I had a bouquet of roses in one hand and a wrapped box with the newest version of the precious moonlit diamond necklaces in another as I entered our quarters. Hopefully, they would be enough to make Evie shut up about the Moon Omega. I was fed up of her bringing that up, crying and begging me to mark her. It was becoming so annoying. My eyes narrowed when I found bedroom empty. Evie was not in bed. That was new. “Evie?” I called out as I made my way inside. What game was she playing now? I strode into the bathroom and then went to the closet. There was no sign of her. Where was she? I tried to reach her via mind link in vain. Her scent was faint so I could tell she wasn’t nearby. Unable to find her, I descended the stairs and went to the kitchen where I found two maids gossiping. They bowed respectfully when they saw me. “Good evening Alpha.” “Where is Luna Evie?” I asked. Ever since I got married, I’d never had to ask for my wife’s whereabouts because she was always waiting for me. The maids exchanged nervous glances. “We... we thought she was in the bedroom, Alpha.” I immediately went back to the bedroom and checked her side of the closet. I analyzed it in a way I hadn’t before. The wardrobe doors stood open and some dresses were missing from hangers. A drawer had been emptied. When realization sunk in, I froze. Evie was gone. At first, I thought she had been kidnapped but given the state of her closet, it seemed she had left by herself. My mate had run away. “No.” I growled, my wolf seething. Using my mind link, I summoned the two head warriors. They appeared outside the door almost immediately. “ALPHA!” “Come in,” I said and the warriors rushed into the room. “When was Luna Evie last seen?” I asked. “Does anyone know where she is?” “I last saw her this evening, Alpha.” “How come nobody stopped her?” I yelled. “How incompetent can you be?” “I’m sorry, alpha.” Zeke the deputy commander said. “Seal every border.” I ordered. “And find her. Search the forests, search everywhere.” “Yes, Alpha.” “Search every road leading away from Crescent Pack. Question every merchant, traveler and rogue. I want every neighboring pack contacted.” I was mobilizing half the territory for one person. My wife. Having understood the assignment, the warriors immediately rushed out and alarms rang throughout the pack. For the first time in years, I couldn’t feel her nearby. The bond between us was weak due to the fact that i had not marked her, but I had always known she was there. But now all I could feel was a deep emptiness. The warriors searched all night and the whole of the next day but there was no sign of Evie. It was as though she had vanished from the face of the earth. In the evening I went to my office to distract myself by working on some reports. But however much I tried, my thoughts kept returning to her. I thought of her beautiful smile and her immense love for me. Evie had lived for me, always doing everything to make me happy. She thought of me when no one did. My Luna always supported and defended me even when others criticized my decisions. She was very loyal and willing to go to the ends of the earth for me And what had I given her in return? Excuses and false promises. Had she really left me or someone took her away? Before I could dwell on the question, the office door opened. There was only one person in my pack who would dare to enter my office without knocking. “Leave.” I said without looking up. The only person I wanted to see was Evie. “I don’t think so.” My mother said as she came to stand in front of me. “What did you do to her?” “Why does it have to be something I did?” “No one has ever loved you more than that woman. She would never leave you unless you did something. Spill.”“ I shook my head. “I didn’t do anything.” “Okay what happened?” she asked. “Something must have triggered this.” “Last evening she asked me about the Moon Omega. She wanted me to mark her but I declined. It’s not the first time.” “That poor child. She must have got tired of waiting.” “She knew what she was signing up for when we got married,” I defended myself. She snorted. “That doesn’t mean she could handle it. Naive women usually think they can change a man. Unfortunately it’s impossible. .” “But I never mistreated her, mother. You know I took great care of her and made sure she never lacked anything” “But you never chose her. You didn’t give her the most important thing a woman wants from her man.” “How many times did you make her feel like your mate instead of your backup plan?” An uncomfortable feeling settled in my chest. “Mother—” “No. Listen. That girl worshipped the ground you walked on. She left everything for you and supported you even when the whole world turned against you. But you made her feel worthless. Everyone in this pack knew she cried herself to sleep whenever you were not around.” “What?” “You spent years chasing some power fantasy while ignoring the woman standing beside you.” I felt a deep ache in my chest, something I had never felt before. “I never wanted to hurt her, honestly.” The office door suddenly burst open and a warrior rushed inside. He was very excited. My heart leapt. I figured they’d found her. I shot to my feet. “Where is she?” The warrior didn’t speak immediately, he seemed to be struggling to find the right words. My mother and I faced him, making the young warrior even more nervous. “Did you find the luna?” I asked, feeling hopeful. Then man shook his head, his eyes narrowing. “No, Alpha. But we’ve found something even better. The Moon Omega.” “Where?” I asked, my entire body coming alive. This was it. Finally! “We’ve located the pack hiding her.” Only days ago, this news would have been everything I wanted. I’d have been excited, thinking of the power I was about to gain. But now I didn’t feel any excitement. I was happy but not in the way I expected. “Let’s go,” I told the warrior. “What about Evie?” my mother asked. “Evie left me, mother.” I said. “I’m not going to spend the rest of my life moping around because of her. Have a wonderful evening, mom.” I