Lucia slowly opened her eyes.

She was lying on a bed, facing a white ceiling. All she could smell was the sharp scent of disinfectants.

She tried to sit up, and a voice said, “Take it easy, Miss Harrington.”

“Miss Harrington?” Lucia frowned and she turned.

A man wearing a perfectly tailored suit, sat in the leather chair next to her. He had a briefcase on the floor beside him, and his hands were crossed over his legs in a professional manner.

“Who are you?” Lucia asked promptly.

Her voice sounded rough. How long had she been unconscious, she wondered.

“My name is Tony Langford,” said the man. He leaned forward and handed her a glass of water, along with a white business card. “I’m the head lawyer for the Harrington family.”

She took a sip of water, then looked at him again. “Your voice sounds familiar.”

“Yes, I was the one who made the anonymous call last night,” the lawyer said with a faint smile.

Lucia’s eyes widened. “You…you’re the one who warned me about the documents?”

Langford nodded. “Yes. I’m sorry I had to do it that way, but time was running out.”

Lucia pushed herself up, confusion and anger mixing together. “What is going on? Where am I?”

The sharp pain that had tormented her for weeks was almost gone. Only a dull ache remained.

“You're in one of the best private hospitals in the city. Don't worry, you're in safe hands,” Langford said, leaned forward. “Now, I have something important to tell you, Miss Harrington...”

“I’m not…That’s not my name.”

He smiled kindly. “What I’m about to tell you will be difficult to believe. You are not Lucia Hale. Your real name is Elara, and you are the sole heir to the Harrington family fortune.”

Lucia stared at him for several seconds, then let out a bitter laugh. “What the fuck? What kind of a joke is this?”

“It’s not.” Langford’s face was as serious as stone.

Lucia dropped the glass of water angrily. ”You have no idea what I’ve been through. And you still have the guts to come here and toy with me, telling me that I’m some secret heiress to one of the wealthiest names in the city?”

“I know your spouse is cheating on you with your best friend and they plan to take over your brand after your death. I know they have a child together. I also know you were diagnosed with cancer a few weeks ago, and you were told that you have months left to live.”

Lucia opened her mouth and closed it again. How did he know all that? Just who was this man?

“Like I said, I am the head lawyer of the Harrington family,” Langford said, as if he had heard her thoughts. “And you are the only one who can inherit their fortune.”

He took up the briefcase and opened it. From within, he took out a folder and handed it to her.

She went through it carefully, uncovering several documents. A birth certificate with her picture on it, a DNA result, some pictures of herself as a child being carried by a beautiful couple, a testament signed by Will Harrington that named her as the heir to his title and wealth.

“But I don’t understand,” she said. “I-I grew up in an orphanage.”

“You were given up for adoption when you were very young,” Langford said. “Your biological parents made that painful decision to protect you from certain dangers at the time. It took us a while to find you, but we did, anyway. And just in time, too.”

Lucia looked at the documents. It all looked real: from the pictures of her as a child, to the DNA test that confirmed her as Elara Harrington.

“I had them run the DNA test as soon as we found you in the car crash,” Langford explained.

“You should have just let me die,” she sighed. “Just end it all…”

“No, Miss Harrington. You do not have cancer like you were told. You were slowly being poisoned with a metal toxin, exhibiting symptoms similar to late-stage cancer. But it was still in the early stages. We’ve already started the proper treatment while you were unconscious. You will make a full recovery.”

That was why the pain was reduced, she thought.

Lucia clutched the bedsheets.

“I was….poisoned?” She repeated.

“I believe your husband and friend wanted you dead, so they could take over Hale Fashion. Fortunately, we found you before then.”

The cancer was fake. Logan's infertility was fake. Their marriage was fake.

The past five years of her life had been a big, cruel lie, right under her nose.

She had sacrificed her future, her scholarship, her health, her entire life for a man who never loved her. For a best friend who had stabbed her in the back.

Poisoned and played like a fool.

For a long moment, Lucia said nothing, silent tears rolling down her cheeks.

“Are you alright, Miss Harrington,” Langford asked quietly.

Something had shifted inside her. Something cold and deadly.

“I want them to pay,” she whispered, her hands clenched into fists. “I want to destroy them myself. Slowly.”

The lawyer smiled. “As you wish, Miss Harrington. You now have the full resources of the family at your disposal.”

“Good.”

She stared at the documents again, at her birth certificate and her inheritance claim. Her earliest memories had been of the orphanage, but she could not deny that something had been missing before then. She had felt it for the longest time, even before she met that devil, that bastard, Logan Hale.

“When do we leave?” She asked.

“Whenever you wish,” he replied, “Although, there is one more thing I would like to reveal to you.”

Lucia cocked her head. “What is it?”

Just as he was about to reply, the door swung open.

A man walked in, carrying a bouquet of flowers. He was tall and broad, like an athlete, with sharp features and an aura that seemed to fill the room.

His cold blue eyes rested on her suddenly, and she felt her breath catch in her throat.

Langford got to his feet and said, “Miss Harrington, allow me to introduce Lord Atlas Thorne.”

