Chapter 3

Autor: Canal
The smile on Theo’s face faded. “Just because of a bangle? Lydia, when did you become so calculative?”

“That’s right, it’s just a bangle!” Eleanor said as she frantically tried to take it off. “Lydia, don’t be angry. I’ll take it off now. You can’t ruin your nine-year relationship because of me.”

She was rushing, so the bangle left a red mark on her wrist. She started tearing up.

Theo grabbed her hand. “Why are you taking it off? You didn’t do anything wrong. Eleanor’s still sick. Why are you humiliating her in public?”

I could no longer stay there. I turned around and ran out.

I heard everyone gossiping in the room.

“This young lady has quite a bit of a temper.”

“That’s right. It’s normal for men to have other lovers. She should just look the other way sometimes.”

Eleanor said worriedly, “Theo, you should chase after her. Lydia’s angry now, I’m worried something might happen to her.”

Theo snorted. “I’ve been with her for nine years. She’s thirty now. Aside from me, who would want that old witch?”

He then said loudly, “If someone is trying to play hard to get, then I have no choice but to delay the wedding.”

The bridal shop keeper sent me a photo of the wedding gown to reconfirm my order with me.

[Ms. Scott, we won’t be able to refund your deposit. You’ve come here so many times, are you sure you don’t want it anymore?]

I stared at the phone screen for a very long time. I had tried around seventeen different wedding gowns there.

Every time I sent a photo to Theo, he would only answer coldly that he was busy, leaving the decision up to me.

It turned out that one person’s hope was not enough to support a shared future between two people.

[I don’t want it anymore.]

The next day, I went to the office. There was a transfer notice on my desk.

[Because of your poor performance, you’ve been transferred to the administration department.]

Immediately after, the company announced that Eleanor had been promoted to a department head position via a company-wide email.

The proposal that I spent seven late nights on and went through fifteen versions of had become Eleanor’s work.

I scrolled to the bottom of the document. Theo was the one who approved the proposal.

I called Theo.

“I guess that you’ve seen the notice. I’m just about to look for you.”

“Theo, why is Eleanor’s name on the proposal?”

He chuckled. “Yesterday, when you humiliated Eleanor at my grandmother’s birthday dinner, she cried the entire night. I gave her this proposal to comfort her and to teach you a lesson.”

I heard Eleanor’s sobs through the phone. “Lydia, if you’re not happy about it, I can give you the position of department head.”

Theo interrupted her. “Why would you do that? This is what she deserves. Lydia, as long as you listen to me and apologize to Eleanor, the wedding will not be called off. I’ll promote you in the next cycle.”

I found this whole incident ridiculous. He had stolen my work just to cheer Eleanor up.

I said, “Alright.”

After I ended the call, I handed in my resignation letter. At the same time, I accepted an overseas offer.

  • The Dust-Covered Empty Seat   Chapter 11

I had a habit. No matter what I did, I would always save an empty seat next to me. I once stubbornly believed that Theo would appear one day and fill that spot. After three years of a long-distance relationship, I had gone through a lot while I kept that empty seat. I had countless nights when I was ill, I had to deal with my own grief after my mother passed, and all my hope was drained. He had spent all his time and effort on another person. He went as far as personally making my chicken noodle soup for another woman. He made me realize that he could come to fill that empty seat, but he just did not want to. When he regretted it, the seat was gone. After Theo returned to the country, he purchased the apartment that I had rented in South City. He kept it exactly like it was when I stayed there. The gray toothbrush that I had thrown away was placed on the sink again by him. Every night, he would sit on the couch and swallow my expired stomach flu pills. The pills i

