When her work was done, Nadine picked up her small bag. She put on the cap that had fallen earlier, then ordered an online taxi to go home.

Inside the car that sped through the quiet night, she could only stare blankly at the empty road ahead. Every gust of wind reminded her of a reality she could never change.

But deep inside her heart, a faint hope remained — at least she was still breathing. That meant she could still earn money to support her family and pay for her father’s treatment.

---

Nadine lay on her narrow bed, her quiet sobs breaking the silence. Tears streamed down her face, soaking the pillow, as if every ounce of grief and shame within her was trying to escape all at once.

When her tears finally subsided, she rose unsteadily and went to the bathroom. The sound of running water filled the small space, covering her trembling frame. She washed herself again and again, trying to erase something that water could never remove. Her hands rubbed her skin until it stung, as if she could scrub away what still lingered.

But the longer she tried, the clearer it became — there was no water pure enough to wash away that pain.

After a long while, she stepped out of the bathroom. Her body was weak, her eyes swollen, her hair disheveled. She put on her nightclothes and stood before the small mirror on her desk. The reflection staring back made her breath catch.

Her cheeks were red and bruised, the side of her jaw slightly swollen. Faint marks trailed along her neck — reminders of a rough touch that had left more than physical wounds. Nadine touched her neck carefully, the pain radiating not only from her skin but from somewhere far deeper.

“I can’t go out looking like this…” she whispered to herself.

Every inch of her body ached; her head throbbed, and her vision swam. Her wrists were bruised, as if invisible hands were still holding her down. She sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the cracked ceiling, and murmured softly,

“Father… Mother… I’ll endure this. I’ll keep working so Father can continue his treatment. I’ll be strong, for both of you.”

Her eyes slowly closed. Her body still trembled, but her mind refused to give in.

That night, amidst the pain and despair, Nadine made a promise —

she would not let anything destroy her completely.

A promise whispered only to make herself feel strong.

---

The next morning, Nadine woke up weak and sore. Every movement felt like tearing open a fresh wound. She forced herself to stand and clean up again. Her gaze fell upon the mirror, and for a moment, she barely recognized herself.

But beneath the bruises, there was something else in her eyes — not just sorrow, but a faint spark of resolve.

She knew the road ahead would not be easy. Yet even though the world had stolen her dignity, she still had the will to live.

Nadine took a deep breath, looking at her reflection once more, this time with firmer eyes.

“Starting today,” she whispered, “I will not be a victim forever.”

“But how can I go to work looking like this?” she murmured, frowning. She sat for a while, thinking what to do. After a moment’s hesitation, Nadine decided to call her friend, Clara.

“Hello, Nadine,” Clara answered cheerfully.

“Clara, I’m sorry I haven’t called,” Nadine said softly. Her lips hurt with every word that left her mouth.

“Where are you? Why didn’t you come to work?” Clara’s voice sounded anxious.

Nadine went silent. Her whole body ached, especially her cheek that still burned from last night’s slap. I hope my ear isn’t damaged, she thought, gently touching her face.

She reached for the small mirror beside her bed. Her face was bruised, her lips cracked, her eyes swollen. “I can’t go to the shop looking like this,” she whispered.

“Nadine? Are you still there?” Clara’s voice rose slightly, startling her.

“Sorry, Cla… I just woke up. Um, can I take a day off?” Nadine’s voice trembled, fighting to stay steady.

“What’s wrong?” Clara asked, surprised.

“I’m just tired, Cla. Working all night was harder than I thought,” Nadine answered quietly. She covered her mouth to muffle her sobs. Tears rolled down again, unstoppable. The memories from last night flashed before her eyes — cruel, painful, uninvited.

Clara was silent for a moment before saying, “Yeah, it’s tough at first. Okay then, just rest today.”

“Thank you, Clara,” Nadine murmured softly.

“I’ll tell the boss you’re not coming in. Get some sleep, okay?”

“Thanks, Clara.” Nadine tried to sound cheerful, pretending to be fine so her friend wouldn’t worry.

“Alright, I’ll get back to work now. Bye,” said Clara before hanging up.

When the call ended, Nadine placed her phone on the bed and burst into tears once more. “Father… Mother… I miss you. If only you were here, I would hold you tight. I’m sorry, Mother… I failed to protect myself,” she whispered between sobs.

Nadine stared blankly at the ceiling, unsure of what to do. Her head throbbed, her body weak. “How do I get rid of these bruises…” she muttered, reaching for her phone to search online for home remedies.

After reading several articles, she set the phone down and slowly made her way to the bathroom. Every step sent pain through her body.

“It hurts…” she whispered when the ache flared. Her head grew heavier. She turned on the faucet, splashing her face with cold water, hoping the pain would ease even just a little.

She walked out carrying a small bucket of cold water. Dipping clean cloths into it, she began pressing them gently against her cheeks, forehead, and neck. “I hope the bruises fade soon,” she murmured, closing her eyes.

