Chapter 1: The Penthouse Call

The marble foyer of the Grand Horizon tower was cold enough to make Maya shiver, but her hands were clammy with sweat.

Five years. It had been five long years since she had stepped foot in the upper district of the city. Five years since her life blew up in a single night of false accusations, stolen money, and an abrupt midnight escape.

She smoothed down the front of her simple navy nursing scrubs, checking her phone screen.

Agency Alert: Urgent assignment. Private pediatric/adult nursing care. Penthouse 80B, Vance Tower. High discretion required.

Maya took a deep breath. She couldn't afford to be picky or nervous. Her daughter, Lily, needed her heart medication by the end of the week, and private nursing shifts in the high-rent district paid three times the normal clinic rate.

Just do the job, get the payout, and go home to Lily, she reminded herself.

The elevator hummed smoothly as it sped up to the 80th floor. When the doors slid open, Maya stepped directly into a massive, minimalist glass-and-steel penthouse overlooking the city skyline.

"Miss Lin?" a middle-aged woman in a crisp housekeeper's uniform asked, hurrying down the hallway.

"Yes, Maya Lin from St. Jude Private Nursing," Maya said, offering a warm, professional smile. "I received the rush dispatch."

"Thank goodness. The master has been having severe stress-induced migraines, but he refuses to slow down or take his medication," the woman sighed, leading Maya down a sleek, dimly lit hallway toward double oak doors. "He’s in his study. Just get his vitals and make sure he drinks the prescribed sedative tea."

"Understood."

Maya knocked twice. When no answer came, she softly turned the brass handle and pushed the door open. "Excuse me, sir, I'm the nurse from—"

The words froze in her throat.

Standing by the floor-to-ceiling window, a crystal glass of whiskey in one hand, was a man in a tailored charcoal suit. Broad shoulders, sharp jawline, and jet-black hair pushed back effortlessly.

As he turned slowly toward the door, Maya's heart slammed against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Julian Vance.

The ruthless heir to the Vance Financial Empire. The man she had loved with every fiber of her soul five years ago. The man whose bed she had fled in the middle of the night without a single word of explanation.

Julian’s eyes locked onto hers. For a fraction of a second, shock flashed across his striking, icy-violet eyes—a rare genetic trait that made his gaze unforgettable. But almost instantly, the surprise melted into a wall of pure, terrifying frost.

"You," Julian rasped, his voice deep, gravelly, and laced with absolute venom.

Maya instinctively took a step back, her back hitting the wooden door frame. He looked different—harder, leaner, with subtle lines around his eyes that hadn't been there when they were naive college lovers. He radiated raw, intimidating power now.

Julian set his glass down on the mahogany desk with a sharp clack and strode toward her. His long strides closed the distance in seconds, pinning her against the door frame before she could even think to run.

The heat coming off his body was overwhelming, carrying the familiar scent of cedarwood and dark tobacco that used to make her feel safe. Now, it felt like an iron cage.

"Five years, Maya," Julian lowered his head, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper near her ear. "You steal into my life, disappear like a ghost when things go wrong, and now you walk into my home wearing a nurse's uniform?"

"Julian... I—I didn't know this was your penthouse," Maya stammered, trying to keep her voice professional despite her racing pulse. "The agency just gave me an address. I can leave—"

"You're not going anywhere," he growled, resting one hand flat against the door beside her head, trapping her. "You think you can just vanish whenever it suits you?"

Before Maya could respond, the sound of heels clicking against marble echoed down the hallway outside.

"Julian, darling?" a high-pitched, sweet voice called out. "The wedding planner sent over the sample floral arrangements for our gala!"

Maya's blood ran cold. She knew that voice.

Victoria Sterling. The heiress who had framed Maya five years ago, making Julian believe Maya had leaked his family's corporate secrets for money.

Julian didn't break eye contact with Maya, but his jaw tightened. "In the study, Victoria," he called back calmly, his eyes remaining locked on Maya's pale face.

Maya felt sick. He's engaged to Victoria?

Suddenly, the cheap phone in Maya's scrub pocket began to vibrate loudly with a ringtone that sounded like a nursery rhyme.

Maya tried to reach into her pocket, but Julian snatched her wrist, his grip firm but careful. "Who's calling you at this hour?"

"It's private, please—"

Before she could stop him, Julian tapped the screen to answer and put it on speaker.

A cheerful, high-pitched child's voice bubbled through the phone speaker, echoing in the quiet study:

"Mommy! Mrs. Gable let me stay up! When are you coming home? Look, I painted a picture of us and the big moon!"

Julian froze. His grip on Maya's wrist loosened slightly as his eyes widened.

Maya reached for the phone in a panic. "Lily, sweetheart, Mommy is at work, I'll call you back in—"

"Mommy, my heart feels a little fluttery today, but I took my medicine like a good girl!" the little girl chirped innocently. "Miss you!"

The call disconnected.

Silence descended on the room like a heavy blanket.

Julian stood motionless, staring down at Maya. The cold rage in his violet eyes had vanished, replaced by a sudden, piercing intensity as he processed the child's voice—and the unmistakable description of her medical condition.

"Maya," Julian said softly, his voice trembling with a terrifying blend of shock and sudden realization. "How old is that child?"

Maya swallowed hard, clutching her phone to her chest. "She's... she's four."

Julian took a sharp breath, his gaze sweeping over Maya's terrified expression. Four years old. The timeline hit him like a physical blow.

"What is her name?" Julian demanded, taking a step closer, his voice dropping to a thunderous whisper. "And why does she have a heart flutter?"

Maya pressed her back against the door, her voice barely a whisper. "Julian, please... she's just my daughter."

"Who is the father, Maya?" Julian grabbed both of her shoulders, forced her to look straight into his icy violet eyes—the exact same eyes he had seen in his own mirror every day of his life. "Look at me and tell me the truth!"
