I pulled the blanket all the way over my face, staring at the glowing green numbers on my alarm clock.

11:30 PM.

"Just sleep," I whispered to myself. "Just stay in bed. He’s messing with you."

By 11:45 PM, I was walking across the dark campus, the freezing wind cutting straight through my oversized sweater. My sneakers squeaked against the damp pavement as I neared the old gym. The building looked completely dead, a massive shadow against the night sky. I reached the side entrance, my fingers trembling as I gripped the heavy metal handle of the basement door. I pulled, expecting it to be locked, expecting to go home and prove to myself that this was all a sick joke.

The door swung open with a low, heavy groan.

The air inside was thick and stale, smelling heavily of old rubber, sweat, and dust. I walked down the concrete steps in total darkness, my hand scraping against the cold wall until I reached the bottom. A single dim bulb flickered at the end of the narrow hallway, casting long shadows across the rows of metal storage lockers.

Leo was sitting right there, perched on the edge of an old wooden equipment table. He didn't have his jacket on. He was just leaning back, tossing a roll of athletic tape up in the air and catching it, completely relaxed.

"You're five minutes late, Ivy," he said, not even looking up as he caught the tape one last time.

"Why are you doing this, Leo?" My voice cracked, echoing loudly in the empty basement. I took a step forward, trying to sound firm, but my hands were shaking so badly I had to shove them deep into my pockets. "Why did you put that note in my book?"

"You showed up, didn't you?" He tossed the tape aside. It hit the floor with a dull thud. He slid off the table, his heavy boots making a sharp cracking sound against the concrete.

"I came here to tell you to stop," I said, my chest heaving as he started walking toward me. "I love Liya. She’s my best friend. I love her too much to do this, to let you play whatever sick game you’re playing."

"Who said anything about a game?" Leo didn't stop. He closed the distance between us in three long strides.

"Don't," I gasped, stepping back, but my shoulder blades slammed straight into the cold brick wall.

Before I could dodge him, Leo placed his palms flat against the bricks on either side of my head, trapping me completely. His chest was inches from mine, the intense heat radiating off him cutting right through the freezing air of the basement. He looked down at me, his eyes incredibly dark, totally devoid of the sarcastic smirk he usually wore on campus.

"You talk too much, Ivy," he murmured, his voice a low, heavy rumble that vibrated right through my skin.

"Leo, please—"

He didn't give me a chance to finish. He leaned down, his grip shifting from the wall to my waist. His large hands slid right under the hem of my oversized sweater, his calloused palms shockingly warm against my bare skin. I let out a sharp gasp, my entire body jumping at the sudden, electric contact. His thumbs pressed firmly into my hips, pulling me flat against his chest with a raw, heavy possessiveness that left me completely breathless.

"Are you still going to tell me you want to leave?" he whispered against my lips.

"We can't," I choked out, but my hands were already moving on their own, burying themselves into the fabric of his shirt, gripping his broad shoulders just to keep myself from collapsing onto the floor. I was tearing apart inside, drowning in a wave of intense guilt toward Liya, but the pure electricity running through my veins was too much to fight.

Leo didn't answer with words. He leaned in and bit my lower lip, just hard enough to make me gasp. The moment my lips parted, he caught my mouth in a deep, crushing kiss that completely erased the rest of the world. The smell of tobacco and winter air filled my senses. His hands traveled up my back, his warm fingers pressing into my skin, mapping every single line of my body in the dark.

I gripped his shoulders tighter, pulling him closer as my knees went completely weak. Every touch felt like a faceslapping reminder of exactly how helpless I was against him, how easily he could shatter my control without even trying. He held me so tightly against the bricks that I could feel the rapid, heavy thudding of his own heart against my chest.

He dragged his mouth away from my lips, his breath hot and ragged as he trailed kisses down my jawline. I tilted my head back against the cold wall, my eyes closing as a low sigh escaped my throat.

"Leo..." I breathed, my fingers tangling in the short hair at the back of his neck.

He didn't stop. He pressed his lips to the sensitive skin right below my ear, his teeth grazing my flesh. Then, he bit down, hard and deliberate, right on the side of my neck.

