*Chapter 2: The Begging

The silence after the king’s question felt heavier than the ocean itself. It pressed down on all of them, making even the currents stop.

Bale dropped lower, tail curling tight against the sand. His voice cracked as he spoke.

“Your Majesty, mercy! I’ve served you since I was a boy. I’d never betray you—”

He started rambling, words spilling out faster and faster as fear took over. His red curls floated around his face, wild and matted.

“I was only meeting King Dave to negotiate better trade for your kingdom! Better kelp prices! Stronger nets! I swear on my father’s grave—”

Then it happened.

His gills flared and his whole body spasmed. A dark cloud bloomed from his cloaca, staining the water around him in ugly black swirls. He’d lost control. Shame and terror all at once.

For a second, the king froze. His trident dipped.

Then he burst out laughing.

The sound rolled through the water, deep and brutal. It bounced off the coral walls and came back doubled. His guards shifted uncomfortably, fins twitching, but none dared join in. Laughter from them would be death.

Bale’s face went pale with shame, his tail lashing against the sand, stirring up clouds that couldn’t hide him. He was forty, the son of an elder, kneeling in his own filth before a boy-king.

The laughter stopped as suddenly as it started. The king’s face went cold. His eyes were flat now, like deep water with no bottom.

“Alpha.”

The leader of the guards stepped forward. A scar ran down his jaw, pale against dark skin, and his trident was already shifting in his grip, the points humming.

“Torture him until he tells me the truth. Every detail about King Dave. Now.”

Bale’s eyes widened. He knew what that meant. The Alpha didn’t ask twice. Didn’t miss. He grabbed Bale by the arm and dragged him back a few feet, trident tip pressing to his throat hard enough to draw a thin line of blood.

“Wait!” Bale choked out, water bubbling from his lips. “Wait, Your Majesty! I have something else! Something worth more than King Dave’s little meeting!”

The king raised a hand. The Alpha stopped, but didn’t let go. The trident stayed at Bale’s throat.

Bale gulped. His throat worked. “It’s about the silver comb. The long-lost comb of the royal line. It’s here. In this post.”

Beatrice’s blood went cold. The comb under her tunic felt like ice, then fire.

Mom’s fingers dug into her arm, nails sharp through skin. Her voice was barely a whisper, right against Beatrice’s ear, meant for her alone.

“Beatrice… be ready to run.”

The king’s eyes narrowed to slits. “A name. Now.”

Bale swallowed, shaking his head. He was trembling, but his voice steadied. “I… I can’t yet, Your Majesty. But give me until nightfall. I’ll bring you the comb, and the one who holds it. That’s worth more than any secret about King Dave, isn’t it?”

The king studied him for a long moment. Greed warred with suspicion in his expression. He wanted the comb. He wanted names. He wanted both.

Finally, he nodded once.

“Nightfall. Fail, and the Alpha finishes what he started.”

Bale sagged in relief, even as terror still shook him. Air he didn’t have rushed out of him.

The Alpha released him, but didn’t step back.

Beatrice didn’t move.

But her tail was coiled, ready.

Mom’s whisper still rang in her ears: _Be ready to run._

And somewhere under her tunic, the silver comb felt like it was burning her skin.

*Chapter 19: Gone*The alarm on Hector’s phone buzzed at 5:00 AM sharp. He didn’t hit snooze. Not today. The house was still dark. The kind of dark that sat heavy before the sun decided to rise. He swung his legs off the bed, feet hitting the cold floor, and dragged a hand down his face. He hadn’t slept much. Maybe three hours. Every time he closed his eyes he saw Beatrice’s face in the hallway. _Can I kiss you?_ And his own hands, shaking. He couldn’t think about that now.“Up,” he muttered to himself. “Move.”Down the hall, Simy’s door was already open. A sliver of light cut across the floor. Simy was lacing up his running shoes. Gray hoodie. Water bottle in hand. He looked up when Hector stepped out.“You’re up early,” Simy said. “Couldn’t sleep,” Hector answered. It wasn’t a lie. They didn’t talk much on the way out. The air was cold and clean. It smelled like salt and dirt. The road out of the house led down to the beach path. That was their route. Five miles. Ever

Chapter 18:*Borrowed Warmth* Beatrice sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the door.Hector was gone. He’d said _good night_Then he’d closed the door and left her alone. She sighed. She didn’t understand.Where she came from, under the water, things were simple. If someone did something kind for you, something that made you really, really happy, you showed them. You pressed your lips to theirs. One quick, warm kiss. That was it. That was how you said _thank you, that meant everything to me._Her mother used to do it to her father when he brought back the shiniest shells. Her friends did it when someone shared food during a storm. Even the elders did it after council meetings if someone made a good decision.A kiss was appreciation. A kiss was _I see you._ A kiss was never forbidden. So when she asked, _Can I kiss you?_ she meant it in the nicest way possible. She meant _thank you for the shirt. Thank you for the eggs. Thank you for not looking at me like I’m stra

  • The Current Between Us    Love At First Sight?

