Marcus was moving before the call disconnected. Sprinting out of the media lab, he shouted for Lena. "Get two units to Amelia’s apartment. Now!"

Lena didn't waste time asking for context. She lunged for her radio while Marcus hurried toward the parking garage. His phone remained active, humming with static. Through the speaker, he heard the shallow sound of Amelia’s breathing.

"Listen to me, Amelia," Marcus said, forcing his voice into a measured calm. "Do not open the door."

A pause stretched

The emergency lights cast long amber reflections across the stone floor as the archive settled into an uneasy silence. The secure link to Site Zero had vanished completely, leaving Marcus and Gabriel alone beneath the mountain. Above them, the measured footsteps continued their descent, never hurried, never hesitant. Whoever led the search understood the value of patience. There was no need to rush when every exit had already been accounted for.Gabriel crossed the chamber and extinguished two of the remaining lamps, allowing deeper shadows to reclaim the edges of the room. The reduced light seemed deliberate rather than defensive, as though he wanted the archive itself to become difficult to read."They've studied our habits," he said quietly. "They'll expect us to retreat toward the lower vault."Marcus noticed that Gabriel had not moved in that direction at all. "So we won't."A faint smile appeared on the older man's face."Now you're beginning to think like a custodian."He knelt

The footsteps above them were measured rather than hurried, each one echoing through the stone stairwell with unsettling confidence. Whoever had reached the upper level wasn't searching aimlessly. They knew exactly where they were going, advancing with the assurance of people who had already studied the archive's layout. The silence between each step was almost as unnerving as the sound itself, suggesting discipline instead of recklessness.Gabriel motioned Marcus toward the far side of the chamber, where towering bookcases partially concealed a narrow alcove. "Don't open the satchel yet," he whispered. "If they see what's inside, this archive becomes impossible to defend."Marcus followed without question. The satchel felt surprisingly light, far lighter than he expected for something valuable enough to justify an assault on one of Daniel's archives. Whatever it contained, its importance clearly outweighed its size.Another impact reverberated through the ceiling. This time it was f

The circular doorway stood open at the end of the passage, its bronze surface etched with twenty-four interlocking emblems that shimmered faintly beneath the chamber lights. No sound emerged from beyond it. Instead of revealing another corridor or room, the opening was filled with a shifting veil of pale light that concealed whatever lay on the opposite side. It looked less like a machine and more like an invitation that had been waiting decades for someone to accept. The countdown on the communicator continued relentlessly.-17 minutes.Marcus turned back toward the Council of Eight. "We don't have time for a long discussion.""Then don't make it one," Peter replied. "Decide."Marcus looked around the room. "If only one of us can cross, it has to be someone who can think under pressure, negotiate if necessary, and make decisions without waiting for instructions."Richard smiled faintly. "You are describing yourself."Before Marcus could object, Margaret nodded."You've been doing tha

The countdown on the communicator continued to decrease, each passing second transforming the situation from a mystery into a decision. For weeks, the Council of Eight had followed Daniel Mercer's trail, uncovering secrets and interpreting clues left behind by a man who had prepared for every possibility. Now, for the first time, they faced a threat that did not exist in the past. It was happening in the present, and the consequences would belong entirely to them.Marcus remained focused on the display."Forty-two minutes is not enough time to reach Archive Nine."Commander Navarro studied the information available on the screen before answering."Not physically."The response caught everyone's attention."If the Guardian Network can establish a connection between archives, there may be a transfer system. Not for people, but for emergency information."Isaac immediately began searching through Site Zero's interface. Unlike before, the archive responded slowly, as if recognizing that t

The amber marker continued pulsing on the world map, unlike the red warnings that had appeared before it. It did not indicate destruction, infiltration, or a lost guardian. Instead, it represented something far more unusual: a direct request for contact from an archive that had chosen to break its own silence.Marcus watched the signal for several seconds before responding. The message from Archive Nine carried none of the panic that had accompanied Dr. Miriam Okoye's warning, yet the urgency behind it was unmistakable. Whoever controlled Archive Nine had deliberately reached out at the exact moment the Guardian Network was vulnerable, suggesting they either knew the situation had changed or had been waiting for Site Zero to awaken."Should we answer?" Richard asked. No one responded immediately. The question appeared simple, but every person around the table understood the risk. Daniel had built the network on separation and caution. Opening a communication channel was not merely acc

The screen remained black long after Dr. Miriam Okoye's recording ended. No one reached for the controls. Her final words lingered in the chamber, not because they were dramatic, but because they were spoken with the calm conviction of someone who had already accepted the consequences of her situation. Marcus replayed the final seconds in his mind. She had never pleaded for help. She hadn't asked the network to send reinforcements or recover Archive Nineteen. Instead, she had issued a warning. "Don't come here to rescue me." He turned to Evelyn. "Why would she say that?" Evelyn didn't answer immediately. She watched the frozen image on the screen before speaking. "Because she understood Daniel's first rule." "And that was?" "The archive always comes before the guardian." The words landed heavily around the table. Throughout their journey, Daniel's clues had often emphasized sacrifice, but hearing the principle stated so plainly gave it a different weight. Every custodian accept
