Chapter 2

Author: Phonenix
Layla's POV

I didn't know how long had passed when Knox finally walked over to me.

He still had that same careless, cocky swagger—hands in his pockets, strolling over like he was just here to watch a good show.

Behind him trailed the Betas who'd helped with the "prank." And Mia.

She was wearing a white dress today, her hair flowing loose over her shoulders. She had her hand over her mouth, her face all fake surprise. "Oh my god, I was just saying I wanted to see an Omega frenzy—I can't believe you actually did it!"

The excitement she couldn't quite hide in her voice sent ice through my veins. So this was what my pain was to her. Entertainment.

"Of course we did," Knox said, puffing up with pride. "If Mia says she wants to see something, we make it happen."

The way he looked at her—so soft, so tender—was something I'd never seen from him before.

Then he strolled up to the stone and peered down at me, mocking.

The sunset light spilled across his face. Those features I knew so well—they looked like a stranger's now.

"So, Layla? Fun game today, right?"

He waved a hand, already over it. "Alright, alright. Game's over. Cut her down."

His voice was so casual, like he was commenting on the weather.

A few Betas fumbled with the silver chains, then practically tossed me aside like I was trash they didn't want to touch.

The second the chains came loose, I hit the ground hard. My back slammed against the stone, and I felt every bone in my body rattle.

But the silver was still pressed against my skin, still burning into me. I didn't have the strength to push it off.

The rage-inducer's side effects hadn't faded. My wolf couldn't heal my wounds. All I could do was curl up on the ground, shaking and whimpering in pain.

Knox loomed over me. He kicked the chains off my body, rough and careless, not giving a damn how much it hurt.

The silver scraped against my skin, peeling off a layer of flesh as it went. I jolted, a raw scream tearing out of my throat.

He froze when he saw my swollen, bloodshot eyes. When he saw the bruises covering my body. When he saw the rotting, mangled flesh around my wrists where the silver had eaten through.

For one second, I thought I saw something flicker across his face. Guilt. Regret.

Then it was gone, replaced by his usual cocky mask. "Why are you crying? It was just a joke. We've pranked each other before, haven't we?"

He said it so lightly, like it really was just another prank.

But no prank had ever left me covered in wounds. No prank had ever stripped me of my dignity in front of everyone.

I stared at him. Said nothing.

Knox shifted under my gaze, uncomfortable. "Why are you looking at me like that? I let you go, didn't I?"

"And besides—Mia said she'd never seen an Omega frenzy before. I asked a healer about that rage-inducer. It doesn't cause permanent damage. You're fine, right?"

Fine?

I looked down at myself. The rotting flesh. The body covered in saliva and god knows what else. My back throbbing. My bones shattered in a dozen places.

This was "fine"?

The Betas chimed in, piling on:

"Yeah, Layla, don't make this a big deal."

"You should be honored that Mia even wanted to see you."

"Honestly, without Knox vouching for you, no one would even look at you. You're just an Omega. Don't act like you're special."

Every word was a reminder.

I didn't deserve respect. I didn't deserve kindness. I only existed to entertain them.

Mia stepped forward, all fake guilt. "Layla, I'm so sorry. I had no idea they'd actually do it. I was just talking, I never meant for—"

Her eyes got all misty. She looked like she was on the verge of tears.

Like she was the victim here.

And of course, the Betas ate it up.

"Mia, don't blame yourself. This isn't your fault."

"Yeah, Layla's just too sensitive."

"Mia, you're so sweet. Worrying about some low-tier Omega."

I pushed myself up slowly, my whole body trembling with pain. I could barely stand.

"Knox," I said, my voice shaking. "You promised you'd protect me."

I looked at him, my fists clenched, holding onto one last shred of hope.

He seemed to flinch. He looked away.

"You're fine, aren't you? Nothing really happened."

I didn't say another word.

I gave him one last look.

Then I turned and walked away.

His voice followed me. "Hey, Layla! Where are you going? Come on, don't be like that. I'll buy you dinner to make up for it, okay? Layla! Stop walking!"

Knox started after me—but Mia grabbed his arm.

"Knox, I'm so sorry. It's all my fault. I made Layla mad at you."

He immediately turned to soothe her. "Mia, don't. You didn't do anything wrong. Layla's always like this. I'm used to it. She'll get over it in a few days."

I heard every word.

Tears rolled down my cheeks.

But I didn't look back.

And yeah, I'd "acted out" before.

Like when he changed my test answers to Mia's name and cost me the Outstanding Wolf Scholarship.

Like when he gave away the healing potion I'd fought so hard to get—to Mia, because she had a tiny scratch on her finger.

Meanwhile, I'd fallen down a slope and had no healing potion of my own, so I spent three months stuck in bed.

He'd called all of that "acting out."

Fine.

