Chapter 3

Author: Set Sail
"I'm not here to argue." Marissa set the flowers on the bedside table and rubbed her hands together awkwardly. "There's actually something I wanted to discuss with you.

"Well… Chloe took your car out the other day and got into an accident with a Porsche. Nobody was hurt, but… she doesn't have a driver's license."

I closed my eyes briefly. "And?"

"The traffic police said driving without a license could mean detention. Since the car is registered in your name, could you go down to the station and tell them you were the one driving?"

"Marissa." I cut her off. "You're asking me—a concussion patient lying in a hospital bed—to go to the police station and claim I was driving?"

"Dad, she's my future child's aunt! If she gets arrested, Tyler will never forgive me!"

I looked at the person standing in front of me.

Twenty-eight years ago, Diane had spent sixteen hours in labor bringing her into this world. After Diane passed away, I built my business and raised Marissa single-handedly. The sacrifices I made for her were things she would never truly understand.

Now she was standing beside my hospital bed, asking me to take the fall for an outsider who had stolen my car.

I raised my hand and slapped her. The sound cracked through the room.

"Get out."

Marissa covered her face, not saying another word.

As she turned to leave, she knocked the cheap bouquet onto the floor and then stepped on it.

That night, at nine o'clock, the hospital room door opened again. This time, it wasn't one person. It was an entire group.

Tyler walked in first.

Behind him came Linda, Linda's sister, Deborah Mercer, and my wonderful daughter, Marissa.

Tyler carried a large manila envelope in his hand. He walked over to my bed, opened it, and slapped a document down onto my blanket.

"Property Transfer Agreement"

Recipient: Marissa Langford.

Property: Penthouse Apartment, Emerald Bay Residences, East End.

Estimated Market Value: $12 million.

"Mr. Gerald Langford." Tyler used my full name. "You don't need to worry about Chloe's situation anymore. I'll take care of the police myself.

"But this apartment? You need to transfer it to Marissa.

"Consider it compensation for the months of abuse you've put me through: the insults, the hitting, and the emotional trauma."

Linda immediately chimed in from the side, her voice sharp enough to cut glass, "Exactly! What kind of father-in-law treats his son-in-law like this?"

Marissa stood at the back of the room holding a pen. She stepped forward and placed it beside my hand. "Dad, just sign it. If you do, we'll still be family."

"If you don't, then pretend you never had a daughter. And if you die in this hospital, don't expect anyone to collect your body."

I'd prepared myself for this, or at least I'd thought I had. But when the moment truly came, the hand holding that pen still trembled.

"Marissa, are you really willing to push your own father this far for the sake of a man?"

She turned her head away and muttered, "When you froze my cards, you didn't seem to think of me as your daughter either."

Tyler tapped impatiently against the bed rail. "So? Are you signing or not? If not, we're leaving. Nobody's forcing you."

I lowered my eyes. "Fine. I'll sign."

The pen touched the paper. My hand shook so badly that the signature came out crooked and uneven.

But I wrote every letter clearly: Gerald Langford.

Tyler snatched the agreement away and glanced over it. "Let's go. We need to get this notarized."

Linda practically glowed with excitement as she dragged Tyler toward the door.

Marissa followed behind them. "See? Things work out when you're reasonable."

Then she left.

The door closed.

Their footsteps and laughter gradually faded down the hallway.

I reached beneath my pillow and pulled out the voice recorder.

Everything they'd said since that afternoon—Marissa's, Tyler's, and Linda's words…

Every single sentence had been recorded.

I pressed stop. Then I picked up my phone and sent a message to Victor.

"Victor, regarding the Emerald Bay apartment... when will the paperwork for the bridge loan secured against the property become official?"

His reply came instantly. "The paperwork is complete.

"As soon as the transfer goes through, the debt transfers with the property. The recipient assumes joint liability automatically."

I put down my phone and looked at the pen they'd left behind on the bedside table.

They wanted my apartment?

Fine.

Then they could take the $50 million of debt that came with it, too.

