Chapter 3

作者: Smiling Eyes
Sean’s face burned with embarrassment.

His phone rang. The caller ID was “Miss Baum (Client).”

I reached over and put the call on speaker.

Sean could not stop me on time.

Monique’s voice came through loud and clear.

“Sean, are you done with the performance? Did she cry?”

The surrounding chatter fell silent. Disdainful eyes swept over Sean.

His face darkened. “Shut up!” he growled.

Monique chuckled. “Don’t be like that. I made you some soup, so come home soon.”

I ended the call and handed the phone back to him.

“Your client certainly knows how to take care of you.”

Sean grabbed me and dragged me outside.

“Happy now?”

He shoved me up against the car.

“Zoe, what the hell are you trying to do?”

“Wasn’t it exhausting, Sean? Pretending to be broke for five years? You and Monique spent five years playing your little game, calling it a test of my love. Did you enjoy making a fool out of me?”

“Zoe, since you’ve found out, there’s no point in hiding it anymore. How much do you want?”

I clutched my chest. The pain was so intense that I could barely breathe.

I remembered the day my parents sold their house. Sean had stood before them with tears in his eyes.

“Mr. and Mrs. Evry, I swear I’ll treat Zoe right for the rest of our lives.”

My mother pressed the check into his hand.

“We can rent another place. What matters now is helping you get through this.”

His hands trembled as he took it. His eyes were red with tears.

Today, he was asking me how much money it would take to make me go away.

He stepped closer and lowered his voice. “Zoe, I don’t want this to end badly. I know I’ve wronged you, but I can’t force myself to love you anymore. I’ll pay back the money from the house over time.”

“How long?”

The question caught Sean completely off guard. There was disbelief written all over his face.

“What?”

“I asked how long it’ll take you to pay me back.”

“Don’t push me.”

“Do you always raise your voice when someone asks you to repay a debt?”

His expression turned livid.

“You were never this mean before.”

I lifted the bouquet of white roses off the hood and tossed it into a trash can.

Sean flinched.

I turned and walked away. He called after me, “Zoe, if you walk away now, we’re really over.”

I looked back. Hope flickered in his eyes.

I pulled our photo out of my purse and tore it in half. Then, I tossed the half with his face into the trash.

Sean did not come back to our apartment that night.

He sent me more than a dozen messages.

They went from anger to apologies, then declarations of love, and finally desperate pleas. I did not reply to any.

At 8 p.m., Monique knocked on my door.

She smirked as she said, “Zoe, you really scared Sean today. You might not care if you make a fool of yourself, but he does.”

“How exactly did I make a fool of myself?”

“You wasted five years on a man, lost a house and a baby in the process, and after all that, he still wouldn’t marry you.”

I snorted. “Are you really going to sink this low?”

Monique lost her composure. “He doesn’t love you anymore, Zoe, but you still won’t let him go. Have you no self-respect?”

As I looked at the spite on her face, the tearful little girl I remembered faded further and further away.

“Monique, in the ten years we’ve been friends, have I ever done anything to hurt you?

“When your ex threw you out, and you had nowhere to go, I took you in and covered all the bills. When you said you needed new clothes for job interviews, I gave you half my paycheck.

“I never expected your gratitude, but did you really have to repay my kindness by sleeping with my fiance?”

Monique’s face went pale. She forced herself to hold her ground and said through gritted teeth, “So? If you love someone, you fight for them. Sean and I are in love. You’re the one who refused to let him go!”

“Was it your idea to pretend to be broke? How long have you been sneaking around behind my back?”

“It’s your own fault for being stupid enough to believe everything we told you!”

A month later, Monique called into Jonah’s livestream too.She used a different account, but I recognized her voice the moment she spoke.Sobbing, she asked, “Mr. Lutz, if a man tricked me into becoming the other woman and then tried to pin everything on me, can I sue him?”Jonah’s tone remained neutral. “Tell me what happened.”“I didn’t know he was still with his fiancee,” Monique said through tears. The comments immediately began rolling in.[That voice sounds familiar.][Isn’t that “the Voice of Reason?”][You’re back again?]Monique panicked. “I’m not the person you think I am.”Then, she ended the call. Not long afterward, Sean’s company issued an official statement.Sean had stepped down from his management position.Andrew’s studio was suspended for rectification. The day the second payment came through, I took my parents out for beef fondue. My mother placed a piece of beef on my plate. “Eat.”Dad placed his card in front of me. “Take this money.”I pushed it

