LOGIN“My ex-mate is a horrible piece of work. She loves to pull everyone’s strings like puppets.”
“And she is a cheating traitor,” Zara adds.
I arch one dark eyebrow at her. “You followed all the bad stories about my mate-bond split?”
“With huge attention,” she says, a tiny smile appearing on her face.
“So, you have been tracking my moves, Miss Lovegrove Moonclaw?”
She pushes a strand of her hair behind her ear, her face turning a very pretty shade of red. “You made a giant impression on me the very first time I saw you by the water.”
“Was it because of my bright, happy face?”
She frowns at me. “I have looked at a thousand drawings of you in the pack news, and you never look happy. You always look mean.”
“Should I be scared of your tracking habits, little wolf?”
Her cheeks turn even redder, looking like ripe winter berries against her soft skin. “Teddy was the very first Bandy player I ever spent time with, and when he told me his stepfather was a true legend of the game, I wanted to make sure I was ready before we got to your lake cabin.”
I grind my teeth together hard when she mentions my ex-stepson. A hot wave of jealousy burns my stomach because he got to stand near her before I did.
“It was just research,” she says quickly, seeing my eyes flash yellow. “I did not want to look stupid if you decided to ask me hard questions about the pack games.”
That is a good save, sweetheart, but you just told me you spent a lot of time looking at my face in secret. “No, I never look happy. Smiling is completely useless.”
“Right,” she says, nodding her head slowly. “We are going to have to disagree on that one, big guy.”
I shrug my heavy shoulders. “You can do all the smiling for both of us.” Her beautiful smile makes my chest feel warm.
She shakes her head. “As I was saying, when we were on the sand by the water, I did not know you had just caught your mate cheating in your own den with the captain of the northern team. I did not know it happened on the exact day you threw a giant feast for her fortieth moon and your stepson’s twenty-fifth moon. But even when I showed up with Teddy, I could not stop looking at you.”
Many wolves have called me scary things, but nobody has ever called me intriguing before. What you see is what you get with a Silverfang warrior.
“The pack heralds call you the Great Beast of the Ice,” she says, her green eyes narrowing as she studies my face. “They say you are so fierce that when you play Bandy, it looks like you are angry at the wooden ball itself. It means you are always brooding and grumpy, and you think being happy is overrated. But deep down inside your big chest, you have a heart made of pure gold. People think you are a monster on the ice arena, but off the ice, you are just a big softy.”
What in the world is she talking about? I am a fierce grizzly wolf, not a soft little pup.
I shake my head at her. “I am no softy, Zara.”
“Yes, you are,” she insists, nodding her head. “And today, I can give you a brand-new title.”
“Because being called a softy is not embarrassing enough for an Alpha?”
She tilts her head all the way back and lets out a loud, beautiful laugh.
I am completely captured by the smooth, pale skin of her thick neck.
Suddenly, she reaches across the wooden table and places her hand right over mine.
The touch feels like a lightning bolt shooting straight through my veins.
Her green eyes snap up to meet mine fast.
She felt it too. The eternal moonmate spark is waking up between us.
She clears her throat quickly and pulls her hand back, looking flustered. “You, Theo Kingsley Silverfang, are my true saviour. You rescued me from that dark, basement dungeon where I was trapped. I can never thank you enough for letting me stay inside your royal gates.”
“You have not even seen my estate yet,” I say, trying to keep my voice calm. “I might be living in a broken mud hut in the woods.”
She rolls her eyes at me. “I highly doubt that, Alpha.” She looks around the busy room. “This is a great second job for you. The food is wonderful, and the hall is completely packed with hungry wolves for the midday feast.”
I get the message. She wants to change the subject away from our spark. “This is a very good location for trade.”
“And it is a beautiful stone building.”
“My best friend Luca Harrington bought the three-story stone house right next to the Silverpaw Creamery,” I tell her. “That is the ice cream shop we own together. He bought the space to start his own business after he had to stop playing Bandy.”
“Did he have to stop because he got hurt?”
“A terrible leg injury forced him to give up his skates three winters ago,” I say, nodding. “It was a sad choice that broke his heart, but it was not all bad news for Luca. He met his beautiful healer fiancée while he was getting better at the temple.”
“Oh, the hurt warrior and the pack doctor get their happy ending,” she says, clapping her hands together. “The Silvermoon Temple meets the Ironfang Arena. I love that story so much.”
I shake my head at her. “I forgot you are obsessed with those old romantic pack scrolls.”
“I do not just read them, I eat them up,” she says with a big grin.
I know something else I would like to eat up right now, and it is definitely not an old scroll.
She gives me another bright smile that makes her eyes sparkle. She is no longer crying or thinking about the bad pervert from her old apartment. That smile shouldn’t make my wolf want to howl like a crazy pup, but it does.
I shift uncomfortably in my heavy wooden chair.
“There is a question burning my tongue right now,” she says, tilting her head.
“Ask me anything.”
“Why do you care so much about craft beer?”
“The very first time I tasted craft beer was during a journey to the Western Pack Lands,” I tell her. “I loved the taste after the very first sip.”
“I do not care much for regular beer,” she says, wrinkling her nose.
“Have you ever tasted real craft beer from an Alpha's cellar?”
