Chapter One: The Coffee That Changed Everything

₦2,350.

Zara Daniels stared at the balance on her phone screen for the fifth time that morning. The numbers refused to change, as if mocking her.

She sighed and locked her phone.

"Morning, Zara!" her coworker, Tobi, called from behind the counter.

She forced a smile. "Morning."

"You look like you didn't sleep."

"I didn't."

That wasn't exactly a lie. She had barely closed her eyes. Between her overdue rent, her mother's hospital bills and the fear of losing her apartment, sleep had become a luxury she couldn't afford.

At twenty-three, this wasn't the life she'd imagined. She had graduated with good grades and big dreams, believing she'd land a decent job. Instead, she'd spent the last eight months working at Brew Haven Café, hoping every interview would be her last.

None of them ever called back.

"Table six needs two cappuccinos," her manager shouted.

"I'm on it."

Zara tied her apron properly and got to work. The smell of roasted coffee beans usually made her happy, but today even that couldn't lift the weight in her chest.

Her landlord's message echoed in her mind.

Pay before 10 a.m. tomorrow or vacate the apartment. No more excuses.

She swallowed hard.

Maybe she could borrow money.

Again.

But from who?

Everyone she knew was already tired of hearing the words, "I'll pay you back."

Around eleven, the café became unusually busy. Office workers poured in one after another, laptops tucked under their arms and phones glued to their ears.

The staff rushed from table to table.

"Careful with that order," Tobi whispered as he handed Zara a tray carrying two coffees and a slice of cheesecake.

She nodded.

"I've got it."

The entrance door opened.

A cool breeze swept through the café.

Almost immediately, conversations became quieter.

Some customers turned their heads.

Others sat up straighter.

Zara frowned.

Who was important enough to make an entire café go silent?

She looked up.

A tall man walked in wearing a charcoal-black suit that looked like it had never seen a wrinkle. His wristwatch probably cost more than everything she owned. His expression was unreadable—calm, distant and intimidating.

He wasn't smiling.

He didn't need to.

Power seemed to follow him wherever he went.

Behind him were two men dressed in dark suits.

Bodyguards?

Seriously?

"What is this?" Zara muttered under her breath. "A movie?"

Tobi's eyes widened.

"Don't you know who that is?"

She shook her head.

"That's Adrian Knight."

"And...?"

"The CEO of Knight Technologies."

Still nothing.

"You seriously don't know him?"

"I don't follow rich people."

Tobi almost choked.

"He's literally on business magazines every month."

"Oh."

She picked up the tray again.

Rich CEO or not, she still had customers waiting.

As she carefully walked toward table six, another waitress rushed past her.

"Sorry!" the girl shouted.

Their shoulders collided.

It wasn't a hard hit.

Just enough.

The tray slipped.

Zara's heart stopped.

"No..."

One cup tipped over.

Hot coffee flew through the air.

Splash.

Silence.

The dark stain spread across the expensive suit like spilled ink.

For a second, nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Zara stared in horror.

"Oh my God..."

The cup rolled across the floor.

One of the bodyguards stepped forward immediately.

"Sir."

Adrian lifted one hand.

The bodyguard stopped.

Zara grabbed napkins from the nearest table.

"I'm so, so sorry."

She reached toward his jacket before realizing what she was doing.

"I'm really sorry. It was an accident."

He looked down at her.

Those grey eyes were colder than she expected.

"You think saying sorry fixes this?"

His voice wasn't loud.

It was worse.

It was calm.

"I..."

She froze.

"I didn't mean to."

He glanced at the stain before looking back at her.

"I have an important meeting in twenty minutes."

"I'm sorry."

She hated how small her voice sounded.

The café manager came running.

"Mr. Knight! I deeply apologize."

He bowed slightly.

"This employee is new."

Zara blinked.

New?

She'd worked there for eight months.

The manager shot her a warning look.

"Apologize properly."

"I already did."

"Again."

She took another shaky breath.

"I'm truly sorry, sir."

Adrian studied her for a long moment.

She expected him to yell.

Or threaten to sue.

Instead, he simply asked,

"What's your name?"

"Zara."

"Just Zara?"

"Zara Daniels."

He nodded once.

Without another word, he removed his suit jacket and handed it to one of his bodyguards.

"Let's go."

That was it.

He walked out.

The bodyguards followed.

The expensive car outside disappeared a few seconds later.

Only then did the café begin to breathe again.

"Oh no..." Tobi whispered.

"You've done it now."

"What?"

"You spilled coffee on Adrian Knight."

"So?"

"So?" Tobi stared at her like she'd lost her mind. "Do you know how many companies he owns?"

She shrugged weakly.

"No."

"The man could buy this café ten times over."

"Good for him."

Tobi sighed.

"You really don't know who you've offended."

Her manager walked over with his arms folded.

"My office."

She followed quietly.

As soon as the door closed, he looked disappointed.

"I've defended you enough, Zara."

"I'm sorry."

"Sorry doesn't pay for designer suits."

She looked at the floor.

"I know."

"I've received three complaints about you this month."

"They weren't my fault."

He rubbed his forehead.

"Maybe not. But business is business."

Her stomach tightened.

"Please..."

"I'm letting you go."

The words hit harder than she expected.

She blinked.

"What?"

"Today's your last day."

Her eyes burned.

"I need this job."

"I'm sorry."

"No..."

She shook her head.

"You can't fire me."

"I already have."

Silence filled the tiny office.

Zara slowly removed her apron and placed it on the desk.

She wanted to cry.

She wanted to argue.

Instead, she forced herself to stand.

"Thank you for the opportunity."

Her voice almost broke.

She picked up her bag and walked out of the café.

Outside, the afternoon sun felt unusually hot.

She checked her phone.

One missed call.

Three unpaid bill reminders.

And another message from her landlord.

Tomorrow is your final deadline.

Zara laughed bitterly.

Could this day get any worse?

Just then, a sleek black SUV stopped a few feet away from her.

The rear window rolled down.

Inside sat Adrian Knight.

He looked directly at her.

"Get in."

Her heart skipped.

Every instinct told her to walk away.

But something in his expression made her pause.

She had no idea that accepting—or refusing—that invitation would change her life forever.