“I told you. Don’t mix business with pleasure,” Atlas said. “Especially a business as messed up as yours.” “It’s not my fault,” Elara fired back. “I didn’t know things were that bad.” “No one can blame you. The whole place was left in sloppy hands. But then, as your husband…by contract…I am obligated to save you.”She regarded him for a few seconds. There was a clearly a lot of brains beneath all that arrogant playboy exterior. And he had shown just a bit of it moments ago. If anything, it made her more curious. “Good thing you are here, then,” she said. “So, we can get to work.” Atlas pushed the pizza box toward her in reply. She opened her mouth to object, but he shook his head slightly: he won’t talk till she had eaten. “Ugh.” She took a slice and a bite, then felt her brows lift in perfect surprise for the second time that afternoon. “Mmm, this is good.” He nodded, like she had just pointed out that the sky was blue. “Of course it is. This is my establishment after all.” S

Elara scrunched up her nose.“I’ll stick with the ice cream, thanks,” she said. “Your loss.” She took another spoon, savouring the soft taste in her mouth. He did know what he was talking about, but she wasn’t going to admit that and risk inflating his huge ego any further. “Look at this,” he said, looking at her from across the table. “Our first date.” Elara looked up quickly. “What? No. it’s not.” “It could be, if you want, you know. I could get Michelle…” he pointed at the waitress, “…to put on some romantic music and we could have a-”“Do you just enjoy teasing me or are you trying to escape from something?” Something flickered across Atlas’ eyes briefly, but he just took another spoon of chocolate.“Look, I appreciate this and all, but I want to get back to work as soon as I can,” she said. “Why, what’s the rush?” He cocked his head slightly, and his long hair fell slightly to the side with the motion. She dragged her eyes away from how oily they looked. “If I’m being ho

Elara shifted her gaze from her aunt to Atlas. He looked too relaxed and her smile looked fake. Just what had they been talking about before she came in? “Amelia was just here to say hi,” Atlas said suddenly. “She’s leaving already.”Amelia shot him a cold glare, her lips pressed into a thin line, but she turned to Elara. “Yes, I’ll leave you two to it.”Then she withdrew from the study and she shut the door behind her with a loud bang that echoed down the hallway.Elara crossed her arms, turning back to Atlas. “What was that about?”He shrugged, already turning his attention back to the scattered papers. “Nothing you need to worry yourself about.”She narrowed her eyes in suspicion, but he didn’t say anything more. Instead, he began arranging the documents into separate piles with surprising efficiency. “What do you think?” she asked, watching him.“I think this is all disorderly,” he replied. “You have to start from somewhere.”She scrunched up her nose, but held back her retort

“You want to move in with me…here?” Elara asked with slightly widened eyes. Atlas folded his arms. “I don't see what's the big deal, I spent the night here before, haven't I?”“The big deal is that it's not one night anymore. I have no idea how many days-”“You need my help, Elara. This world you've stepped into? It's not what most people think.” He stepped closer, filling the space between them with that soft, clean scent that filled her thoughts. “You came into sudden wealth, out of nowhere. It doesn't help that you're a lady, no offense.” She opened her mouth to argue, but he touched her hair, and she felt her voice go silent. “You heard my grandma,” he went on softly. “They're not going to kneel and pledge allegiance. You don't know who to trust, and I've been in this game way longer than you have.” She pursed her lips, forcing herself to hold his gaze without thinking of his touch on her hair or how blue his eyes were up close or how lovely he smelled…“I guess I don't have

Elara joined her aunt for breakfast out on the patio the next morning. She liked the view that the yard gave her. It faced the lawn: it was well-kept and so were the flowers and hedges that lined the land, but she suddenly didn’t find it that impressive. Not like the Steeles’. “Did you sleep well?” her aunt’s voice interrupted her thoughts. “I did,” Elara replied. “Good.” She took a bite of mango slices and casually asked, “So, what else did you talk about with Victoria?” Elara paused, with a fork of her own sliced mangoes halfway to her mouth. “Why is that important?” she asked. “Well, I did some thinking, and the Steeles might not actually be all that I thought them to be,” Amelia said.“Really?” She hooked a brow. “But you were very happy when she invited me yesterday.” Amelia shrugged, shifting her eyes to her plate. “I didn’t think much about it then.” Elara was about to ask why the Steeles wouldn’t be on their side and why they would be helping her, when the sliding gla

CHAPTER TWENTY-TWOThe yard beyond the glass screen in the dining room was a wide expanse of green land that stretched before a small artificial lake, dotted here and there with trees. That was where Elara found Victoria after dessert. She thanked her for her hospitality and for dinner. Now, she was ready to take her leave. “Are you certain you wouldn’t prefer to stay the night? We have more than enough rooms for you and for your driver.” Elara smiled politely. “Really, it’s fine.”“Very well. Come to me if you need anything, dear. I owed your parents a great deal in their lifetime.” She paused,a frown appearing on her face. “Where is my grandson?” “He…had urgent business to attend to.”Something flashed in the older woman’s eyes, but it was gone as soon as it appeared. She sighed instead and said, “I apologize for his sake. My grandson might bear the titles of his family, but plays the part of an unmannered child.”“It’s no problem, really-”“It should be.” Victoria gave her a si
