always protected me.Even when I didn’t ask.Even when it put him against other wolves, even his own people.Something warm grew inside me. My wolf responded to him, proud of his strength. But there was something deeper too, something possessive. That other female wolf had noticed it too.Cassius wasn’t just someone who protected me.He belonged to me.That thought hit me hard.Mine? Then a harsh truth came to me if my heat was rising because I had finally found my fated mate then Darius was never the one. And if the Howling Evergreen pack noticed it the moment Cassius brought me here Then everything I believed was wrong. My voice shook as I spoke.“He’s my mate.”Shante laughed softly. “If my mate was killing like that for me, I wouldn’t complain. That’s actually hot.”But I wasn’t smiling.Because everything inside me was changing. My whole life felt like it was being rewritten.I wasn’t rejected.I had just been waiting for him.“Cassius ” I called quietly. He was still cleanin

Safe. Then her eyes changed. They became sharp as she stared straight at me, and the air in the room felt heavy.“Selena,” she said slowly, “you are under two curses.”My heart dropped. “What?”“Two curses,” she repeated. “One from long ago and one more recent.”I froze.“Cursed by who?” I asked quietly.“Someone from our own kind,” she said, her voice turning serious. “A witch or a mage who betrayed you.”I held the mug tighter. “What is the first curse?”Her eyes stayed on me. “It was placed to block your magic.”Before I could react, she added, “And the second curse is even more dangerous.”I leaned forward, scared.“It’s a fake fated mate bond.”Everything went silent.“What ?” I whispered. “Why would someone do that?”Ellie stayed calm and let me process it.Then I spoke again, my voice shaking. “If it’s fake, why is Bloodfang still after me? Why does everyone believe it? Even after Darius rejected me?”“I don’t know why they believe it,” she said. “But the magic is strong enough

Not at all. After a brief silence, Shante spoke again, her voice low.“She can’t stay here.”I nodded once. “She can’t shift and her heat is almost here. We need to get her out.”Shante crossed her arms. “So what’s the plan?”I already had one.Several, actually.Lucien, Luca, and I had talked through every possibility while we followed them here.None of them felt right.Except one.Bloodfang would not get to her.Not if I could help it.And if I had to I would take her with me.Whether she agreed or not.Even if she fought.Even if she hated me for it.But before I could answer A loud crash echoed from inside the cabin. Then came shouting.A voice. Not hers.Shante went still. So did I.Because in that instant, one thing became clear Selena was no longer alone.I had gone past a line I never thought I would cross. At that moment, thinking didn’t matter anymore only her did. My wolf didn’t ask questions. It had only one order: protect Selena, no matter what it took.I looked at Sh

My heart dropped. So that was it.He didn’t shift for me.He just needed to make a call.He raised the phone to his ear, and I heard a deep voice on the other end.“Are you safe?”Cassius replied quickly, “Safe enough. Shante is with us. We’re leaving false trails in the wildlands.”There was a short pause.“We’ll keep them busy for as long as we can.”My chest tightened. Was he talking about protecting me?Cassius suddenly looked at me, and I realized I had made a sound.I froze. Then he spoke again, his voice firm, “No. Tell them we ran. Don’t get involved.”He ended the call before anyone could respond.“Don’t do anything reckless,” he said softly, almost like he was asking me.Shante stepped in. “Idori will handle Kylie. Trust her.”“I hope so,” I said quietly. “No one should get hurt because of me.”Shante didn’t say anything more.“We’re close,” she added.Cassius looked ahead. “We shouldn’t sneak up on her. We should make noise first.”Shante smirked and lifted her phone. “I al