left before she could say anything. Evie had freed me. Now I didn’t have to worry about her. I could be as powerful as I wanted. Here I come, Moon Omega.Evie.An uncomfortable silence filled the car as we drove back to Crescent Pack. The kiss was still in my mind. I remembered his mouth on mine and the way his arms tightened around me in the forest like he never wanted to let go. I hated how much it affected me.Rodney sat beside me, one hand resting against the seat between us. His breathing had become steadier after touching me, but some frost still lingered under the skin of his throat.I caught him looking at me whenever he thought I wouldn't notice. After some time, I couldn’t take it anymore. I crossed my arms over my chest and stared straight ahead. “Just because I agreed to help you doesn’t mean I want you back. You’re not allowed to touch me inappropriately.”He didn't say anything. Neither did he pry his eyes off the road.“I’m doing this for Tommy,” I continued firmly. “He deserves to have his father alive.”Rodney watched me for several seconds before speaking. “And not for me?”The question irritated me. “This is exactly
Evie.Standing near the edge of the cliff path, I shivered as cold wind blew over me. The witches hid nearby beneath concealment spells, waiting for Rodney to arrive. The trap had been set, ready to swallow him whole.I stared down at the phone in my hands. The call log glowed faintly on the screen. Rodney. 1 hour.Evie? The sound of my name in his voice had nearly decimated my will power and I almost told him not to come but I’d forced myself to continue and asked him to meet me near the Cots Mountain Ridge. The sound of footsteps behind me pulled me from my thoughts. I turned and saw Cora approaching.“You’re way too nervous.” she said, giving me a once over.“Honestly, this is not easy for me.” I confessed. “I know, but you made the correct decision.”Did I? Even now, I wasn’t sure. The witches believed tonight would end with Rodney weakened and alone. What they didn’t know was that I called Rodney when they were gone and informed him about their plans. I felt his presence befo
Evie.“You want to do what?” I said, entering the room. Although I hadn’t figured out how to use my powers, I wasn’t afraid of the witches. “We shall remove the child from Crescent Pack.” Cora said. “We have a plan underway to get him out as soon as possible.”I wanted to be with Tommy but after everything I heard them saying, he was very much safer in Crescent pack than with these evil witches.“Rodney will never stop using him against you.” Cora said. It was true but that was none of their business.“What exactly is your plan?” I folded my arms over my chestThe witches exchanged glances. Those who had risen went back to sit. “We received reports that the curse has worsened. He’s dying and desperate” she continued. “Which means he’ll come over the moment he believes you’re willing to help him.”“And?”“We lure him away from the pack house.”“Do you want Tommy alone?”“No.”“You’re letting emotions cloud your judgment.” One of the older witches sighed.“That’s my child!”“And Rodne
Rodney.By the time I reached, Evie’s apartment, the only thing left was her beautiful scent. The scent clung to everything in the house and I could feel it everywhere. There was another unfamiliar scent but it seemed human. Strange. I went to the dining table and read through papers scattered across the top while warriors searched the rest of the apartment. There were a lot of things in the apartment but none that could explain where she had gone or who had taken her.“Alpha, we searched the building security room,” a warrior said as he walked in. “The cameras outside were disabled for approximately twenty minutes.”I looked up. “Disabled how?”“We don’t know yet.”I was still processing this when another warrior entered from the hallway.“We found traces of magic,” he said. Now the camera issue made sense. That made my wolf snarl. Witches. The first one that came to mind was Cora but I didn’t think she’d come all the way here for something so small. My fist clenched and Ice spread
Evie.“Stop trying to control it like a weapon,” my mother said as we stood in the middle of the coven’s underground training chamber. “The Fireheart is not separate from you. It is you.”Sweat slid down the sides of my face as I stared at the dancing flames hovering above my palm. The training chamber was enormous, made entirely from black stone. Ancient runes glowed across its walls and candles lined the circular room. Their fire looked weak compared to the heat bubbling in my body.Because I was untrained, the fire kept reacting to my emotions instead of my commands. Thoughts of Rodney made them stronger because they came with too much anger.“I’m trying,” I said through clenched teeth.“No,” my mother replied. “You’re just fighting yourself.”I glared at the fire in my hand and it immediately flared higher in response to my irritation. Wonderful.“You inherited emotional magic,” she continued, coming closer to me. I sighed heavily. We’d been down there for two hours and I was alre
Rodney.“Again?” Tommy groaned dramatically from the training mat. “I’m tired.”“You need to be strong,” I said. No son of mine was going to be a weakling. My father raised a strong man, and so would I.“But I’m tired.”I folded my arms across my chest, staring down at the boy lying flat on his back in the middle of the training field. He was truly my son, which was honestly quite strange to take in. For years, I didn’t he existed but now couldn’t go a single day without thinking about him.Tommy looked up at me with narrowed eyes that looked very much like Evie’s.“You’re trying to kill me,” he gave me an accusing look. Instead of intimidating me, it made him look too adorable.“You’re breathing. So unfortunately, no.” “Did you hear that, Uncle Damien?” Tommy looked toward Damien, who stood nearby watching the training session with keen interest. “He admitted he’s evil.”Damien snorted. “I’ve been telling people that for years.”I ignored both of them. The early morning air was cold