Monique appeared in court on the day of the hearing. Her attorney argued, “Ms. Baum didn’t personally benefit from any of the money at issue.”Jonah pulled up delivery records, rent payments, and bank statements tracing the down payment on her apartment. “Part of the down payment on Ms. Baum’s new apartment came from an account belonging to Mr. Loker. “Within three days of receiving $1,200,000 from Ms. Evry’s parents, those funds were moved into an investment account, divided into smaller amounts, and transferred into the account Ms. Baum used to purchase the apartment.”Monique looked up sharply. “I didn’t know!”Sean snorted. “You didn’t know? That didn’t stop you from signing the purchase agreement.”The judge struck the gavel.“Order!”Monique burst into tears. “He approached me! He said Zoe refused to let him go! He said he never wanted that baby!”Sean shot to his feet.“Shut up, Monique!”It was my turn to speak. I rose to my feet.“Sean and I were together for

“He’s still young.”I offered a bitter smile. “My baby was even younger.”Sean went pale and finally lowered his head. “Zoe, I’m sorry for what I put you through when you lost the baby.”I looked at the watch on his wrist.“Take it off.”He stared at me.“What?”“The watch.”He unfastened it and placed it on the table.I picked it up. Two initials were engraved on the back.SZ.He had told me they stood for Sean and Zoe.In a screenshot from Monique’s livestream, I had seen a conversation between them about that same watch.Monique had asked, “Why do you still wear the watch she gave you?”Sean had said, “Because if I stop wearing it, she’ll get suspicious. Let her keep believing it still means something to me.”I slid the watch toward Jonah. “This corroborates the messages. Monique knew he was deceiving me and helped him keep up the act.”Sean looked up sharply. “You saw those messages too?”Monique’s attorney suddenly said, “Mr. Loker, Ms. Baum has submitted a statem

At 7 p.m., Sally Moor at reception sent me a message.[Zoe, there’s a woman here claiming to be your best friend. She looks pretty aggressive.]I went down to the conference room on the first floor. Monique’s eyes were red and swollen. She rose the moment I walked in.“Why are you trying to ruin my life?”I closed the door and started recording. “After you sent that demand letter to Sean’s company, his parents began pressuring me to get an abortion! They demanded that Sean leave me! “Zoe, you used to be so softhearted. You could never bear to put anyone in a difficult position. Even when we split the check, you worried about embarrassing me.”I looked at her. “That’s exactly why you thought you could walk all over me.”She clenched her jaw. “Sean doesn’t love you! Being with you made him miserable every day! He never even wanted that baby that you lost!”Footsteps stopped outside the conference room. She raised her voice. “Do you know where he was that night?”“When you we

I returned to the apartment my parents were renting.Mom opened the door and froze when she saw me.“Are you and Sean married?”I pulled up the recording on my tablet and played it for them from beginning to end.By the end of the recording, Mom’s face had turned pale. She gripped the edge of the table for support.Dad snatched up the remote and hurled it to the floor.“That trash!”Mom looked at me. “Zoe, when you lost the baby, was he already cheating on you?”I did not answer. My silence was the answer.Dad turned and went into the bedroom. He returned with a wooden box. Inside was a promissory note written by Sean.It was dated the day my parents sold their house.I stared at it. “You made him sign a promissory note?”Dad handed me the paper. “He refused at first. I told him matters of money should be clear, even among family. He accused me of not trusting him. Your mother cried, but I made him sign it anyway.”Sean’s handwriting was steady and precise.[I hereby ack

With every document he opened, Jonah Lutz’s expression grew grimmer. When he finished the last one, he looked at me. “He took money from you and your parents under the pretense that he was bankrupt. “If we can prove he lied about what the money was used for, we can demand that he return it.”“What about the fake appointment?” “They fabricated a webpage to make you believe the wedding was going ahead, and you made financial and personal decisions based on that deception. “We can pursue damages for fraud. The one who helped create it may also be liable.”I pulled up a screen recording of one of the questions Monique had asked during the legal livestream. She had asked, “If a man’s fiancee sells her home to pay off his debts, but he actually uses the money for investments and to buy me a house, can she make him pay it back?”Jonah glanced at me. “This could be the evidence we need.”I opened the screenshot of Monique’s social media post from that morning. There was a photo of
