NARA

The clock on the wall read eleven forty-three.. I had been staring at it for over two hours now.

I shifted on the sofa again, tucking my legs deeper under me and pulling the throw blanket tighter around my shoulders. The television played some old show in the background, but I was not paying any attention to it.. It was just there to just fill the heavy silence.

Cassie’s words would not leave me alone despite how much I tried..

“I hope you survive this marriage.”

She had said it so calmly,

JAREDMy heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped animal. For a second, the room seemed to lose its color, the walls closing in on me. It’s not here. It’s not here. How could I have forgotten something so important? Jesus Christ! The words repeated in my mind, a terrifying chant. I had spent my entire life building a reputation for being flawless, calculating, and completely in control. Yet right now, looking into the empty depths of my briefcase, I felt utterly naked."Mr. Wilson?"My personal assistant’s voice broke through the fog in my brain. She stepped fully into the office, gesturing toward the four international investors. “Our esteemed visitors are here.” She announced again. They were sharply dressed, their faces carrying the expectant smiles of men ready to witness something extraordinary."Ah, gentlemen," I said. It took every ounce of my willpower to force my hands to stop shaking, to snap the briefcase shut, and to plaster a welcoming smile on my face. My voice

NARA DAYS LATER I ambled into Jared’s parents mansion on the main side of the family’s estate for breakfast. Ever since I and Jared’s fall out in his car , we barely saw eye to eye. We were both strangers living in the same home. Anytime I felt like things between us were getting smoothened out, something just happens that throws me back to the starting line. I was still deeply hurt by his harsh words, and he remained wrapped in his cold, unyielding pride. I didn’t even want to be here but I just had to. Because in this family, appearances matter more than anything else. Even if you were suffocating, you were expected to do what was necessary. Which was why I couldn’t refuse the invitation to join the family’s breakfast with Jared. I would have rather much preferred to eat in the solitude of my home. As we walked in, I sighted his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson. They sat at the head of the long mahogany table. Cassie was there too, looking bored as she scrolled through her

NARA The restaurant was just the kind of place that really didn’t need to try. No flashy signs, no crowded entrance, just a quiet elegance that announced itself in the way the lighting fell soft and golden over everything, the way the staff moved like they had been trained never to rush, the way the air itself smelled faintly expensive. Every table was set like something out of a magazine. Every person seated at those tables looked like they had been born knowing which fork to use first. I walked in beside Jared and tried not to look like I was looking at everything. He had his hand at the small of my back guiding me through, and one of the restaurant staff appeared almost instantly, leading us toward a section in the back that was half partitioned off from the rest of the room. Reserved. Private. The kind of spot you didn’t get unless someone already knew your name before you arrived. Three people were already at the table when we got there. Two men and a woman, all dressed with

32NARAThe kitchen was warm and the garlic had been going long enough that the whole room smelled like something actually worth coming home to.I stood at the stove stirring slowly, keeping my eyes on the pot, keeping my voice easy and light.“So how long have you both been working here?” I asked. “In this house.”The younger maid looked up from the vegetables she was chopping and smiled. “Three years for me ma.”“Almost five for me,” the older one said from across the counter where she was arranging the side dishes.“Almost five.” I nodded like I was just making conversation, just filling the silence. “So you were both here before I came. When it was different.”“Yes ma,” the younger one said.I stirred again to let a few seconds pass.“What was it like?” I asked. “Before.”The younger one’s knife slowed down barely.. Just enough that I noticed. The older one kept moving the dishes around the counter with the dedicated focus of someone who had suddenly found the task extremely impor

BETHANYI couldn’t stop thinking about what Ophelia told me.I sat on my sofa with my legs pulled under me and just replayed the whole thing. The tea, the sitting room, the way she had leaned forward like she was letting me in on something everybody else was too blind to see. That marriage is hollow.I said it out loud just to hear how it felt.“That marriage is hollow.” and It felt good. Those pictures had genuinely scared me. I’m not going to pretend they didn’t. Jared and Nara walking into that gala hand in hand, his body turned toward her, every blog in the city running with it like they had just discovered the most beautiful love story of the year. I had sat in my living room and felt something cold move through me that I hadn’t felt in a long time. But Ophelia words was all i needed now.. She knew Jared, she knew what was performance and what was real and she had sat across from me and told me plainly that what the world was seeing was not what was actually happening behind clos

The car rolled to a stop and the chauffeur came around to open the door.Nara stepped out first, one hand gathering the hem of her dress, as the night air hit her face while she just stood there for a second and breathed.“God, I’m tired… Who knew smiling could hurt this much?” Nara cursed under her breath. The gala had looked beautiful with its fine attention to fancy details, candlelights a d women wearing dresses that probably cost more than most people’s yearly rent. But none of that mattered once you were standing in the middle of it.It was just a draining circle of smiling, shaking hands, saying the right things and more smiling. Her feet still ached from the heels, and her cheeks felt sore from holding the same polite expression all night.Jared came around the car and they walked inside together, neither of them speaking. The house was quiet with the staff already settled for the night, just the sound of their footsteps through the corridor and up the stairs. In the room Nar
