Chapter 2

Author: Hunk Alert
That birthmark kept me awake all night.

Vivian assumed I was too excited about the baby to sleep. She got up several times to check on me and tucked the blanket around my shoulders.

The way she looked at me was complicated, filled with grief and fear.

The next morning, the moment Vivian left for the university, I sprang out of bed.

I rushed into the nursery.

The baby was still asleep.

With trembling hands, I pulled several strands of hair from his head and wrapped them in a tissue.

When I finished, I looked up at our wedding portrait.

Vivian looked elegant and intelligent in the photograph, her gaze full of devotion.

Who could have imagined such calculation beneath that beautiful face?

Vivian, if this truly was your secret child, I would make sure you answered for it.

I delivered the samples to AlderGen Diagnostics and paid for expedited testing, but the earliest result would still come that afternoon.

Back at home, I sat staring at Vivian's computer.

She was careful. Her phone never left her side, and the computer required a password.

But I knew the password to her private notes.

It was our wedding anniversary and my birthday.

I had never opened them before because I trusted her.

Now that trust was like paper torn through the center. It couldn't be put back together.

I took a deep breath and opened the notes.

I expected intimate messages with another man or records of hidden payments.

Instead, the screen displayed a series of strange numbers and dates.

I frowned. Vivian taught theoretical physics. Were these research calculations?

But the farther I scrolled, the colder I became.

The newest entries had been written during the past few days.

"He can't hold on much longer. His vital signs are collapsing."

"The transfer must be completed before the designated moment. The child is the only key."

"Aaron will accept this gift. As long as the child remains beside him, he will survive."

My hands began shaking, and I nearly lost my grip on the mouse.

Who was he?

The lover who had supposedly died?

Why did Vivian describe his death as a transfer?

And what did she mean when she wrote that Aaron would accept the gift?

What did she think I was?

She had delivered another man's baby to me like a present and claimed it would keep me alive?

The logic was so absurd that I almost laughed.

I continued scrolling and found an address at the bottom of the file.

[Hollow Creek Estates, House 16.]

Beside it was another sentence: [The ending is also the beginning.]

I stared at the address.

Hollow Creek Estates was a failed luxury development on the western edge of Briarwood, Franklin, abandoned for years and rumored to be haunted.

Why would Vivian go there?

Had that man been hidden there?

Or had the empty house been their private meeting place?

I photographed the screen with my phone.

Then I shut down the computer, cleared every trace, and restored the room exactly as I had found it.

By the time I finished, cold sweat had soaked the back of my shirt.

Vivian, what have you been hiding from me?

I shook my head violently and held Vivian's hand between both of mine, trying to warm her."No. This isn't punishment. You were trying to save me."Vivian's focus began to fade, but she continued staring at my face as though she wanted to carve it into her soul."I didn't have any other way."I couldn't watch you die, Aaron. Not even once."Eight times. Every time I lifted you from a pool of blood, another part of my heart shattered."Her fingers trembled as she tried to touch my face.I quickly pressed her cold palm against my cheek. Her skin was soft and freezing, bringing comfort and unbearable grief at once."The child is innocent."He belongs to both of us."Raise him and stay alive. Please."Don't try to die again."I'm begging you."Her voice grew weaker until the final words dissolved into a long breath. The hand against my face lost its strength and fell heavily. The heart monitor released a continuous tone, and the line flattened. That line did not only annou

By the eighth reset, Vivian had broken. She stopped trying to ease my despair and chose an extreme way to shatter the cycle.Using her knowledge of theoretical physics, she found a fracture between parallel timelines. She discovered another version of me: Elias Rowan. In his world, I was healthy and fertile. But that world's Vivian had died young in a traffic accident, leaving Elias alone. The Vivian from my world used the cost of temporal displacement to lure Elias across realities. She told him this was the future and promised that if he helped create a child, she could revive the wife he had lost.Elias believed her.He cooperated with the experiment and remained hidden in the abandoned house outside Briarwood.Did Vivian treat him well?Yes.But whenever she looked at him, her eyes held grief and guilt.Because she knew she was killing him.The laws governing temporal displacement couldn't be reversed. Two identical souls could not coexist in the same timeline for lo

I escaped through a damaged section of the window. But once I reached the street, I had no idea where to go.Where could I possibly run?Call the police? Would anyone believe this story?Return to my parents? No. Vivian would find me there. The fog inside my mind grew heavier, filled with voices arguing over one another."Aaron, why won't you die?""Aaron, the child is innocent."Without realizing it, I wandered into the road. The streets were empty before dawn, and the streetlights stretched my shadow across the pavement.Suddenly, blinding headlights swept toward me from the side."BEEEEEP!"The horn tore through the night. An out-of-control freight truck came directly at me.For one instant, time stopped.I watched the vehicle approach and felt no fear, only relief.Death might be easier. If I died, I would never have to face the truth.A violent impact sounded. But the truck did not strike me.At the final second, someone rushed from the side and slammed me into

When we returned home, Vivian shoved me into the primary bedroom and locked the door from the outside. The windows had been sealed, she took my phone, and she disconnected the internet.I was being held prisoner.Through the heavy door, I could hear her pacing in the living room.Sometimes I heard muffled sobbing.Other times, I heard her whispering urgently into a phone."He found it. The memories are beginning to overlap. What do I do?"The breach won't close. Is this attempt going to fail too?"No. I will not lose him for a ninth time. I won't."I pressed my ear to the door, cold spreading through my body.A ninth time? What did that mean?Had I already died eight times? On the third night of my confinement, exhaustion finally took her. Heavy breathing came from the living room. She had barely slept in days and guarded the door like a jailer.I stared into the dark night beyond the glass and remembered the journal. The first page had been dated three years earlier.

I had no idea how long I remained there.By the time I returned to myself, tears covered my face.I had known Vivian loved me too deeply to betray me willingly. So the truth was...Before I could finish the thought, hurried footsteps sounded downstairs.Vivian rushed into the bedroom, breathless and drenched in sweat. She saw the journal in my hands and found me sitting beneath Elias's memorial photograph. Her entire body froze, as if the life had been drained straight out of her."Aaron..."Her voice trembled. She reached toward me, wanting to help me stand, but stopped before coming close. "Don't read it. Please. Don't read any more."I slowly raised my head and stared at the woman who had shared my bed for five years. At that moment, she frightened me more than any ghost."Vivian." I lifted the journal, my voice so hoarse it barely sounded human. "Tell me who he was."Who am I?"Who were we?"Answer me, Vivian!"I screamed until my throat burned, crushing the journal

At three o'clock that afternoon, the paternity results arrived.[DNA analysis supports Aaron Scheffler as the child's biological father.][Probability of paternity: 99.99 percent.]The laboratory had originally requested a sample from Vivian, but the birthmark had made me submit my own instead. The world tilted around me.I braced one hand against the wall to keep from collapsing.I was the baby's father? How was that possible?I had never touched another woman, and I was medically infertile. My hand moved instinctively toward my lower abdomen. Five years earlier, Vivian had been caught in a laboratory explosion. I dragged her from the fire, but a collapsing steel support crushed the lower half of my body. The surgeons saved my life, but they said the damage to my reproductive system was permanent.Vivian knelt beside my hospital bed and swore that only my survival mattered. Children meant nothing if she still had me.Then what did this paternity report mean?If I couldn't