Then I'd stop acting out.

I straightened my spine. Stumbled, but kept walking. Left the camp behind.

When I was finally outside the training camp gates, I reached out through the mind-link, calling for my father.

"Dad," I said, my voice steady. "I want to come home to Healer's Hollow."

Layla's POVI turned my head and saw a group of people being held back by the guards outside the fence—a dozen or so, young and old, well-dressed but panicked, clutching bags and boxes of gifts in their hands. The guard announced, "Members of Crimson Pack, Wind Pack, and Stone Pack have come to apologize."My father glanced at me. I nodded. The guards stepped aside. The group practically stumbled through the gates. The one in the lead was a middle-aged female wolf draped in gold and jewels. The moment she saw me, she lunged forward and nearly dropped to her knees at my feet."Miss Graham! Miss Graham! We're here to apologize! My son posted those things on the forum—we punished him severely at home! He didn't know what he was doing—he was manipulated!"She yanked a cowering Beta out from behind her. His legs gave out as he dropped to his knees, too afraid to even lift his head. "Layla, I'm sorry... I shouldn't have... I shouldn't have joined in on the insults... Mia was the one stirring

Layla's POVOn the morning of the fourth day, I finally opened my eyes.Light streamed through the window, and I realized—I could feel everything. Every herb, every plant across the entire territory. The evening primrose on the eastern slope had just sprouted new shoots. The blood-clot flowers in the western valley were in full bloom. Even the wolf-spirit grass buried deep underground, not yet broken through the soil, trembled faintly at the edge of my awareness.I knew it then. My ability had finally awakened. My father pushed the door open just as I was standing at the window."Layla." His voice was tight.I turned. He was standing in the doorway, staring at me, his eyes already red. Then he smiled—proud, overwhelmed, barely holding it together."My daughter," he said, crossing the room and pulling me into his arms. "You've finally awakened."I pressed my face into his chest and let out a soft "Mm."That morning, my father gathered every elder and senior member of Healer's Hollow Pa

Layla's POVMy father was the Alpha of Healer's Hollow Pack. The day I came back, the entire Pack turned out to welcome me.He stood at the very front, eyes glistening with unshed tears. He opened his arms and pulled me into his chest."Welcome home."Those two simple words broke something inside me. All the hurt I'd been holding in for so long came crashing down.I buried my face in my father's warm chest, didn't say a word. Just let my shoulders shake. For the next three days, I barely left my room.My father sent over the potion the witch had brewed. Deep purple liquid swirled inside the glass vial, catching the light like captured starlight.I tipped it back and drank. The bitterness spread from my tongue all the way down to my stomach, then bloomed into warmth—slow, steady, flowing through every limb, every vein. Then I curled up on the bed and let the potion take effect. It worked just like my mother's necklace used to—steadying my wolf, quieting the turmoil inside me. Bit by bi

Knox's POV"Knox?" Mia's voice pulled me back. She was sitting right beside me, her arm looped through mine, her chest pressing against my bicep. Her Alpha pheromones were pouring out, thick and unsubtle, practically dripping with invitation. "What are you thinking about?"A wave of discomfort hit me. I pulled away and stood up fast.I walked to the door, pulled it open, and stepped aside. "You should go."This was mine and Layla's place. If she ever found out Mia had been here, she'd never forgive me. And I needed her to forgive me.Mia blinked. "What?""I said, go." My voice was flat. No emotion. She bit her lip, then slowly got up from the couch. When she passed me, she stopped, tilting her head up to look at me. "Knox, she's just an Omega. You're seriously going to throw everything away for—""Out."I shoved her out the door and closed it behind her. Then I stood in that empty living room for a long, long time. The sunset bled through the windows, painting the floor in warm gold. • The Day He Lost Me   Chapter 4

Knox's POVAfter I walked out of Layla's place, I handed the necklace to Mia. She barely looked at the pendant—just turned it over once, laughed, and said, "Honestly, it's kind of plain." Then she tossed it back.I shoved it into my pocket and took Mia to dinner. We strolled around the training camp afterward. Her fingers brushed against the back of my hand every now and then. She tilted her head up at me and smiled."Knox, thanks for today. Layla... she's really okay, right?""She's fine," I waved it off. "She'll get over it in a couple days."At midnight, my phone buzzed.I figured it was her. A text apologizing. That's how it always went—she'd hold out for a while, but she always cracked first. She'd come to me, voice small, eyes red, asking if I was still mad. And I'd let her off the hook because, well, she was Layla. She always came back. But this time, I opened the message and saw the words: "Knox. We're done. Forever."I stared at it for three full seconds. Then I snorted and t

Layla's POVWhen my father learned what had happened to me, he sent me a healing potion that even an Alpha King couldn't get his hands on.I downed it in one gulp.