"The poor owner," Zara sighs, shaking her head. "He is on the other side of the world, and his own pack employees are bleeding his silver dry.""Speaking of employees who actually do good work," I say, leaning in close, "I told him the whole truth about the day you got fired. He feels absolutely terrible that a beautiful female wolf had to go through that shame. He is more than happy to give you your job back immediately."Zara twists her lips together, her green eyes turning sad and fearful. "I do not think my wolf can face going back to the Moonlight Feast Hall ever again, Theo. I could never handle the shame of the other maids calling me clumsy, fat, useless, and a total disaster. Every small mistake I make will look massive under their eyes, and every wolf who saw me cry on that awful day will think I am completely incompetent."I nod my head slowly. She is right. The common pack wolves will never know that Damon Thornclaw was caught on a magic crystal grabbing her body, which is
And based on the pack scrolls I read," Theo says, clearing his throat, "I stopped by the Moonlit Tales Bookstore to stock up on romance scrolls. Since you mentioned Bandy game romance stories when we were at the silver lake, I grabbed the top-selling scrolls in the metropolis. The female clerk helping me had five more suggestions of great love stories, so I bought all of those too. If you prefer to read about different packs, just tell me and I will send a tracker to get them—or you can just order them through the scrying stone and have them brought to the gates. I bought you pack gift tokens so you can read until your heart is totally full."I am so shocked and full of emotion, I cannot even form a single word.He looks at my face and his thick brows knit together in a worried frown. "Did I miss something? Is it the wrong stuff?"I blink hard. It looks like he bought out a whole medicine cabin, a food tent, and a scroll shop all at once just for a chubby outcast like me."Zara?""You
Zara Lovegrove MoonclawA massive, heavy hand shakes my shoulder. “Zara.”I open one sticky eye and pull the thick wolf-pelt blanket all the way over my head.“If your wolf needs more rest,” Theo says, his voice deep and smooth like warm honey, “I will leave you in peace. But just so you know, you have been sleeping for five total hours under the sun.”I push the heavy fur off my face and blink up at my grand new roommate with blurry eyes. “What do you mean, five hours? That is not possible.”“You sat on this skin couch,” Theo explains, his massive frame leaning against the wooden table, “and in the short time it took me to carry your traveling bags up to the guest room and come back down, you were out like a light. I laid your body across the cushions so you would be comfortable, tucked the pelt over you, and went down to my alpha administrator den. After a long line of scrying calls to the pack merchants, I went out to run errands in the metropolis. When I got back, I had a very lon
Theo Kingsley Silverfang“Pick up the scrying stone, Theo,” Millie Fairchild says the moment my connection opens.“I am holding it now, Millie,” I say, dropping my heavy leather supply bags onto the wooden table inside my den. “My big hands were full of iron tools from the forge. What is wrong?”“It is about Georgia Winterbane,” Millie sighs. My stomach gets super tight and hard. “We are divorced under the moon. Why do I still have to hear about that female wolf?”“She needs to keep her mouth shut before the whole pack hears her,” Millie says. “A tracker from the Metropolis Scroll asked her a simple question about the Bandy Alpha Warrior games, and Georgia turned it into a big sad story about herself.”“What lies did my ex-mate tell them this time?” I ask. I kick off my heavy leather boots. I look down at Zara’s small, beat-up training shoes sitting by the door. They look so small next to my massive warrior boots. Zara is a beautiful, chubby female wolf, but her feet are so tiny compa
“Did she give it to you?”“She told me that due to assembly privacy laws, she could not share that information with a stranger. I told her how desperate I was, but my begging did not move her heart at all. I kept sending messages, hoping she would change her mind, but she blocked my scrying stone completely.” I fidget with my thick fingers, feeling so heavy and useless. “Celeste always told me she was from a tiny human-border town in the northern mountains. I tried to find any wolves with her bloodline living in that village of two hundred people.” I bite my lip hard. “I found absolutely nothing.”“She lied about her very home?”“She lied about every single thing, Theo.”He lets out a very low, long whistle through his teeth. “With no silver left, you could no longer afford your place in the pack territory? Is that why you had to live in that basement with those awful roommates?”I shake my head. “I could not pay the high taxes, and because I missed so many monthly payments to the eld
Zara Lovegrove Moonclaw“Not now, Katie,” Theo growls softly, his deep voice vibrating right against my skin as I pull the thick cloth over my eyes to hide my wet face.I feel so small and ashamed. I am a big, chubby female wolf, and here I am sobbing like a weak little pup in the corner booth of the Ironfang Tavern.“Do you want me to pack all the remaining fire-roasted meats into leather traveling bags, Alpha?” the young maid asks quietly.“That would be excellent,” Theo says, his heavy hand still rubbing warm circles up and down my bare arm. “Give us a moment alone, please. I will signal you when we are ready to walk to the wagons.”“Of course, Alpha. I hope my big mouth did not cause this sadness.”I quickly lift my head, my cheeks burning hot because I am so heavy and soft, and my face must look so ugly and red right now. “No, Katie. I am just having a very bad day under the moon.”“We have all faced the dark winter storms, sister,” she says with a kind smile before bowing her he
Zara Lovegrove Moonclaw POV“Oh, you must be joking!” Callum Harrington Blackthorn laughs right in Damon Thornclaw’s face, his shoulders shaking under his turquoise coat. He shakes his head like he just heard a funny joke from a human. “No, no, no, young Alpha. That is not possible at all. You are
Zara Lovegrove Moonclaw POV“Look at this mess!” Lady Esme Whitlock screams, her face turning bright red as she jumps up from her wooden chair. She points her finger right at me, and her eyes look like they want to poke holes through my chest. “You stupid, clumsy wolf!”“I am so sorry,” I whisper.
Zara Lovegrove Moonclaw POV“Take it back right now, Damon, or I will dump this entire bowl of stew on your head!” I yell, my face burning up.My hands shake as I grip the heavy tray, the smell of roasted meat and gravy hitting my nose. I am panting, my chest rising and falling fast under my tight
Theo Kingsley Silverfang POV “You cannot live in this broken cage for another second, Zara,” I say, my voice vibrating deep in my chest.I growl softly, my large hands still resting on her soft, shaking shoulders.