*Chapter 17: Love at first sight?Hector didn’t answer right away. The hallway felt smaller than it was. The walls were too close. The air was too warm. And standing in front of him was Beatrice, in his oversized shirt, hair damp, eyes wide and honest and asking him a question he wasn’t sure he could survive. Can I kiss you?The words hung there. Soft. Brave. And they hit him like a wave.Because the truth was, he wanted to. Gods, he wanted to. Since she’d whispered thank you over a plate of eggs like no one had ever fed her before. Since she’d looked up at him with those eyes. Those eyes. Blue. Clear. Steady. They did something to him. Something he didn’t have a name for. They reminded him of home. Of safety. Of a promise he’d made a long time ago and failed to keep. Looking at her felt like looking at a part of himself he’d buried. Her eyes remained him of his mom that murdered in cold blood right in front of him. That was the problem. His hands were shaking. He s

  • The Current Between Us    Steam and Shape.

*Chapter 16: Steam and Shape*The door clicked behind Beatrice and the lock turned.Hector didn’t wait in the hall. He left. Straight to the kitchen. He moved on instinct, hands doing what hands always did when things got loud in his head. Kettle on. Bread out. Pan on the stove. The fire in the wood stove had burned down to coals. He fed it. Orange light spilled across his face.He wasn’t eavesdropping. He told himself that. But he left the kitchen door open.In the spare room, Beatrice stared at the shower. It was a metal box with a glass door and two knobs. Water came out of a round head on the ceiling. Not waves. Not tide. A fall. From above. Like rain but endless. She touched the knob. Cold. She turned it. Water burst out.It hit her skin. And her legs changed.Pain flashed down her thighs, sharp and wrong. Bones shortened. Flesh fused. Skin split and sealed. Scales erupted along her shins, her calves, her thighs. Blue-green, shimmering in the steam. Her feet joined, toes sealing

  • The Current Between Us    The Warmth.

*Chapter 15: Warmth*The door closed behind them and the world changed.Sound changed. The wind that had been screaming across the cliff was cut down to a low hum. Footsteps didn’t sink. They echoed. Wood under her borrowed feet instead of sand. The house held air that didn’t move like the sea.Beatrice froze just past the threshold. Her eyes moved fast, cataloging everything wrong.A ceiling. Low and solid. Not sky. Not open. It pressed down. Lamps burned without flame. Glass and metal, humming faint. A box in the corner hissed and cold air came out of it. The smell hit her next: wood smoke, salt, old fabric, and something sweet and heavy. Bread. She’d seen none of it in twelve years. Her world was water, rock, current, fish. This was a cage with furniture. Her legs wobbled. The floor didn’t shift under her. That felt like a trick. She reached out and touched the wall. Solid. Warm from the fire. She pulled her hand back like she’d been burned.Hector didn’t watch her. Not directly. H

  • The Current Between Us    The House.

*Chapter 14: The House*The sand was finished. Lily was covered. Only the shape of her remained beneath the grain.Beatrice didn’t move. If she moved, the wind would steal her mother’s name.Hector crouched beside her. Salt had dried on his jacket. His green eyes didn’t look away. He let the silence run long before he spoke.“You can’t stay here.”Beatrice shook her head. Small. A refusal with her whole body.“No,” Hector said. Not cruel. Final. “Tide comes in higher after dark. You’re bleeding heat. You’ll freeze.”She looked at the grave. Then back at him. Her lips shaped the words with care: _I won’t leave her._“I know,” Hector said. He understood her mouth. “We won’t leave her. But you’re coming to the house. Just until morning. Just until you’re warm.”The word _house_ hit like a stone. Stone walls. No water. No exit.Beatrice pressed her palms into the sand and pushed up.Her legs betrayed her. They were borrowed. The sea lent them, but never taught them how to hold. Her knees
