LOGINDIANA
Father was the first to recover. He quickly grabbed mother’s arm and forced her down in a deep bow. Lisa scrambled to do the same, and within seconds, my entire family was bowing toward the shadow on the white horse. The silence stretched before his voice cut through the freezing air again. "Would it have been more respectful if I had attended the ceremony beside your daughter and killed her at the altar?" Draven asked, his tone flat and chillingly calm. Mother completely froze. Her head snapped up as her eyes widened with shock. Father quickly forced Mother back down, his voice shaking as he spoke. "Forgive us, Commander. Please accept my deepest apologies for my wife's outburst. She speaks only out of a mother's anxiety." From the distance, the hooded figure didn't move. "Your daughter will be taken care of," Draven said, completely ignoring Father's apology. "But now, you have fulfilled your part of pact. You will return to your kingdom." He didn't wait for a response. "Vladimir," Draven called out, turned his white horse and began to ride away, his long fur cape swaying behind him before he vanished into the falling snow. "Yes, Commander," one of the four warriors replied. He turned to me and said. "Enter the carriage, Princess." I hesitated, but before I could move, the warrior spoke again. "The Prince has been gracious enough to allow you to take two of your handmaidens with you to the North." A sudden wave of relief washed over my family. Mother gasped, her hands flying to her chest and even Father released a breath he had been holding. In the brutal world of the Dragons, letting a human bride keep a piece of her home was an incredible mercy. “Oh thank the Creator. Go, Lisa! Quickly!" Mother ordered, nudging my sister. "Go fetch Sarah and Mina!" Lisa didn't need to be told twice. She turned on her heel and rushed back into the palace as fast as her skirts would allow. A few minutes later, Lisa came running back out, panting with the girls trailing closely behind her, both carrying small bags with panicked expressions on their faces. “They’re here,” Lisa breathed. Mother immediately hugged me tightly, she couldn’t stop crying. “You must write to us,” she whispered shakily. “Do you understand me? Constantly.” I nodded quickly, blinking hard so the tears in my eyes wouldn't drop. “I will.” Father pulled me into his arms next. His embrace was tight and protective. “Survive,” he whispered against my hair. The word nearly shattered me. Then Lisa threw herself at me. “I hate this. I hate all of this.” I laughed weakly through the tightness in my throat. “I know.” Vladimir stepped toward the carriage. “It is time.” He opened the carriage door for us. Sarah and Mina climbed in first, their bodies shaking from the cold and I followed right behind them. Thankfully, inside of the carriage was made with thick furs, though it offered little comfort to the dread I felt in my chest. The door slammed shut with a thud. I pushed the curtain aside as tears finally slipped down my cheeks. Outside, the courtyard was moving away fast. Mother was sobbing openly against Father's chest as he held her tightly with one arm, using the other to wave at me. Lisa was running behind the carriage, her face red from crying. "We love you, Diana!" Mother’s broken voice echoed over the sound of the horses. "Write to us! Please, write to us!" "I will!" I shouted back, though the glass muffled my voice. "Send my love to Derrick! Tell him I love him and he'll make a perfect king!" I watched them until the stone gates of the Lycan palace closed behind us, cutting off the view of my family completely. The carriage plunged into the dark mountain forest. I sank back into the fur seats as my journey into the dark officially began. .................. The journey lasted through the entire night. At some point, exhaustion should have dragged me to sleep, but every time my eyes started to close, the cold pulled me awake again. The further we traveled from the Palace, the worse it became. Sarah and Mina wrapped themselves tightly in thick furs opposite me, their faces pale from the freezing air slipping endlessly through the carriage walls. Far ahead, I never saw Draven’s face. Only the dark fur cloak moving with the wind as he rode further ahead of everyone else. As dawn slowly began creeping in the sky, the carriage finally slowed and I straightened immediately. “We are approaching Volkar,” Vladimir’s voice called from outside. Massive gates appeared and my breath seized. The iron gates were designed with silver carvings of dragons and ancient symbols I didn’t recognize. As the gates opened and we entered the estate, it looked less like a palace and more like a fortress. Sarah sucked in a breath and hugged herself tighter with the furs. “Creator." Mina whispered shakily. Inside the gates, the estate stretched endlessly. First came trees covered in frost and not a single bird in view. Then the carriage continued forward and suddenly we started hearing groanings. Hundreds of warriors were training so violently on open fields. It was almost like they were at war. Some fought with swords, others with bare hands and some had shifted, fighting in their forms and breathing out fire. It was crazy. Mina looked horrified as she whispered, “It’s barely morning." As we continued, servants crossed the grounds quickly, carrying weapons and supplies. The carriage finally stopped in front of the main building. The palace was enormous. It was beautiful and yet terrifying. A moment later, the carriage door opened and Vladimir stood outside waiting. He bowed slightly when I stepped down. Sarah and Mina came out after me, staying close to my sides like frightened birds. I looked up at the building looming over us. Vladimir followed my gaze before speaking calmly. "Welcome to Volkar, Princess Diana." He removed his helmet, revealing a stern and battle hardened face with sharp wolf features and piercing grey