JAX'S POV

The steel-reinforced doors of the Bay Blades executive suites looked like a prison wall, and I was about five seconds away from kicking them right off their hinges.

"Kingston, baseline it for a second. You need to keep your head," Sullivan muttered, his heavy hand clamping down on my shoulder.

The team captain was still in his sweaty practice gear, his Southern drawl tense as he stood with me in the carpeted hallway outside the General Manager’s office.

"I’m on your side, buddy. We al

Chapter 8League PR looked at me like I was a stain on Rook's very expensive jersey. Then she smiled with all her teeth."So you're the nanny," she said.We were standing in a glass conference room at the Blizzard facility at six forty five in the morning. I hadn't slept. I was wearing jeans and the same green sweater from yesterday with coffee spilled down the front. Rook stood next to me in a team hoodie with his hair still wet from a shower he took in ninety seconds flat."I'm Mara Ellis," I said, holding out my hand. She didn't take it. "Tara Singh. League communications. Sit."I sat. Rook sat so close our knees knocked under the table. He didn't move his leg away.Coach Mack paced by the window with his arms crossed. He was older, gray buzz cut, face like a bulldog who lost a fight."Rousseau," Mack said. "You want to explain why TMZ is camped outside my rink at dawn talking about your nanny punching a kid at school.""She didn't punch anyone," Rook said. "My daughter did. To def

Chapter 7Rook read the text over my shoulder before I could hide my phone. His whole body went still in a way that made my stomach drop."Give me your keys," he said."What," I said."Your mom's keys. To the bakery," he said. "And stay here with Lily.""No," I said. "Absolutely not. You are not going over there alone at four in the morning to fight my crazy ex.""Watch me," he said."Rook," I said, grabbing his arm. "He wants me to come. Not you. If you show up, he wins. He gets exactly what he wants, which is you looking like the psycho hockey player from the blogs."He stared down at my hand on his forearm. Then at my face."Then we both go," he said."Rook.""Mara," he said. "I'm not letting you walk into that alone."We didn't wake Lily. Mrs Kowalski was already snoring lightly on the couch with the baby monitor glowing green next to her teacup. Rook left her a note in sharp angry capital letters. BACK IN 30. CALL IF SHE WAKES.The drive to Little Italy took twelve minutes at tha

Chapter 6The bakery window was smashed all the way through. My mom was sweeping up glass in her house slippers at three forty in the morning like this was normal.Rook parked his black SUV crooked at the curb and killed the engine. The street was quiet except for the police cruiser idling out front, lights off."Stay in the car," he said."No," I said, already opening my door."Mara.""That's my mom," I said. "Move."He followed me anyway, close enough that I felt him at my back when I pushed through the busted front door. The bell jingled, broken and sad.June Ellis looked up from her broom. Flour in her gray hair. A smear of red paint on her cheek that I first thought was blood and then realized was spray paint. Her eyes went from me, to Rook filling up her entire doorway, to me again."Rose," she said. "What are you doing here. Who is this.""Mom," I said. My voice cracked. "Are you hurt.""I'm fine," she said, sharp. "Answer me.""This is Elian," I said. "Rook. My boss."June's f

Chapter 5"You're fired," Silas said, even though he wasn't the one who hired me.Rook laughed. It was not a nice sound. "You don't get to fire my staff, Silas.""She's not staff, she's a PR nightmare," Silas said. He turned his phone toward me again. The photo from the school filled the screen. Rook's hand on my back. My hand holding Lily's. The headline screaming about a brawl. "Nike called me personally, Elian. Personally. They want a wholesome family guy, not whatever this is.""What is that supposed to mean," I asked."It means you're bad optics," Silas said. "No offense. You're sweet. But you're not WAG material and you know it."Rook stepped between us so fast I almost missed it. "Say that again to her face and I'll break yours.""Elian," Silas said, sighing like we were children. "Think. You have a custody hearing coming. Vanessa's lawyer is already using this. You think a judge is going to give full custody to a guy shacking up with the help three days after she moved in.""W

Chapter 4Vanessa did not come to the school alone. She came with a man in a suit carrying a folder with Lily's name on it, and a smile that said she had already won.The principal, Ms Alvarez, stood up fast. "Mrs Rousseau, this is a disciplinary meeting, not a custody hearing.""Actually," the man in the suit said, "I'm Mark Dennison, Ms Rousseau's counsel. We're just observing today. Given the recent developments."Rook's hand was still warm on my back. He did not move it."Get out," Rook said quietly."Elian," Vanessa said, soft, for the room. "I'm just worried about Lily. She punched a child. That's not like her. Not until certain influences moved in."Lily slid off her tiny chair and walked straight to me. She wrapped her arms around my waist and buried her face in my sweater."Hi, baby," Vanessa said. "Come say hi to Mommy."Lily shook her head. No.Ms Alvarez cleared her throat. "Tommy called Ms Ellis a name. Lily defended her. While we do not condone hitting, I understand the

Chapter 3"Do not read the comments," Rook said.He was standing in my bedroom doorway at six in the morning holding my phone like it was evidence at a crime scene. He wore gray sweatpants and a t-shirt with the sleeves cut off. His hair was wet. He looked like he had not slept."Give that back," I said. I was sitting cross legged on the bed in an oversized sleep shirt. No bra. Great first impression, Mara."No," he said. "You don't need to see that garbage.""Rook," I said. "I already saw it. Priya sent me seventeen screenshots before midnight."His jaw tightened. "Then why are you still scrolling.""Because I'm an idiot," I said. "Hand it over."He didn't. He walked in, set the phone face down on my nightstand, and sat on the edge of my bed like he belonged there. The mattress dipped under his weight."Listen to me," he said. "This happens every three months. Some girl, some photo, some story. It blows over in forty eight hours. You just have to stay off your phone.""Some girl," I

The house was quiet. Mila lay in the dark, her eyes wide, staring at the shadows dancing on the ceiling. The spring air in Boston was finally shedding its bitter, icy bite, replaced by the soft, fragrant promise of blooming magnolias. It was the perfect backdrop for Tanya and Leo’s wedding, an event that felt like a final punctuation mark on the years of struggle that had defined their little family.

The bell above the door of The Sunshine Shelf chimed with a crisp, welcoming melody that never failed to make Mila’s heart skip. It was a sound she had dreamed of for years—the sound of a life that was quiet, intellectual, and entirely hers. She stood behind the mahogany counter, the wood polished
