Lena's POV

"Take her back inside!" Alexei roared, his voice cracking with a sudden, sharp edge of panic. "Lock her in the basement room and don't let her out until I send for you! Move!"

The two guards who had been standing by the entrance lunged forward. I didn't make it easy for them. The moment their heavy hands grabbed my arms, I thrashed, kicking wildly and digging my heels into the floorboard.

"Let go of me!" I screamed, my voice raw as I foug

Nikolai's POV I stared at the broken man hanging from the ceiling, my expression an unreadable mask. His words echoed in the cold dampness of the cell, but a part of me refused to blindly accept it. Alexei setting up an ambush was believable, but the logistics, the sheer confidence of the attack, it still didn't add up. Regardless, the prisoner had served his purpose. He had nothing left to give me. Without a word, I flicked my wrist, spinning the cylinder one last time. I didn't bother placing the barrel against my own head again. If the next chamber had been loaded when I held it to my temple moments ago, I would have been dead on the floor right now. But I had no time to dwell on how close I had danced with death. I raised the revolver, aimed directly between the attacker's eyes, and pulled the trigger.

Nikolai's POV The moment our heads broke the surface, I surged upward, hauling Lena with me into the cold air. She was completely limp, a dead weight in my arms, her skin pale and clammy against the dark ocean water."Lena! Open your eyes! Lena.”I dragged her onto the narrow rocky shore beneath the concrete pillars of the highway bridge. Laying her flat on her back, I immediately dropped to my knees beside her. Her pulse was faint, erratic under my fingertips. I didn't hesitate. I tilted her head back, cleared her airway, and locked my hands over the center of her chest, driving rhythmic compressions into her sternum before leaning down to force air into her lungs."Don't you dare," I growled between breaths, my heart hammering against my ribs with a terror I had never felt in my entire life. "Do not do this to me, Lena. Breathe!"After three agonizing cycles, her body suddenly violently convulsed. She turned he

Lena's POV The world went into an absolute tailspin as the bike hit the pavement, metal scraping violently against the asphalt. Instinct took over before my brain could process the danger. I slammed my boots down, fighting the momentum with every ounce of strength in my arms, wrestling the thrashing handlebars until I somehow managed to keep us from flipping over entirely.Behind me, Nikolai was already moving. He yanked his phone from his coat, his voice a bark of pure, ice-cold command into the receiver. "We’re hit on the coastal highway! Intercept the tailing vehicles now, do not let them close the gap!"He jammed the phone away, his hands instantly locking back around my waist. "Drop the bike, Lena! Let me take the controls!""No!" I shouted back through the rushing wind, my teeth gritted as I forced the limping, damaged bike back into a straight line. "I know how to handle a blown tire on a heavy frame! I’m faster th

Lena's POV He let out a nervous, breathless laugh, staring at the matte-black machine like it was a wild animal waiting to tear him apart."My trust isn't the issue here, Lena," he said, trying desperately to regain his usual composure, though his eyes darted nervously between me and the handlebars. "I'm not even sure you're strong enough to handle a bike like this. You were injured just recently. Your body needs rest, not... this."I couldn't help the loud, clear laugh that bubbled up from my chest. "I'm completely healed, Nikolai! Nothing is wrong with me, so stop making pathetic excuses just to avoid getting on." I revved the engine, the aggressive purr vibrating through the garage floor. "Get on. Unless the big, bad Mafia king is scared of a ride?"He grumbled something under his breath in dark Russian, but my taunt clearly hit his pride. Resigned, he pulled the second helmet over his head and carefully swung his long legs over

Lena's POV I stared at him for a long moment, the heavy silence hanging between us like an insurmountable wall. "I'm just disappointed, Nikolai," I whispered softly.Without waiting for his response, I pulled away from his gentle grip, walked over to the bed, and climbed under the covers. I turned my back to him, staring blindly into the darkness. He stood by the bed for what felt like an eternity before I heard his soft footsteps retreat toward his room. I closed my eyes, letting sleep claim me, desperate to escape the bitter taste of broken expectations. The next morning, I woke up alone. My heart felt heavy, lingering on the memory of last night's fight, but I took a deep breath and forced myself out of bed. I refused to let his shortcomings ruin a fresh day. I showered, dressed in a comfortable pair of jeans and a casual top, and headed downstairs.I fully expected the house to be empty, assuming Nikolai had already left for wo

Lena's POV "I want us to go on a movie date," I said, leaning back into his chest, my voice bright with an enthusiasm I hadn't felt in years. "Then we can have dinner, and after that, take a slow walk through the park to enjoy the evening breeze." Nikolai didn't look over the moon. His jaw tightened slightly, and his dark eyes swept toward the balcony as if calculating the tactical risks of every single activity I had just named. But he looked down at me, saw the rare spark of hope in my eyes, and gave a slow nod. "Alright. If that is what you want." I was over the moon. The moment he agreed, I practically floated back into the bedroom to get changed. As I picked out a dark green dress and styled my hair, my mind ran wild with possibilities. I imagined us sitting in the dark theater, his arm around me, sharing popcorn, laughing over dinner, and talking about things that had
