CHAPTER FIFTEEN

I forced myself to breathe.

What the hell was I doing?

I was standing too close to him, staring at him too long, letting his voice and touch get into my head like some naive girl with a crush.

The realization hit hard enough to pull me back to reality.

Leonardo Blackwood was dangerous in every possible way, and the worst part was that I kept forgetting it whenever he looked at me for too long.

I forced myself to step back before I did something stupid—like lean into his touch again.

  • The Billionaire's Little Thief   CHAPTER SEVENTY ONE

The moment I closed my bedroom door behind me, I leaned against it and let out a slow, weary breath.First Natalia, now Grandma Blackwood.I rubbed my temples wearily. “Just stay out of Grandma's way,” I muttered to myself. “If she doesn't want to acknowledge your existence, don't give her a reason to notice you.”That sounded like the safest plan. The next few days passed in a blur of birthday preparations. Natalia continued wearing her perfect little mask. She smiled at everyone, complimented the maids and followed Grandma Blackwood around like the sweetest girl imaginable, listening attentively to every suggestion and anticipating every need. She even thanked the staff whenever they brought her something. It was enough to make everyone wonder if she'd undergone some kind of miraculous personality change. Everyone seemed convinced… except me. I wasn't fooled, every smile felt carefully rehearsed, every act of kindness looked calculated and whenever her eyes landed on me, there was

Dinner ended far more peacefully than I expected. Natalia cleared the table with a smile that looked almost genuine, humming softly as she instructed the maids to pack away the leftovers. It was... unsettling.“I’ll see everyone tomorrow,” she chirped brightly before disappearing upstairs. The silence she left behind felt oddly heavy.Damien leaned back in his chair and let out a long breath. “I don't trust that woman.”“I don't think anyone does,” Adrian replied.Leonardo didn't say a word. His gaze lingered on the staircase long after Natalia had disappeared.I stood from my chair. “I’m going to get some fresh air.”Leonardo rose immediately. “I’ll come with you.”Damien looked between us before waving us away dramatically. “Go. Maybe the fresh air will help you understand whatever spell Natalia is trying to cast.”I couldn't help smiling. “If she starts levitating tomorrow, I’m moving out.”Damien laughed. “I’ll help you pack.”The night air wrapped around us the moment we stepped

Natalia crossed the living room with surprising enthusiasm. “Leonardo! I missed you.”Before anyone could react, she threw her arms around him. Leonardo didn't return the embrace. He stood perfectly still, his hands hanging loosely at his sides, his face completely unreadable until Natalia finally let go. Without seeming offended, she turned to Damien and Adrian. “It's good to see you two again.”She greeted them warmly before her gaze landed on me. “Riley!”Before I could react, she wrapped me in a hug too. I stood there without returning it.When she finally stepped back, she giggled happily as though we were the closest of friends. “You've gotten even prettier.”I forced a small smile. Something wasn't right. Natalia wasn't this friendly. Whatever she was planning, I was certain it wasn't anything good. Everyone exchanged confused glances. The same thought was clearly running through our heads, but no one said a word.“I'm starving,” Natalia announced cheerfully. “I need to get s

Damien's expression darkened. “How many?"“More than thirty.” The guard replied between heavy breaths.Adrian's hand instinctively went to the gun beneath his jacket. “He came prepared.”I looked at Leonardo, confusion knotting in my chest. “How did he know we were here so quickly?”His jaw clenched. “This only proves one thing…” His voice turned dangerously calm. “His informant is closer to us than I thought.”Damien drew his weapon. "We have to move, we didn't bring any men, if we stay here, they'll surround us.”Leonardo turned to me. “Riley.” He placed the tiny silver key into my hand. “Put it back in the necklace.”I slid the key inside the hidden compartment, before fastening the necklace around my neck once again.Leonardo cast a final glance around the vault. “Lock it.”The enormous steel door groaned shut. The locking mechanism echoed through the underground chamber and sealed itself once more.Leonardo pulled out his gun and looked at us. “Let's go.”Together we rushed towar

Leonardo wasted no time. He called Adrian and Damien into the study. One look at the tiny silver key resting in Leonardo's palm was enough for them to understand. Adrian's eyes widened for a second before he recovered. Damien stepped forward, staring at the key as though he couldn't quite believe it existed.“So...” Damien said quietly, “after all these years we finally found it.”“Get the cars ready, we’re leaving for the vault.”Within minutes, the four of us were on our way. I sat beside Leonardo in the back seat while Adrian drove and Damien occupied the passenger seat. The drive was quieter than I expected. No one spoke much.Nearly forty minutes later, the car slowed before a towering steel gate hidden deep inside one of the Blackwood family's private estates.Unlike the mansion, this place looked more like a military compound than a residence with high concrete walls surrounding the property. Security cameras covered every angle and armed guards stood watch from elevated tower

I reached Leonardo's study and lifted my hand to knock. Before my knuckles touched the door, Damien's voice drifted through the narrow gap left by the half-closed door.“You're really going to keep avoiding her?”I froze. After a long silence, Leonardo answered “...Yes.” His voice was calm, stripped of its usual warmth. “It's what's best for her.”My brows knitted together. Avoiding me?Damien let out a frustrated sigh. “No… it's what's easiest for you.”“I've made my decision.”“You can't keep making decisions for Riley.” Damien's tone grew firmer. “She deserves to know the truth.”“I know.”“Then tell her.”“I can't.” Frustration slipped into Leonardo's voice, surprising me. Damien refused to back down. “You're pushing away the one person who wants to stand beside you.”Leonardo let out a quiet, bitter laugh. “And after she knows everything…” He said softly “...she won't.”“That's not your decision to make.” Damien's voice softened. “Tell her the truth... then let her decide.”My

I turned and walked back to my desk without looking at anyone. Still, I could feel the subtle shift in the room. The quiet attention. I sat down, pulled my laptop closer, and stared at the blank screen. I had to write a proposal for a major contract, from start to finish.I exhaled slowly and ope

The hallway was dim when I stepped out of Sofia’s room.Quiet in a way that made every thought louder.I closed the door behind me and turned, already halfway to my room when a voice stopped me.“Couldn’t sleep?”I looked up and Damien stood a few steps away, leaning casually against the wall, like

The knock came again. I stood in the middle of the room, breath uneven and my palms damp, I stared at the door contemplating whether to open the door or not. I reached for the door knob, my fingers trembling, I twisted the door knob and the door swung open. Leonardo stood there, his expression u
