But as they play the role of a married couple in front of the media and his ambitious family, their fake marriage starts to feel more real than either of them expected. Scarlett agreed to the marriage to save her brother. But when the contract ends, will Lucien really let her walk away?

CHAPTER 1

SCARLETT HAYES POV

“We need the downpayment for the surgery by tomorrow morning, Ms. Hayes. Otherwise, we’ll have to postpone the procedure.”

The billing clerk's voice was flat, as though she'd delivered the same heartbreaking news hundreds of times before.

“Postpone?” My voice cracked, raw and barely audible. “He’s seven. If you postpone it—”

“Those are the hospital rules, Ms. Hayes. I'm sorry.”

The line went dead. I stared at my cracked phone screen, the heavy, suffocating silence of the hospital corridor pressing down on me. The scent of antiseptic and bleach always made my throat tight, but tonight, it felt like it was outright choking me.

I leaned my forehead against the cold glass of the ICU viewing window. On the other side, my seven-year-old brother, Toby, looked impossibly small beneath the tangle of wires. Every steady beep of the heart monitor reminded me that I was running out of time.

Where am I going to get fifty five thousand dollars in less than twenty-four hours? I had maxed out every credit card, begged every distant relative who suddenly stopped answering my calls, and sold everything of value our parents had left us before they died.

I had nothing left to sell. Except my own labor.

That was how I found myself standing in front of the towering iron gates of the Reed estate just an hour later.

The Reed estate looked less like a home and more like a private fortress hidden in the city's most exclusive hills. The wealthy family who owned it—the Reeds—were notoriously private, almost mythologically rich. They were looking for a stay-in housemaid immediately, promising a salary that was triple the market rate, with emergency advance options for the right candidate.

I took a deep breath, smoothing down my faded jeans and the only decent shirt I owned. Just get through the interview, Scarlett. Do it for Toby.

The heavy iron gates buzzed open after I spoke into the intercom. I walked up the winding, cobblestone driveway, my chest tight with anxiety. The sheer scale of the place was overwhelming. Manicured gardens, fountains that whispered of old money, and towering glass walls showed glimpses of minimalist luxury inside.

A butler in a crisp suit met me at the grand double doors. He didn't say much, just gave me a brief, assessing look before leading me through a maze of polished marble hallways toward the staff quarters.

"Wait here," the butler said, pointing to a small waiting area near the rear courtyard. "The head housekeeper will be with you shortly."

I nodded, clutching my worn canvas bag to my chest.

"Well, well. Look what the cat dragged in."

The voice was instantly familiar, like a physical blow to my ribs. My stomach dropped, a cold wave of dread washing over me. I turned around slowly.

Standing by the glass doors leading to the garage was a man in a tailored driver’s uniform. His hair was perfectly styled, his posture oozing a familiar, irritating confidence.

It was Ethan.

My ex-boyfriend. The same man who promised he'd stand beside me after our parents died. Two weeks later, he disappeared the moment he realized our fortune was gone, leaving me alone with crushing debt and a little brother fighting for his life.

"Ethan?" my voice came out barely above a whisper.

He smirked, taking a slow step toward me, hands slid casually into his pockets. "In the flesh. I heard the Reeds were hiring a new maid, but I never expected it to be you, Scarlett. What happened to the proud, untouchable heiress?"

Of all the places in this massive city, why here? Why now? My hands balled into fists, my nails biting into my palms. The humiliation was hot and bitter, rising up my throat. He looked so comfortable here, so untouched by the wreckage he had left behind in my life.

"I'm just here for a job, Ethan," I said, keeping my voice as flat and emotionless as possible. "I don't want any trouble."

"A job? As a maid?" He let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "Man, how the mighty have fallen. From living in a penthouse to scrubbing toilets. You really are desperate, aren't you?"

Before I could reply, the click of high heels echoed on the marble floor. A woman dressed in a sharp, dark gray uniform walked in. She was attractive in a severe, cold way, her eyes immediately locking onto me with clear distaste.

"Ethan, babe, who is this?" she asked, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness as she slid her arm through his.

"Selena," Ethan said, his smirk widening as he looked at me. "This is Scarlett. My ex. You know, the one I told you about? The one who thought she was too good for everyone until her family went bankrupt."

Selena’s eyebrows arched, a cruel, satisfied smile spreading across her lips. "Ah. The charity case. So, you're the one applying for the emergency maid position?" She walked around me, inspecting me like a piece of cheap, damaged goods. "We don't need dead weight here, Scarlett. Especially not someone with... baggage."

"I can work," I said, forcing my voice to remain steady despite the roar of anger and shame in my ears. "I'll do whatever chores you give me. I just need the job."

"Oh, we'll see about that," Selena purred, leaning closer. "But let's get one thing straight. I am the head housekeeper. Around here, you are at the very bottom of the food chain. If you want this job, you're going to have to earn it. On your knees."

Ethan laughed softly, watching me with a smug, triumphant expression. He loved this. He loved seeing me reduced to nothing, proving to himself that he was right to abandon me when things got hard.

I swallowed my pride, forcing the lump in my throat down into the dark, hollow space in my chest. Toby needs his medicine. Toby needs the surgery. Nothing else mattered. Not Ethan, not Selena, not my dignity.

"I understand," I whispered.

Selena smirked, tossing a heavy ring of keys onto the floor at my feet. The metal clattered loudly against the polished marble, sliding right to the tips of my worn-out shoes.

"Pick those up, go to the utility closet, and start with the west wing corridor," Selena commanded coldly. "And don't let me catch you slacking, or you're out on the street before the sun goes down."

I stared down at the keys resting against the dirty rubber soles of my shoes. After a long, tense second of silence, I slowly knelt on the cold marble floor, reached out, and wrapped my fingers tightly around the heavy metal ring.