He extended his hand that was not burned and tried to hold my arm. I took a step back and dodged his attempt. “Mr. Anderson, please behave yourself.” My voice was colder than the rain. “Lydia, I know I was wrong.” He took out a black velvet box from the pocket of his coat. “I’ve sold that house, and I’ve gotten rid of Eleanor. I’ve sold all my shares, and I don’t want anything else.”He opened the box and revealed a beautiful diamond ring on the inside. “Please give me a chance. Let me make it up to you for the past three years, alright?” “Theo, do you really think that we can start over again?”I looked at that diamond ring. Three years ago, I stood outside of the jewelry shop and stared at it for a really long time. He was standing there impatiently as he replied to Eleanor’s text messages. “Don’t look at it anymore. These sparkly things are a waste of money.” I looked up and stared indifferently at him. “Have you been looking into my medical records?”His face i

  • The Dust-Covered Empty Seat   Chapter 9

I tapped on the photo. In one of the photos, Theo was wearing a crumpled shirt as he stood in a messy kitchen. Pieces of a shattered pot were scattered across the floor. There was chicken noodle soup splattered all over the kitchen and a huge blister on the back of his hand. The wound looked terrifying. In another photo, he was sitting in a watch shop. [The watch you gave Mr. Anderson was no longer working, so he brought it to a shop to fix it.][The shopkeeper told him that it was a limited-edition watch that’s no longer in production, so he couldn’t purchase any parts.][He also looked into your purchase history and noticed that you had pawned the gold necklace that your mother had left you to buy this watch.]When I read the email, I felt nothing. The watch was no longer working, and he had spilled chicken noodle soup all over the floor. It seemed like he had finally realized what he had lost. Immediately after, I received another email. [Lydia, Mr. Anderson went to t

Eleanor called me three days later. “Lydia, it’s me! Don’t hang up!”Eleanor’s voice was extremely hushed, and she sounded really frantic. “Shoot.”“Lydia, I beg you. Please send me the data model for your proposal! The client is pulling the plug and saying that there is something seriously wrong with the model. “They want to sue me for fraud, and the company is going to fire me… I’m really at my wit’s end. Lydia, please save me!” I took a sip of my coffee. I had spent seven nights writing that proposal. All of the logic and rationale were in my brain. She had thought that putting her name on the proposal would make it hers. She should not have coveted things that did not belong to her. “That’s your proposal, Eleanor.” I sounded calm and unflustered. “Since you’ve put your name on it, you have to be responsible for it.” She screeched, “How can I do that? I have to pay a few million dollars. I’ll die!” “Now you’re terrified. Why weren’t you afraid in the past?”El

  • The Dust-Covered Empty Seat   Chapter 7

I had rented an apartment with a balcony in the new city. There was a bakery downstairs, and every morning I woke up to the smell of butter. Two months had passed since I left South City.I switched to a new number and threw my old broken SIM card in the airport’s trash can. It was as if I had completely reset my life. It was so peaceful and calm. Xander would update me about the news back in South City through scheduled emails. [Ms. Scott, they’ve already refunded the one million dollars to you.][Besides, Theo has personally deposited two million dollars into your bank account with a reference note: compensation.]Someone rang my doorbell. The doorman wheeled a huge dustproof storage box into my apartment. “Ms. Scott, you’ve received an urgent delivery from South City. The postage fee is terribly high.”I sliced through the tape, and inside the box was the seventeenth wedding gown that I had tried on. There was a handwritten card placed on top of the gown. It was

  • The Dust-Covered Empty Seat   Chapter 6

It was the first time in three years that Theo stepped into my rental apartment in South City. He punched my birthday in as the passcode and opened the door. The shoe cabinet was empty, and the pair of gray slippers that I had shown him numerous times via video call were gone too. He walked into the bathroom and fixed his gaze on the sink. There was nothing but a single pink mug there. In the trash can, there was an unopened gray toothbrush. There was also a mug with his initials printed on it. I had prepared all these items for when he finally returned. I always said that if he decided to come back one day, there would be a place for him. Theo felt his throat tighten. He opened the bedroom door. On the bedside table, there was a photo of us that we took nine years ago. It was lying face down on the table. Theo walked over and picked up the photo frame. “Lydia…”He called out my name in the empty room before taking out his phone. [I’m sorry, the number you’re dia
