My inconsistency at the workplace has been piling up, and today is one of those days I have to send yet another email asking for permission to be absent. My finger glides across the red button and it clicks Send. I sit quietly, staring at the white ceiling of the hospital when the doctor walks in with a file and a wide smile on her face. That kind of smile that is either too good… or about a change in everything. “Congratulations, Elodie,” she says softly, “you’re pregnant.” My heart races, skipping a beat as I blink once. Twice. Then I laugh. Not a happy laugh. A bitter, crack sound that makes the nurse beside her shift uncomfortably. “I think you're mistaken here,” I whisper, shaking my head. “I can't be.” But the smile on her face didn't falter. “I ran the test twice. You're eight weeks along. There's no mistake.” My throat tightens, and my fingers curl around the strap of my purse, squeezing it like I’m holding on to reality. Pregnant? Me? “How?” I squint as the word slips from my lips. Dr. Lucy lets out a soft chuckle. “How? You don't mean that, do you?” My lips curl inwardly, in response to her harmless gesture. It has been barely two months since I moved down to Emberveli town—since after Mason left me. Adjusting to the new environment hasn't been so smooth to me, now this. This is a cruel joke from the universe. I’m finally carrying a child? A miracle I prayed for endlessly to save my marriage but it never came. Why now? After all I've been through? My eyes burn, threatening to unleash flow, but I blink fast. No tears, not here. “So now, Dr. Lucy says, breaking the silence, “you’ll need to level up the care you give yourself, knowing there's a life growing inside you.” “Yes, Doctor.” I nod, forcing a faint smile that doesn't reach my eyes. “Here,” she says, handing me the test results. “Ensure to go through it and follow up all the instructions there. Congratulations once more Elodie.” “Thank you.” I say and swallow hard. I walk out like a ghost, clutching the paper with trembling hands. When I get to the major road, I wave for a cab. As it pulls to a drive, I lean my back on the soft leather seat, speechless, except for the rustling sheet of my lab test breaking the silence. In less than an hour, I’m back to my apartment. I pay the driver and step out. I rush inside, slam the door shut and stand there freeze, still holding the result. “I, Elodie…Pregnant…?” I stagger backwards until my legs find the edge of the couch, and I collapse onto it. My hands quiver as I place it over my flat stomach, the same stomach my ex and his mother had mocked. “You're barren. Useless. A disgrace to our name.” Those words still echo in my head like a cruel chant. A single tear rolls down my right cheek. Another follow. Then a loud, broken sob racks my body as years of shame and rejection come crashing. I weep for years I spend begging God for a child to save my marriage, and now when no one expects it, life blooms inside of me. A wave of happiness and confusion washes over me at the same time. How am I going to survive? I barely feed properly. “I'm finally going to be a real mother? I whisper through my sob, squeezing joyfully through my teeth. “But for who?” I blink hard, trying to force back the tears that are slipping out. “For a man who treated me with no respect like I meant nothing?” I close my eyes against the rush of pain that fills me. “I'll keep you safe, my baby, away from Mason.” I said and move my hands across my stomach. “I promise.” Just then, my stomach churns violently as a sudden rush of nausea sweeps past me. I rush to the bathroom, holding my mouth with one hand and pressing the other against my belly. I lean over the toilet bowl and gag, my body shaking with the force of each heave. A Bitter bile and remnants of my meal surges up my throat, leaving a sour taste in my mouth. When it finally stops, I wipe my mouth with the back of my hand and let out a weak bitter laugh. “So… it's real after all.” I murmur. … Five years later… Oh my God. It's almost 5 p.m. I’m late again. Hurriedly, I grab my handbag and dash out to the busy road. I wave down a cab. “Main and Elm, please,” I pant as I hop in. “Quickly!” The driver nods and speeds off. But barely ten minutes into the drive, rain starts, pouring heavily. Suddenly, the road clusters and I get stuck in traffic. I tap my foot nervously. “Please…go faster.” He sighs but doesn't answer. I stretch my neck, trying to see past the sea of cars ahead. Just then, my phone buzzes with a message from the school: "Liam is waiting safely at the drop-off point” I exhale deeply. I feel relief and whisper a soft “Thank you Jesus.” I put the phone back into my bag. Shortly the road clears. The cabbie speed forward as fast as he could, but nothing prepare me for the scene I meet when he turn the corner. A silver car divert sharply at the school drop-off point. And Liam. My Liam is right there. My eyes bulge as I watch it speed towards him. Panic crawls through my veins. My pupils dilate. “No. No, no.” My scream catches in my throat. “Stop, stop, stop. I slap the front seat, praying my fears were wrong. The moment it slows, I fling the door open and dash out. My bag spills onto the wet road but I don't care. A small crowd is gathering. Hazard lights blinking nonstop. And then I see him. His small body… lying still on the wet ground. There, a man in a soaked dress shirt is already kneeling, performing a frantic CPR. My heart nearly stops. “Liam!” I scream, as I push through the people. My legs gave out when I reach them and see his pale face, blood smears on his temple, and one of his shoes had flown off. I kneel closely beside him, my heart drops. “No! Liam!” Voices were muttering words from behind but I could barely hear them. My entire mind zeros in Liam. “Baby… Mama is here. Please…open your eyes.” Tears blur my vision. My hands tremble as I cup his face. But when his body gives no response, my fear grow stronger. “The ambulance has arrived." A voice speaks. “Help my baby! Please!” My words hang in the air like a challenge as EMTs move in swift motion.Travis Beneath the Milton Tower lies the great council chamber. A hidden floor buried under layers of security, accessible only through control authorization known to the highest members of the family.I stand before the metallic door, resting my fingers beside the scanner as the system waits for my identity.