Chapter 3

Author: Cat Eat Fish
By the time I returned to the company, it was almost 11:00 pm.

The entire floor was still brightly lit. The PR department was running at full speed, and the large display screen showed Seraphine's engagement announcement metrics climbing in real time.

"The reveal was absolutely worth it. Her devoted-lover image is locked in."

"A seven-year relationship? The public eats that stuff up."

"Mr. Norman's handsome, too. The comments are all praising how perfect they look together."

Someone spotted me and waved me over. "Levi, perfect timing. You know their relationship timeline better than anyone. Put it together for us. We want to post it tonight."

Every pair of eyes in the office turned toward me. I almost laughed.

They were asking me, the man who had spent seven years as Seraphine's secret lover, to write the love story between her and another man, a story so moving that everyone would believe it.

I walked to my desk, sat down, and switched on my computer.

No one had a more complete archive of Seraphine's career than I did. I had backed up every interview, appearance, and private itinerary with painstaking care.

I stared at the neatly organized folders on my screen. My hand hovered over the mouse, but I couldn't bring myself to click anything.

The first time Seraphine ran a fever of 104 degrees, I was the one who wrote it down. The day an old injury flared up while she was filming an action scene, I wrote that down, too.

Every time her stomach acted up, every reminder that she couldn't skip meals or drink anything cold, I was the one who kept track of it.

Now, I had to replace the leading man in every one of those memories with a random dude called Will.

The PR director urged me on. "Quick, Levi. We need to post the relationship timeline now."

I came back to my senses and opened a new document. My face was blank. I typed out everything—how they met, fell in love, publicized their relationship, and got engaged.

Ironically, it felt like I was writing my own obituary.

At 1:00 am, the official account finally posted the announcement.

"Seven years down, forever to go." Attached were nine carefully curated photos.

I stared at the caption for a long time. My stomach lurched.

I shot to my feet and rushed into the restroom, gripping the edge of the sink as wave after wave of dry heaves wracked my body.

The man in the mirror looked deathly pale. His eyes were bloodshot, and he barely looked like himself anymore.

Meanwhile, my phone wouldn't stop vibrating. My friends and family were all asking what had happened. I didn't reply to a single one.

Just as I was about to lock the screen, Seraphine called. I declined it the first two times, but by the third call, I answered.

The line was quiet. A few seconds later, she asked, "Did you see the announcement we posted?"

I leaned against the sink, my voice flat. "Of course."

"Some of the comments are misleading. Keep an eye on them. And another thing—Will isn't used to being in the spotlight, so don't let anyone dig into his private life."

When she finished, the last trace of my foolish hope disappeared. She hadn't called to explain or express how sorry she was. She had called to make sure I protected her fiance.

A low chuckle escaped me. Her voice turned colder. "What are you laughing at?"

"Nothing. I just think you're remarkably dedicated, Ms. Winslow. You just announced your engagement, but you still haven't forgotten to keep up your perfect image."

Her tone sharpened. "Do you have to talk like that?"

"What else am I supposed to say? 'I'm so happy for you, and I wish you two a lifetime of happiness?'"

She sounded like she was holding back her temper. "Lee, I told you I'll make it up to you."

There it was again.

I couldn't bother to listen anymore. "If there's nothing else, I'm hanging up."

"Wait. There's a business dinner tomorrow. I need you to put together the presentation materials and lead it."

For a moment, I thought I had misheard her. "What did you just say?"

"The investors still haven't committed to the new film. We can't cancel that dinner. You know the process better than anyone, and you know all my habits."

I gripped my phone and fell silent. She really believed I wasn't going anywhere.

"Seraphine," I said quietly.

"Mm-hm?"

"Starting tomorrow, I won't be handling your schedule anymore."

There was a two-second silence before a scoff came. "What kind of tantrum are you throwing this time?"

"I'm not throwing a tantrum."

"Don't be such a child, Levi."

"Hey. You announced your engagement, had me clean up the aftermath, and now, you expect me to keep escorting you to business dinners. What makes you think I'd still stay?"

I could hear her breathing grow heavier. "Don't forget you're still under contract with the company."

"I'm well aware."

"Then, stop acting so recklessly."

I looked at my reflection in the mirror. For the first time that day, I felt completely calm. "I'll take care of the contract."

With that, I hung up. I scrolled to a number I hadn't called in a long time and called it.