eyes. "The home of Prince Draven."DIANAMy stomach dropped.Aeris watched realization begin to form on my face. "Notice anything?"I looked at the royal escorts again. Not a single scratch was on them, meanwhile Vladimir's men were covered in blood. Some were injured and one even had an arrow lodged in his shoulder.A cold chill crawled down my spine. "No." I whispered.Aeris didn't answer which somehow felt worse."The attackers knew the Skyblade Warriors would be escorting you." Vladimir finally spoke. His voice was cold as he did. "They sent over one hundred highly trained assassins."My breath seized in my lungs. One hundred? I had thought there were a very few dozens.Vladimir's expression darkened. "They hoped numbers would overwhelm us." His eyes swept across the battlefield. "They were wrong."I stared at him, then back at the royal guards. My heart began pounding. "You're implying..." I couldn't even finish the sentence.Aeris and Vladimir looked at me dead serious.I covered my mouth with my hand as a gasp
DIANA The further we traveled from Volkar, the less brutal the cold became. Inside the carriage, Sarah had fallen asleep with her head resting on Mina's shoulder. Mina herself looked like she was struggling to stay awake, blinking slowly as she stared out the window. I couldn't sleep. I sat by the window, watching endless forests pass by. The bracelet Aeris had given me rested warmly around my wrist and without realizing it, I kept touching it.I'd been feeling a strange uneasiness sometime after noon and I couldn't explain it. Vladimir and the escort rode ahead and behind us. Everything was peaceful, then a scream shattered the peace. Then the carriage jerked. Sarah woke up with a terrified gasp. "What was that?" Before anyone could answer, an arrow buried itself through the carriage wall just inches from Mina's face. She screamed immediately, throwing herself on the floorboards. "AMBUSH!" Vladimir roared from outside. The horses shrieked in panic as arrows continued to
DIANAAn entire month had passed since that strange night by the waterfall. One month since I had seen Draven. At first, I had expected him to appear the next day. Then the day after that. Then perhaps a week later. But he never came. When I finally asked Aeris where the prince was, the fae had simply smiled and informed me that His Highness had traveled on official business. That answer should have satisfied me. Instead, it only made the strange disappointment in my chest worsen."Princess."A wooden sword smacked my shoulder."Ow!" I jumped back, rubbing the affected area.Aeris stood opposite me with his own practice sword balanced lazily across one shoulder. His silver hair gleamed beneath the sunlight. "You were daydreaming again.""I was not.""You absolutely were.""I wasn't."He raised one eyebrow. "You have the worst liar's face I have ever seen."I glared at him, but he looked too pleased with himself. The training courtyard behind my wing had become my favorite place in Vo
DRAVEN “You cannot kill me, Your Highness.” The words hit me harder than any weapon ever has. “You speak with the ignorance of a child, Diana,” I rasped. I braced my boots against the stone, forcing myself to remain exactly where I stood. Every molecule in my body was screaming at me to cross the distance, to close the gap and claim what was mine. “I am a cursed creature,” I continued, the words coming out in a strained tone as I fought Karl for control. “My winter aura has frozen the blood in the veins of women stronger than you. If you step closer, your weak mortal body will fail you.” Diana didn't back away, instead, she lifted her chin higher. “Then why am I not cold?” she asked. “What?” I breathed, my composure fracturing further. “Growing up, I was taught that the North was a wasteland of ice and death,” she said, her voice remarkably clear over the sound of the rushing water. “But tonight, standing here right now, looking at you... I am not cold. The closer I get to yo
DIANA The silence of Volkar at night was almost suffocating. I stared up at the canopy of the bed, my eyes wide awake. I had slept through the entire day to make up for the grueling journey from the central palace, but now, my body was restless. I didn't know if I was restless because I wasn't sleepy anymore or because of the strange pull that had been tugging at my chest since my family and I arrived at the dragon kingdom. I closed my eyes, trying to force myself back to sleep, but the image from my dream flashed in my mind again. In the dream, I had been standing in a storm of snow, but I wasn't cold. A man had stepped out of the fog and stretched out his frosted hand to caress my cheek. I should have frozen at his touch. I should have screamed, but it didn't feel cold at all. Instead I felt a comforting heat spread through my skin. I had woken up immediately, touching my cheek and weirdly, it felt warm. Sighing, I pushed the covers off my body. “Creator,” I muttered under
DRAVEN "She is a human, Ariel," "Right," he muttered, rubbing the back of his neck as a sheepish look crossed his face. "I forgot. Humans don't have heats." "Exactly," I said, turning my gaze back to the window. "She doesn't have cycles driven by ancient magic. To her, this is just a forced marriage to a monster she has been raised to fear all her life. She probably feels the pull but has no idea what it actually is." I clenched my fists, watching the clouds gather over the mountains. "Her humanity is the only thing keeping us safe right now," I murmured. "As long as she stays ignorant, and as long as I keep my distance, she stays alive." Ariel released a frustrated sigh, running a hand through his hair again. "Draven, you're missing the point," He insisted, stopping to look at me. "I know she’s human. But the Creator made the mate bond for a reason. What if the bond changes things? What if it makes it impossible for your aura to kill her?" "Why would I test a theory when the pr
