I gave Kasen Thorne my heart and built his multi-billion-dollar empire from the shadows. His reward? Handing me divorce papers so he could marry his fragile, manipulative mistress. He thought I was just his plain, obedient, charity-case wife. He thought I would cry and beg him to stay. He didn't know I was Maeva Sterling—the trillionaire heiress of the world's most powerful conglomerate. With a single phone call, I declined his credit cards, revoked his patents, and bankrupted his entire life's work. To avoid federal prison, the arrogant CEO who threw me away is forced to sign a new contract: becoming my personal assistant. Now, the man who broke my heart is forced to pour my coffee, carry my bags, and stand guard at my door while the world's most elite, dangerous billionaires line up to date me. Kasen is forced to watch other men kiss my hand. He is forced to stand in the shadows while I rule my empire. But as new enemies circle and foreign tycoons try to steal my crown, Kasen proves he is no longer the foolish boy who left me. He has become my ruthless, devoted guard dog. And he is willing to sacrifice everything—even his own life—to win his Queen back. He threw me away for nothing. So I bought his soul for one dollar.

Chapter 1

The Fifty-Million-Dollar Decline

"Fifty million dollars, going once."

The auctioneer's voice echoed through the grand ballroom of the Eden City Grand Hotel.

Maeva Thorne sat at Table One, her fingers tracing the stem of her untouched champagne glass. Across the room, her husband of three years, Kasen, stood with his bidding paddle raised high.

"Fifty million dollars, going twice," the auctioneer called, his eyes scanning the crowd of billionaires.

"Fifty million," Kasen's deep, commanding voice cut through the murmurs. He didn't look back at Maeva. His gaze was locked on the velvet-lined display case on the stage.

Inside sat the 'Tear of the Ocean'—a legendary, pear-cut blue diamond that caught every shard of light from the crystal chandeliers above.

The crowd held its breath. Fifty million dollars was a staggering sum, even for the CEO of the city's fastest-growing financial empire.

"Sold! To Mr. Kasen Thorne!"

The ballroom erupted into polite, rhythmic applause.

The wealthy matriarchs at Maeva's table turned to her, their eyes glittering with envy. "Three years of marriage, and he still buys you the world," one of them whispered, her smile not reaching her eyes. "You truly are a lucky woman, Maeva."

Maeva offered a polite, practiced nod.

For three years, she had played the role of the quiet, plain wife who stayed in the shadows while her husband conquered Eden City's financial market. She wore simple dresses, kept her head down, and let him take the spotlight.

She watched Kasen step onto the stage. He looked every bit the untouchable king—tall, broad-shouldered, with sharp, aristocratic features and dark eyes that rarely showed emotion.

"Thank you," Kasen said into the microphone, his voice smooth and steady. "But tonight, this diamond isn't for me. It is for a very special woman who has been my guiding light."

The applause swelled again. The crowd turned toward Maeva, expecting her to stand.

Maeva remained seated. Her eyes weren't on her husband. They were on the slender woman stepping out from the wings of the stage.

Liora.

She wore a fragile, pale pink gown that made her look small and delicate. Her face was flushed with soft emotion as she looked up at Kasen. Her eyes darted toward Maeva's table, a tiny, triumphant smirk flashing across her lips before vanishing behind a mask of tearful innocence.

"Liora," Kasen said, his tone softening in a way Maeva had not heard in years. "Please."

He picked up the heavy diamond necklace from the display case. Liora turned, lifting her soft blonde hair. With practiced gentleness, Kasen clasped the fifty-million-dollar necklace around her neck.

The ballroom fell silent.

Then, the whispers began. They spread like wildfire through the tables.

"Is that Liora? His childhood sweetheart?"

"Where is his wife? Isn't she sitting right there?"

"Oh, look at Maeva's face. How humiliating."

Pity and mockery pressed in from all sides. Maeva sat still. She didn't flinch. She didn't lower her head. Her face remained an unreadable mask of cold calm.

Kasen stepped off the stage, leaving Liora to bask in the flashing cameras of the press. He walked toward Table One.

The whispering intensified.

Kasen stopped in front of Maeva. His dark eyes were cold, devoid of any warmth or history they shared. He reached into his tailored tuxedo jacket, pulled out a thick manila envelope, and threw it onto her dinner plate.

The heavy packet landed with a dull thud, splashing a few drops of sauce onto the white tablecloth.

"Divorce papers," Kasen said. His voice wasn't a whisper. It was clear, carrying to the surrounding tables.

Maeva looked up at him, her expression unchanged. "Divorce?"

"Liora is pregnant," Kasen said coldly. "I'm giving her the family she deserves. I've attached a two-million-dollar severance package. It's more than enough for someone of your background. Sign it, take your things, and leave through the service exit. Don't make a scene."

A collective gasp rippled through the nearby tables, followed by suppressed laughter.

"Two million? She's getting off easy."

"The charity case is finally being thrown out."

"She was always too plain for him anyway."

Kasen stood over her, his jaw tight, his shoulders squared. He expected the tears. He expected her to beg, to scream, or to make a pathetic scene that would justify his disgust.

Instead, Maeva looked at the envelope. Then, she looked up at him.

A slow, terrifyingly calm smile curved her lips.

It wasn't the smile of a broken, abandoned housewife. It was a sharp, razor-thin smirk that made Kasen's chest tighten with a sudden chill.

She reached into her small, elegant clutch. She didn't pull out a tissue. She pulled out a sleek, matte-black pen.

Without saying a word, Maeva flipped to the last page of the contract, signed her name in a smooth, elegant script, and tossed the papers back onto the table.

She stood up.

Without her usual slumped posture, she seemed taller. The simple black dress she wore looked less like a cheap garment and more like a mourning shroud for the man standing before her.

She walked past Kasen.

"Maeva," he hissed, grabbing her arm. "I told you to leave quietly."

She didn't look at his hand. She shifted her arm, breaking his grip with a swift, practiced movement that left him stunned.

She walked up the steps of the stage.

The security guards moved to stop her, but she gave them a single, commanding look. The authority radiating from her made them freeze.

Maeva walked up to the auctioneer's podium, pushing the confused man aside. She grabbed the microphone.

The feedback screeched once, echoing through the silent ballroom. Every eye in the room was locked on her.

"Good evening, everyone," Maeva's voice was smooth, carrying a deep, resonant power that shattered her former plain persona. "First, let me offer my congratulations to my ex-husband, Kasen, on his new family."

In the back of the room, Kasen's face darkened with fury. "Get her off the stage," he growled to his assistants.

"However," Maeva continued, her voice cutting through the rising murmurs, "as the actual, sole owner of this auction house—and the entire block it stands on—I must inform you of a small technical issue."

She reached back into her clutch. This time, she didn't pull out a pen.

She pulled out a solid-black, limitless Centurion card, holding it up under the bright chandelier lights.

"Kasen, your company's primary credit line was secretly backed by my personal asset accounts," Maeva said, her eyes locking onto his across the crowded room. "Since we are now divorced, those accounts have just been unlinked."

She looked at the head of the financial processing table.

"Which means, your fifty-million-dollar transaction..." She smiled, her eyes as cold as ice. "...has just been declined."
