Chapter 3

Author: Washing Wheat
I was no longer able to suppress my anger.

“My reputation will be ruined?” I chuckled. It was strangely loud in the silent carriage. “Griffin, you think far too highly of yourself. My reputation is none of your concern. You’re a coward who hides behind a woman.”

Griffin’s expression darkened drastically. He was instantly enraged.

“What did you just call me?”

As a celebrated warrior, he was being publicly called a coward by his betrothed. That hurt him even more than death itself.

“Griffin, please don’t be angry...”

Without me noticing, Joan had already approached us. She stumbled before throwing herself into Griffin’s arms. She held the infant in one hand and held onto his sleeve with the other.

“Her Grace was just angry. She didn’t mean it. It’s all my fault! I’ll leave right away. I won’t make things hard for you, Griffin.”

Even though she said she would leave, her feet remained rooted in place. Her tearful eyes were filled with both grievance and reluctance.

As expected, the moment Griffin saw how pitiful she looked, he flew into a blind rage.

“Isolde, don’t push your luck!”

He did not even bother calling me by my honorific title anymore. He called me by my name directly.

“For me to marry you is more honor than you deserve. Do you really think that you’re still that little princess the late king coddled? The new king has taken the throne. You’re nothing but an orphan, just the ghost of a dead reign. You have a title and nothing more.”

Everyone present gasped and fell into dead silence. No one had expected Griffin to speak the unsaid truth so publicly. Wilma, standing nearby, did not stop him. Instead, she revealed a satisfied, cold smile.

Clearly, she was also thinking the same thing.

To them, I had lost my patron and my power. I could only let the Quenell family do whatever they wanted with me.

“Griffin is right,” said Wilma.

She struck the ground with her cane again and continued smugly, “Your Grace, I advise you to see things as they are. Once you’re part of the Quenell family, you’ll have to obey my household’s rules. As for Joan, you will accept her whether you want to or not.”

The moment she said that, the Quenell household guards took a synchronized step forward. The scrape of steel leaving scabbards cut sharply through the air. Those several hundred soldiers in heavy armor surrounded my carriage.

It was clear that I could not leave unless I agreed to the marriage.

The scar-faced lieutenant and the other soldiers that Griffin led fixed the coachman with a menacing glare.

Nothing but a slight move from the coachman would trigger their swords.

“Your Grace, please step down from the carriage.”

Griffin smoothed his wedding tunic that Joan had wrinkled and stood tall again in his lofty, condescending posture.

“It’s getting late. Don’t keep the guests waiting.”

The atmosphere was heavy with pressure. The household guards of the Quenell family completely blocked my path. The coachman trembled with fear. He gripped his whip tightly in his hands. He did not even dare to breathe loudly.

This was Cathor’s great noble house. This was the so-called worthy man whom my late father, the king, had chosen after seeing a thousand potential grooms for me.

I looked at those bright, gleaming blades outside the carriage window.

It was an absurd scene.

“Griffin,” I said in a clear and calm voice, “Do you truly believe that a few hundred household guards can hold me prisoner?”

Griffin frowned. He seemed annoyed that I still spoke boldly, given my dire situation.

“Your Grace, I am doing this for your own good.”

He sighed and pretended to be reasonable.

Griffin had fallen into ruin and disgrace, abandoned by all who once stood by him. Did he have it coming, too?“Griffin, enjoy what little time you have left.”I looked at him, wretched as he was. I no longer felt anything for him.“At noon tomorrow, the Quenell family will be banished to Lingnarth. As for you, you will stay in this cell and slowly pay for your crimes.”I turned away and did not spare him another glance as I made my way toward the exit.“Isolde! Isolde, don’t leave!” I could hear Griffin’s heart-wrenching cries coming from behind me.“I’m sorry, I’m truly sorry! Please, give me one more chance! I just want to stay by your side, even if it means working as your servant. I will do anything!” The iron chains rattled loudly as he strained against them. His desperate pleas sounded like the final wail of a trapped beast. But I did not stop walking. In this world, there were no second chances. Some mistakes could never be undone.I stepped out of the dungeon.

“Griffin, have you looked at yourself in a mirror?”I stood on the dry ground as I looked down coldly at him. He was soaking in filthy water.“You look worse than one of my hounds right now. Why would I want you?”The hope in Griffin’s eyes vanished. He coughed up blood violently.“Isolde, why are you so cruel...? I fought for Cathor. I won battles for you. How can you be so cruel to me?”“Won battles?” I looked at him as if he were a fool. “Griffin, do you truly believe that you were invincible on the border?“You would not have survived if Jasper had not secretly sent you food and supplies. He cleaned up every disaster you left behind. With your poor skill at warfare, you would have died in the northern wastes long ago.”Griffin’s eyes widened in shock. He looked at Jasper behind me in utter disbelief. Jasper crossed his arms over his chest as he sneered mockingly. He could not even be bothered to spare Griffin a single glance.“Do you know why my father made you the ge

He gave the credit for saving him to a maidservant who had long since died.He took my sacrifice for granted, yet he resented me for my higher station.“Not only do I know that, but I also know why you were so eager to bring this mistress into your household. It was never about continuing your family bloodline.”I looked down at him and continued to tear away his last shred of decency.“It is because you suffered a severe injury at the border. You will never be able to father a child for the rest of your life. You were afraid that once I married you, the truth would come out. You feared the Quenell bloodline would end. That is why you rushed to find a child born out of wedlock to pass off as yours!”The entire crowd fell into dead silence when they heard my words.Everyone looked at Griffin with a most strange and unsettling gaze.He was impotent. For a nobleman whose duty was to carry on the family line, this was worse than death.“No! “This is the most absurd farce I have ever witnessed!”Waves of mockery and curses could be heard from the crowd. Joan’s face turned deathly pale in an instant. She clutched the infant tightly to her chest and shook her head frantically.“No! I am not! You are all lying!”She turned and threw herself at Griffin. She gripped his arm desperately.“Griffin, you must believe me! The baby truly is your child!”Griffin stared at her in a daze. This was the woman he had cherished. This was the love for which he had defied royal authority. It turned out to be nothing but a complete fraud.“Get lost!” he yelled and slapped her hard across her face.Joan was sent flying and crashed heavily onto the stone steps. The infant in her arms tumbled to the side and started wailing.“You loose woman! How dare you deceive me?!”Griffin lunged at her like a madman. He seized her throat with both hands. He was so enraged that he looked as if he would strangle her to death on the spot. The pair who

“My father gave this to me on his deathbed.”I looked down as I said coldly, “He said that the Grand Princess of Cathor shall never share a husband with any woman. This marriage decree was simply a test of your family’s loyalty to the crown. Unfortunately, you not only failed that test, but you were also foolish enough to doom your entire bloodline.”Griffin stared at that royal charter. His lips trembled. For a long while, he could not utter a single word.He had always believed that I was just a puppet without any real power. He had never expected me to possess the highest and most supreme authority in all of Cathor.“I earnestly apologize, Your Grace...”At last, he lowered his head. Ignoring the sharp pain in his chest, he scrambled up and began slapping himself frantically before me.“I was blinded by greed. I beg you, Your Grace, for the sake of my years spent guarding the border, please spare my life.”“Years guarding the border?”I let out a scornful laugh. I watched