“Travis Milton Albernathy.” I whisper calmly and the door unlocks swiftly.Inside, the chamber is exactly how I already knew it'd be, very cold and intimidating.A circular table sits at the center, surrounded by representatives of the founding families, the extreme council CEOs, code keepers, and the oversight members. The moment I enter, every face turns toward me with judgement, carrying heavy questions and sanctions that almost don't allow me to sit before it spills out.My skin feels grilled but I hold it, hoping I even get the chance to defend myself before I get consumed.Although there is no window, the temperature is maintained but now it feels sophisticated. Travis“Any confession on who sent them?”Nathan sits a few feet away, arms folded across his chest, watching me from the corner of his eyes.“They totally refused to speak up.” he replies. A faint chuckle that doesn't in any way suggest flatter leaves my lips. My body still aches from everything that happened, and every breath reminds me that someone out there wanted me dead.“Then they should get ready to rot in prison.”He adjusts in his seat, shifting closer in a concerned expression. “One thing I’m sure of is that whoever they’re working for has something bigger to hide.”“Exactly. Which is why I won’t take this lightly with anyone involved.”With the chaos that has been thrown into my life, I hate to imagine that some people are probably spreading their own version about what happened and might even be entertaining themselves with my pain.I press the TV controller beside me, hoping I won’t see anything but the moment the screen lights up, I see Vivian sitting comfortably with
ElodieI am still squeezing Travis's feet with the cold towel in my hand when the doctor snaps his first aid box shut and the echo gathers in my ear, maybe because my nerves are still rattling, “Put your fears out, okay! The sedative is wearing off, so he’ll be awake in a short time.”Thank God nothing went wrong. “Alright… thank you, doctor.” I smile, waving at him while pretending to now be in a relaxed state as he is already taking his leave.Just then, the bedroom falls back to its original suffocating silence with the man I love so much lying motionless like a log of wood and his best friend leaning speechlessly at the window side, gazing into the empty compound.I slowly put back the damp towel into the bowl of water beside me and wipe out sweats from my forehead, then thoughts come crawling. How exactly would I have explained myself to Milton’s family if something had happened to their golden son? With the whole gossip going on about my ex and I? They'd just conclude I'm on
Mason's POV For no good reason, Serena shifts in her seat, fanning herself like she is suffocating already but I pretend like I don't notice it. My mind is trying to make sense of what is going on.“Can you now talk to me, my son?” mother whispers, rising halfway from the couch. “That slut thinks she can hide my grandson from me…”“Enough, mother!” I snap, my voice echoing through the open space and she freezes.“Mason…calm down and talk to me.” she now says cautiously, confusion flickering across her face.“He’s missing. Isn’t that what you all wanted?” I tug a hair behind my ears. She gasps, holding a hand to her chest, eyes already becoming glassy with fake tears. “How can you say such nonsense?” “You were part of the reason she left! You told her she would never give me a child, now you see where it has gotten us into? My child is gone.” I say in a cracking voice, despite my effort to pull myself to calm.“That is not true and you know it!” she cries defending herself. “I only s
Travis“Are you telling me that none of the security, not even the footage, could note this vehicle?” I thunder, holding firmly around my phone like I can squeeze answers out of it.“I’m sorry, sir,” the voice on the other end echoes, weak and useless.“Apologies aren’t what I want right now. I want my son. Where is Liam?”No response comes again, I can only feel his trembling whimpers. I hiss, dropping the call.“Claudy,” I snap at my chief guard and he comes up instantly. “Deploy more men and search everywhere, both inside and outside the neighboring streets and cities.“Yes, sir.” He bows quickly and motions to the others. Their urgency ripples through as their boots shuffles and they scatter.I puff out air, pacing around the garden, already thinking of other possible solutions. “This can’t be happening now, custody proceedings are just in two days.” I mutter.Rushing back upstairs, I meet Elodie, sitting on the marble floor, her dress damp with tears, fingers trembling, but the m
Serena Voices from the television cut through open space like a blade, striking at my aching chest.“The report this morning shows an altercation between the wife of the Ecoplus Company and the manager of Nebulus-XR…”My stomach churn, slowly pushing down its content out of my body.“The two women have been believed to have…”And that is it, the screen suddenly goes black.Lifting my head and turning immediately, I see it is my mother who turned it off as the remote is still in her hand. He lips pressing into a thin line and she exhales.“You shouldn’t be seeing that nonsense.” She tosses the remote onto the table. “Look at how that pig embarrassed you out there, feeding all those hungry bloggers with fresh headlines.”I just draw my eyes, head tilting backwards as I shake off the fatigue hanging in me, I’m staring at my reflection in the dark TV screen—my hair slightly out of place, my lipstick worn off at the edges.“I feel so pathetic right now.” I cradle my face in my hands My m
Travis Without knocking, I slide the glass door open. My eyes, hoping to meet Liam and his Nanny but surprisely, it falls on Elodie. My pace instantly slows. I don't expect to see her here. She leans forward near the bedstand, watching nurse Jamelia as she dresses her son with a gauze bandage.Wh
Elodie“But I didn't do anything,” she tilts her head, raising a palm. “I was only trying to lighten things up. It's was too quiet.” “Lighten where?” I arch a brow. “For someone who just welcomed you into his house the first time?” I whisper. She doesn't respond. Just breathe out air and continue
TravisI enter the ward and there she is, chatting and feeding her son while she giggles. Her friend is there too.Suddenly, her expression shifts instantly the moment our eyes meet.“Hi ladies, good evening.” I greet them with a wave.“Hi Travis,” she springs up at once and walks over with a wide
Elodie Relief washes me as we get into the sitting room. It is entirely a peaceful environment, not like the chaos outside. “That's enough now.” I complain, pulling my head off. I quickly yank his hand off my back, not caring about his protective intention for doing it in the first place. He bli
