"Natalia is back. And I’m making her my wife."
My spoon froze halfway between the bowl and my mouth. I stared at Lucas, the seriousness in his eyes as he spoke those words like it was the simplest thing in the world. Realization suddenly hit me like a bucket of ice water, I had made a grave mistake.
Lucas and I have been together for three years. I met him at the lowest point of my life, and he had given me the stability I had craved so much. I thought I had found my forever in him.
Stupid me even thought he was going to propose when I found a beautiful ring in his jacket pocket this morning. I made every preparation to say yes, made his favorite for dinner, wore a beautiful red dress. But instead of being proposed to, he wants to get back with his first love who had gone abroad three years ago for treatment after being diagnosed with cancer, and he wants to marry her.
"H-how can you?" I stammered, my heart clenching so painfully in my chest. "You are going to leave me, after everything we have been through. Why?"
"I’m not going to leave you. We have been together for three years now, I can’t just let you go. But Natalia has been a big part of my life, she was my first love. I can still see a future with her. That’s why I’m giving you a choice. You can stay with me. Be my mistress. I will provide you with anything you want. Natalia’s health is fragile, she won’t have a problem with this."
I scoffed, willing myself not to cry. "And I’m supposed to thank her for that? For giving me the chance to be your whore, since she’s too weak to satisfy your needs?"
Lucas had the decency to look ashamed.
"You’re being unreasonable," he said, "You barely have anything to your name, not even your meager salary can cover your rent in New York City. If you are left alone, you will be homeless by the end of the month. If you stay with me, I’ll take care of all your financial needs and you won't have to worry about a thing. Only a dumb person would say no to my offer. This is a golden opportunity for you. Women like you don’t have a choice.”
A lump formed in my throat, the food tasting like ash on my tongue. I forced myself to swallow it down. I couldn’t speak, couldn't do anything but sit there and listen as Lucas calmly explained to me why I should let him cheat on me and become his side bitch.
He sat closer to me, placing his arm around my shoulders, and stroked my cheek tenderly with his other hand.
"Don't feel bad, darling," he whispered in my ear, "Many women would kill to have your place. And I will take good care of you. All you have to do is to follow a few rules, and everything will be perfect. But for now, I have to leave. I have to go pick Natalia up from the airport. Don’t miss me too much, baby girl."
I heard him put his jacket on and opened the door. "Oh and before I forget, here is your paycheck for the month," he said, placing an envelope on the dining table, "You deserve it, darling."
With a soft click, he was gone.
I sat in silence, staring blankly at the envelope containing my paycheck, not quite knowing how to react. Anger clouded my mind, angry at myself for letting this happen, angry at him for making me feel like I had no choice.
I looked down at the table of food made with so much love. I packed the food and threw it into the trash can, taking off my dress in my bedroom like it burned my skin. I felt so disgusted.
The hot water of the shower pelted down on my skin, washing away my body. But it did nothing to wash away the disgust I felt towards myself.
The steam cleared, and my reflection stared back at me in the mirror. I walked back into the room and my phone buzzed on the bed.
I picked it up, and the headline was the first thing I noticed: Notorious Bachelor Lucas Hart, 29, proposes to his first love and childhood sweetheart, Natalia Rossi!
My heart broke as I saw the picture of Lucas proposing to Natalia on one knee, the same ring I found in his jacket pocket, in the photo being slid onto her finger. The camera zoomed in on Natalia’s face and a gasp escaped my lips. It was like staring at myself, but a thinner, sicklier version of me.
Tears blurred my vision as the reality of what had just happened washed over me, the truth of his betrayal slapping me in the face. I was never going to be his wife, I was the closest thing to the love of his life. He had only been with me because of how similar I looked to her. A mere substitute.
A bitter laugh bubbled out of my throat. How stupid I had been. To think he had genuinely loved me. He had wanted me to be her. That’s why he made dye my hair blonde from its dark brown like hers, why he had persuaded me to grow my hair long like hers.
I picked up a pair of scissors and walked back into the bathroom. My hand was shaking, but I brought the scissors to the ends of my hair. I didn't stop until the long blonde strands lay scattered on the floor.
I picked up my phone and dialed a number I hadn’t called in three years.
"Bianca," My father’s voice answered, "To what do I owe this sudden call?"
I mustered all the courage in my body and spoke.
"Dad," I said, "I accept. I will come back home for the arranged marriage and take back what’s mine."
"I should have never left. I was stupid and naive and I should have never disobeyed you. Now, it's time to return home and take back my inheritance."