Marissa stood beneath the billboard, staring up at it for a long time. Then, slowly, she crouched down, buried her face in her hands, and began to cry.Pedestrians walked around her. No one stopped to ask what was wrong.Just like when I'd been lying alone in that hospital bed, and not a single person had come to see me.Three months later, it was early winter. A heavy rainstorm rolled through the city that night.I'd just finished attending a chamber of commerce gala and was walking out of the hotel lobby. My driver had already pulled the car around. A black Maybach sat quietly in the rain. I opened my umbrella and stepped toward the car. Then a figure lunged out from the darkness. She threw herself onto the hood before sliding down and collapsing to her knees in a puddle. It was Marissa.I almost didn't recognize her. She'd lost at least thirty pounds. Her cheekbones jutted sharply from her face. Her eyes were sunken. Her clothes were covered in dried cement stains and carri

Tyler spun around and pointed a finger straight at Marissa."This is all your fault! Every bit of it! You're useless! If you hadn't insisted on marrying me, do you think I'd be in this mess?"Marissa finally broke too. She lunged across the courtroom from the defense table. The two of them crashed into each other and started fighting right there in front of the judge.Court officers rushed forward. It took nearly two full minutes to pull them apart.Tyler's faded sweatshirt had been ripped down the sleeve.Fresh red marks lined Marissa's face. The courtroom had descended into complete chaos.I remained seated at the plaintiff's table without moving an inch. After order was finally restored, the judge turned toward me. "Would the plaintiff be willing to consider mediation?"I stood. "Your Honor, I reject any form of settlement. I ask that the law be applied to its fullest extent."As we left the courthouse, Victor walked beside me. "Mr. Langford, regarding Marissa… Should we

The police called me.I told them I wasn't interested in seeing her.The next day, Linda arrived at my estate with Chloe hobbling beside her on crutches.Yes.An estate. The room in Riverside Commons had only been part of the show.My real home was a standalone estate halfway up the slopes of Crestview Heights, complete with its own garden. Linda clung to the iron gates and wailed, "Mr. Langford! Please! Have mercy on Tyler! He's still young! He just didn't know any better!"If you send my son to prison, your daughter will become a widow!"The security guards stopped them from entering.I stood on the second-floor balcony and asked my butler to bring down the documents I'd prepared in advance.A lawyer's letter.Repair costs for Chloe's accident while driving without a license: $320,000.Rent owed for the Ashfords' illegal occupation of my home: $460,000.Compensation for damage to my personal property, including clothing, liquor, furniture, and emotional damages for the

The moment the elevator doors opened, the entire lobby fell silent.Every eye turned toward me.I was wearing a tailored charcoal suit, my hair neatly combed back without a strand out of place. Step by step, I walked toward her.Marissa looked up at me, her eyes filled with desperation."Dad..."I stopped in front of her and looked down at her for two full seconds. Then I reached into my briefcase, pulled out a flash drive, and handed it to my assistant, Simon Reeves."Put it on the screen."The giant LED display in the lobby lit up. The footage came from the pawn shop's surveillance cameras. The timestamp was unmistakable. 2:00 a.m. last month. On the screen, Marissa slipped nervously into the pawn shop and pulled Diane's Rolex from her pocket. The engraving on the back of the watch was clearly visible beneath the camera."To my husband. Every day with you was a gift."She slapped the watch onto the counter. "How much if I sell it?"A wave of shocked gasps rippled through

"Tyler, just divorce her already. What kind of future could she possibly have now?"Marissa looked at Tyler with reddened eyes. "We're husband and wife. Can't we get through this together?"For a moment, Tyler didn't respond. Then Chloe laughed. "Husband and wife? Tyler told me he never even liked you. He married you for your father's money and your father's apartment. And you actually thought you mattered?"Marissa collapsed onto the couch and stared at Tyler. "None of it was real? It was all fake?"Tyler didn't deny it or explain himself.Instead, he picked up his phone and made a call."Hey, babe. Something came up over here. Can you come pick me up?" After hanging up, he started packing his bags.Marissa grabbed his wrist. "Who did you just call?""What business is it of yours?" Tyler shook her off. "Marissa, this is where we end. Handle the debt situation yourself. And don't drag me down with you."I married you for your father's money. Now that the money's gone, what ex

"This apartment is worth $12 million, paid for in full, and it's in my name. My father-in-law signed the transfer papers himself. He gave it to me willingly."Tyler's friends erupted into exaggerated cheers and jealous whistles. At 7:43 p.m., the front door exploded inward.Twelve men in black T-shirts marched into the apartment one after another. The man with the buzz cut leading them, Marcus Reed, kicked over the champagne tower with a single swing of his boot. Champagne splashed across the floor."Which one of you is Tyler Ashford?"The room fell silent.Tyler froze for three full seconds before finally shouting, "Who the hell are you people? This is my house! I'm calling the cops!"Marcus slapped a loan agreement and mortgage registration document against Tyler's chest."You're the legal owner of this property now, correct? This apartment was used as collateral for a $50-million bridge loan."The previous debtor, Gerald Langford, transferred ownership of the property. Acc