The sting spread across her skin. “Seeing a doctor would be too expensive… I don’t have enough money,” she whispered. “Payday’s still a week away. Maybe later… if the dizziness doesn’t go away, I’ll buy medicine from the store. It’s probably only five thousand rupiah.”

She pressed the cold cloth to the corner of her cracked lips and winced. “It hurts…” she whispered weakly.

The night air was cold. Sitting alone at the small station beside the restroom made it even harder for Nadine to fight off her drowsiness."If only there were another attendant here. At least I'd have someone to talk to," she murmured softly, rubbing her arms as the chill began to seep into her skin. She let out a long breath before reaching into her bag for her water bottle. After taking a few sips, she pulled out a packet of biscuits she had bought earlier at the supermarket."Maybe eating something will help me stay awake."Nadine nibbled on the biscuits slowly. Her eyelids repeatedly drooped before she forced them open again. The nightclub was unusually quiet that evening. Every so often, she entered the restroom to clean the floor and sinks before returning to her chair."Thank goodness... we can get a little rest tonight," she whispered, gently caressing her growing belly. From time to time, she paced the corridor to keep herself awake. Before she realized it, her shift had come

Every inch of her body ached after working almost nonstop for months. She gently stroked her growing belly."At last, we can finally rest. You must be tired too, staying with me through those long nights at work."A faint smile curved her lips before her eyes slowly drifted shut. The ringing of her phone woke her.Blinking sleepily, Nadine reached for the phone beside her pillow. Erna's name appeared on the screen. Her eyes widened when she noticed the time."Oh my goodness... it's already seven."She quickly answered the call."Hello, Mom.""Hello, sweetheart. Did you just wake up?" Erna asked gently."Yes. I accidentally fell asleep.""How are you feeling? Are you still getting sick often?""I'm much better now. I still feel weak sometimes, but not as often as before."Erna let out a quiet sigh of relief. For months, she had never truly stopped worrying about her eldest daughter, who had

Justine remained seated upright in his office chair. Even now, his anger over Tio's betrayal had yet to subside."I never truly trusted him from the very beginning. The moment he came begging me for a job, I already knew he wasn't a loyal man. Even so, I still gave him a chance."His jaw tightened."A traitor will always be a traitor."His fingers curled into a fist so tightly that his knuckles turned white. There was nothing he despised more than betrayal."I may have already eliminated him, but the people standing behind him won't get away so easily."He would not stop until he uncovered the mastermind behind it all.The phone on his desk rang, breaking his train of thought. As soon as she stepped out of the clinic lobby, the cool afternoon breeze brushed against Nadine's face. She walked with light steps, carrying a small paper bag containing her prenatal vitamins. The warmth she had felt after hearing her baby's heartbeat for the first time still lingered in her heart, filling her with a quiet sense of peace. As she walked, her hand instinctively rested on the gentle curve of her growing belly beneath her blue dress."You're hungry, aren't you, sweetheart?" she whispered with a faint smile on her pale lips. "The doctor said we need to eat nutritious food from now on."Remembering the doctor's advice, Nadine abandoned her plan to return straight to her rented house. Instead, she turned toward a small supermarket not far from the clinic. From now on, she could no longer neglect her own health for the sake of the tiny life that depended entirely on her.As she stepped through the automatic glass doors, a wave of cool air greeted her. She picked up a small

Nadine walked to a clinic located not far from her rented house. That afternoon, she looked graceful in a dark blue knee-length dress with an elastic waistband just beneath her bust. The simple dress, her favorite, was still comfortable to wear even though her belly had begun to show. She stopped for a moment in front of the clinic entrance. Standing there, she took a deep breath before finally gathering the courage to step inside."Come on, sweetheart. Let's go in," she whispered softly as she stroked her belly. She let out a quiet sigh of relief when she found the waiting room almost empty. Only a nurse was seated behind the reception desk."Excuse me, Nurse. I'd like to have my pregnancy checked. Is the doctor seeing patients today?" Nadine asked politely after taking a seat in front of the registration desk."Yes, ma'am. Have you been here before?" the young nurse in a white uniform asked with a friendly smile."No."The nurse nodded and picked up a registration form."All right.

"Nadine, do you want to come to my house?" Clara asked, looking at her friend.Nadine smiled warmly and shook her head. "I should head home. I still have laundry that needs to be hung out to dry.""All right, then. But call me when you're leaving for work later. I'll pick you up from your house," Clara offered sincerely. She genuinely felt sorry for Nadine. Throughout all this time, her friend had never once complained about the hardships she faced, even though it was obvious that her life was far from easy."You don't have to, Clara. We live in different directions. I'd only be inconveniencing you."Nadine declined gently. Clara had already done so much for her. She couldn't bear to trouble her any further."Oh, right. I almost forgot we got paid yesterday. That means you have money for the ride home now, don't you?" Clara said with a smile.Nadine nodded with a soft laugh."Of course, dear Clara. We just got paid, so don't worry. I still have enough money to get home on my own.""Ho