Benjamin“Yes, so the capital will be-” my phone dinged on the table. I chuckled, “excuse me,” I raised my finger as the board meeting went on. I flicked the message from Oliver and…fuck. My dick swelled instantly, straining to be set free.“You’re in so much trouble when I get home,” I texted back immediately.“How much trouble, Daddy?” he replied with another picture of him. He was in tight leather pants that left nothing to imagine, with a whip wrapped around his neck.Fuck this meeting.I coughed softly, disrupting the attention of the presenter, “I’m sorry but you may have to go on without me. I have…an emergency at home, my boyfriend is having an…episode.” They gasped and nodded quickly, whatever they thought episode meant, I didn’t know, neither did I care to ask.“Oliver! You’re a dead man!” I shouted as I burst into the room and ran up the stairs into the bedroom. As soon as I found him leaning on the wall with a prideful smirk on his face, I slammed his back against my room
Oliver“Please, tell me he will be alright,” I whispered, the tears caking on my cheek because of the wind.“Sir, please, stand aside,” the paramedics pushed me aside as they hoisted William on the stretcher into the back of the ambulance.“You killed my son!” His mother shrieked inside the vehicle as they glided in. The doors closed before the night air was torn by the loud screams of the ambulance, tearing into the road and down to the hospital. The puddle of blood was a distance off, from where he had hit his head hard and cracked it open. The blood had formed a halo, and he looked like a disjointed angel, begging for death. I ran down the steps, slamming the dial for the ambulance before I arrived on the ground. The ragged breaths he took, his slow, painful wheezes, but all I could do was stand and watch him till the ambulance arrived.I had called his mother a few seconds after I called the ambulance, and she arrived just in time. I found the courage to walk: the cold air nibblin
OliverI gasped , clutching my chest. The beads of sweat had pooled around my body, soaking my entire sheet. My heart was palpitated, ready to burst out of my chest. I scanned the room, and the empty motel room was illuminated by the dingy light from the wardrobe.I wish I could say that it was a nightmare, I wish I could sleep it off and wake up to the fact that everything was alright, but I knew it wasn’t. My heart ached, burned even when I found out that he was dead. The thought of it left me scarred, how it had happened so fast, how the news had smacked me coldly in the hospital. I didn’t expect him to die, there was no way he could. People like him don’t die, they had too much money to.And his company? How the fuck would it go on? Would his mother take her grimy hands and rule? He always said that his mother wanted the company, under the guise of the prosperity of it. Now, she had access it.I grabbed the bourbon from the side table, and took a swig. The liquid burned down my t
Benjamin The entire room was swarmed with silence, so thick I could hear the crickets through the closed windows. Veronica’s mouth hung open for a split second before it curled into a smirk. “Wow, never thought you had it in you,” she chuckled. I eyed the gun in her hands. If I ran toward her, there was a possibility I could hit her before she fired. I swallowed. It was risky, but it was possible. I didn’t dare turn to see the surprise that was surely painted on my mother’s face. It wasn’t a sacrifice, it was a distraction. Inasmuch as I disliked my mother and what she had done, I couldn’t kill her. I couldn’t stand by and watch Veronica take her life for any reason. “What the fuck, Benjamin!?” Anna rushed from her seat toward my mother. “If you take another step, I’ll put a bullet in your head,” Veronica angled the gun in their direction, her focus diverted from me. I crouched slowly, not too quickly to attract her attention. I grabbed a pillow and whipped it acro
Oliver.I felt like the earth should vibrate in its core and shift so I could fall into it. The squelch as I took up from the ground, covered with the debris from the cake chunks, left my entire cheeks feeling red and my ears sore. I couldn’t even look up to look into the eyes of the people who wer
Benjamin I lied. I fucking lied because that was the one thing I knew would solve his problem. I knew he would eat himself alive with the thoughts of how he had murdered her, so I told him the one thing he wanted to hear. Felicia was dead by the time my private doctor arrived; her blood had marin
Benjamin I had to lie to him...again. He was too fragile to handle the truth of Felicia’s death. I didn’t want him to worry about what the repercussion of killing her would be. All I wanted him to do was focus, on what exactly? I wasn’t sure. But I wasn’t lying completely. Felicia didn’t have a ch
OliverI heard a ripple of gasps from the crowd and it made me wonder what I did that was so horrible. I was trying to save Benjamin from ruining his life with this mistake of a marriage. My eyes felt heavy as if an anchor was attached to my eyes lids and they were left to hang over board. “Young
