Chapter 1

The Contract That Changed Everything

The rain in Berlin always felt heavier at night.

Not just water falling from the sky—but something colder. Something that made people hurry home, avoid eye contact, and forget that life could change in a single moment.

Lena Vogel stood outside the glass tower on Friedrichstraße, her coat too thin for the weather, her hands wrapped tightly around a folder she had read ten times already.

Inside that folder was a contract.

A contract worth more than anything she had ever seen in her life.

A contract that should never have been offered to someone like her.

“Don’t overthink it,” her friend had said earlier on the phone. “Just go, listen, and leave.”

But Lena wasn’t the type who could “just listen and leave.”

The doors of the building slid open without her touching them.

Warm air hit her face. Silence followed. Not the normal kind of silence—but the expensive kind. The kind that lives in places where every second is paid for.

A receptionist looked up. One glance at Lena’s wet shoes, her simple coat, and her tired eyes—and then politely smiled, as if nothing about her existence was unusual.

“Ms. Vogel. They are expecting you.”

No hesitation. No questions.

She was guided through a hallway of black marble and soft gold light until she reached a private elevator. It moved upward without a sound, as if the building itself was careful not to disturb its owner.

Top floor.

The doors opened.

And that was when she saw him.

He stood with his back to her, looking out over the city like he owned the entire skyline. Maybe he did.

“Dr. Lena Vogel,” he said without turning.

His voice was calm. Controlled. The kind of voice that didn’t ask—it decided.

“You’re later than I expected.”

She stepped forward slowly. “Traffic.”

A pause.

Then he turned.

Adrian Kessler.

Everyone knew the name. Few had ever seen the man behind it.

Young. Sharp suit. Eyes that didn’t reveal anything useful. The kind of billionaire who didn’t appear in magazines often because he didn’t need attention—attention followed him.

He studied her like she was a problem he had already solved.

Or a risk he was willing to take anyway.

“You read the contract?” he asked.

“Yes,” she replied.

“And?”

Lena hesitated.

Because the contract wasn’t normal.

It wasn’t a job offer.

It wasn’t a business deal.

It was something else entirely.

“I think,” she said carefully, “you’re asking me to become something I’m not qualified to be.”

For the first time, something flickered in his expression. Not a smile.

Interest.

“Good,” he said quietly. “That means you understood it correctly.”

He walked toward the table between them and placed a second folder down.

Thicker.

Heavier.

Dangerous, somehow.

“This is not about qualification,” Adrian said. “It’s about necessity.”

Lena didn’t touch the folder.

“What exactly do you need from me?”

The room went still.

Outside, Berlin kept moving. Cars. Lights. People living normal lives.

Inside that office, something irreversible was about to begin.

Adrian looked at her directly now.

“I need you,” he said, “to be my wife.”

And just like that…

the billionaire secret stopped being a mystery.

And became a trap.