A year later, Stormi and I got engaged. There were no trending headlines, no flashy announcement on a variety show, or an extravagant ceremony for the world to see.Our parents met, shared a homemade meal, and spent the evening together. After dinner, Stormi looked at the engagement rings on our fingers in the backyard and asked, "Do you think it was too… simple?"I shook my head with a smile. "Not at all."I meant it. There were no games, no secrets, and no future that never seemed to arrive. She remembered to bring me an umbrella when it rained. She picked me up whenever I worked late. She listened carefully whenever I talked about even the smallest things. On the rare occasions when memories of the past left me quietly staring into space, she never asked questions and simply stayed by my side.Through Stormi, I understood what it felt like to be loved the way I deserved. We never officially announced our engagement, but the news still spread among friends. That evening, Kai

"What does this mean? Didn't she literally just propose to that guy on TV a few days ago?""They weren't even trying to hide the fact that the relationship failed.""Is Seraphine okay? What's her publicist doing?"I stared at the statement, my heart sinking.Almost at the same time, Seraphine's call came through. This time, it wasn't from an unknown number. She had gotten a new one. After hesitating for a few seconds, I answered. Her voice was hoarse, like she hadn't slept in days. "Did you see it?"I frowned. "I did. What were you thinking?""I ended things that needed to be ended," she said. "I've dealt with Will. The engagement is off too."I was at a loss for words. This was totally out of character, even for Seraphine. She understood better than anyone what public opinion and personal interests meant. To deny the engagement publicly at a time like this was no different from destroying the devoted lover image she had carefully built."So?" I asked. The silence lasted for

"Blind date?"Seraphine stared at Stormi. The coldness in her eyes intensified by the second. It was as if she finally understood why I had taken a marriage leave.A laugh escaped her, but there was no warmth in it. "You sure moved on quickly, Levi."I pulled my wrist free from her grip. The skin was already red where she had held me. I slipped my hand into my pocket. "What does it have to do with you?"Seraphine looked at me, speechless by the realization that I wasn't speaking out of spite. She tried to step closer, but Stormi stopped her. "Ms. Winslow, as a public figure, causing a scene with a man in a residential area like this won't look good if word gets out."Causing a scene with a man… Every word made Seraphine's face more sour."This is between him and me," she shot back.Stormi smiled. "But he clearly doesn't want to speak to you."I looked at them and suddenly felt drained. "Enough."I turned to Seraphine. My voice was soft but sharp. "Aren't you all about ending

Levi's POVMeanwhile, I was on the train back to my hometown.I leaned against the window, too exhausted to even keep my eyes open. I hadn't slept at all the night before, and I spent the afternoon meeting Stormi despite the exhaustion. It wasn't until I was finally sitting on this train that I felt the tightness in my chest ease a little. When I turned my phone back on, the messages came flooding in. The company group chats, work chats, and media groups were all blowing up. I didn't open any of them.Suddenly, Dad sent me a message."What's your ETA? I'll prepare barbecued ribs for you tonight."My eyes suddenly warmed as I stared at those words. For seven years, I had always been the one managing Seraphine's emotions, cleaning up messes, and holding down the fort. Now, for the first time, someone was waiting for me to come home and have dinner.By the time I got off the train, the sky had already begun to darken.Dad had returned earlier than I did and was already waiting a

When the apartment door opened, the silence inside felt almost unnatural. Seraphine stood in the entryway. Her footsteps came to a halt. The living room looked the same as before. The thin blanket she always used was still draped over the couch. A half-open box of stomach medicine sat on the coffee table. The soup Levi had been preparing last night was still in the kitchen.Something was missing, and she noticed it immediately. His things were gone. The black leather shoes he kept by the door, the shaving foam he always used in the bathroom, and even the book he left on the nightstand were all gone.He hadn't taken much, but he had erased every trace that proved he had once been there.Seraphine stood at the bedroom doorway, her chest taut. This wasn't another argument. Levi was serious. Her phone rang. It was a message from Kai."Ms. Winslow, I forwarded Levi's handover documents to your email."She opened her inbox. Immediately, the email at the top caught her eye. It was sen

Seraphine stared at Kai. The coldness in her eyes was overwhelming. Under her gaze, he felt his scalp go numb."L-Levi sent the handover documents last night," he said shakily. "This morning, he went through the leave process with HR. He said he was… taking a marriage leave."The conference room fell into another eerie silence. The brand director was the first to recover. He forced a laugh and tried to smooth things over."Well, young people and their big life events, am I right? It's understandable. Ms. Winslow, why don't we start the meeting first?"Seraphine didn't respond. She reached out and took the documents from Kai's hands. After flipping through a few pages, the crease between her brows deepened.Levi didn't do this. The formatting was wrong, and the key points were organized differently. He always wrote a tiny note at the bottom right corner of the first page of every meeting document—a reminder about who from the brand team had a short temper, who cared most about nu