A sharp gasp left my throat, half pain, half pure shock. I could feel the intense rush of blood to the spot as he held his mouth there, sucking firmly against the skin until the sting turned into a deep, throbbing ache.

He slowly pulled back, his hands remaining steady under my sweater, holding me pinned against the wall. A slow, sharp smile spread across his lips as he looked down at the dark, distinct mark blooming brightly against my pale skin.

He leaned back down, his lips brushing the ruined skin of my neck as he whispered into my ear.

"Let's see you hide that from my sister tomorrow.”

"Leo, let go of my wrist," I breathed, my voice barely a whisper against the loud, thumping of the rain on the metal roof of the car. "We can't do this. We can't keep finding ourselves in dark lots.""I told you, Ivy, I can't just switch it off," Leo said. Before I could reply, his large hands shifted from my wrist to my waist. He reached all the way across the center console, his grip firm, solid, and completely unyielding. With one smooth, heavy pull, he lifted me entirely out of the passenger seat and pulled me straight onto his lap in the dark car."Leo!" I gasped, my hands automatically flying up to catch his broad shoulders for balance. The interior of the SUV was completely dark, the dashboard dead, and the windows were totally blurred by the sheets of water cascading down the glass. The intimacy tonight didn't feel like the explosive, angry collision in the biology lab. It was slower, heavier, filled with an intense, quiet desperation that seemed to draw all the air out of the

I asked you a question, Ivy," Liya said, her voice dropping into a flat, worried tone as her fingers remained hovering just an inch from my collarbone. "What on earth is that dark spot? It looks completely purple.""It's nothing!" I blurted out, my voice coming out way too high, way too fast. I violently flinched backward on my mattress, ripping my neck away from her hand. My heart was slamming against my ribs so hard I thought she could actually see my chest shaking through the fabric. I forced my hands to grab the collar of the black shirt, pulling it tightly up to my chin. "I just... I scratched myself earlier.""Scratched yourself?" Liya squinted, her eyes tracking my movements with deep suspicion. "Ivy, a scratch doesn't turn that deep purple color. It looks like a massive bruise. Are you sure Maria didn't touch you when she cornered you in the bathroom? Tell me right now if she put her hands on you.""No! No, I swear it wasn't Maria!" I lied flat out, the word screaming in my mi

The brass door handle violently twisted back and forth from the outside hallway.I froze instantly on the hard black lab table. My heart leaped directly into my throat, beating so hard it felt like it would burst through my skin. My hand shot up automatically, my fingers clamping tightly over my own mouth to stop a breathless gasp from escaping.Leo did not move an inch. He stayed perfectly still inside my personal space, his massive frame pinning me down against the flat surface. His lower body was still locked tightly between my thighs, keeping us completely fused together in the dark gap between the counters. His broad chest was heaving hard, pressing heavily against my breasts with every ragged, uneven breath he took. His face was just inches from mine, his dark eyes wide and completely pitch-black as they bored straight into my pupils, commanding absolute, total silence."Arthur?" the loud, gruff voice barked again through the thick wood of the door. "Are you in there? I know I h

  • The Line I Shouldn't Cross    Chapter 16: Lab Room Heat

The clock on the wall of the basement biology lab hummed quietly, the hands slowly ticking past 5:30 PM. The rest of the class had left over an hour ago, leaving me completely alone in the cold, sterile room. The air smelled sharply of rubbing alcohol and old chemical cleaners. I kept my head down, staring into the bright lens of the microscope, trying with everything I had to focus on drawing the plant cell structures into my spiral notebook. My mind was still spinning from Jax's warnings in the hallway earlier, making my hands shake every time I tried to line up the pencil. The sudden, heavy sound of wood sliding against metal cut through the silence of the room.My head snapped up instantly, my eyes darting toward the main entrance. The heavy wooden door had just closed, and the brass thumb-turn lock was twisted completely horizontal from the inside."Who's there?" I called out, my voice tight and thin as I stood up from my high metal stool. "The lab is closed to the public right n

"Thanks again, Mason," I said quickly, my fingers tightening over the heavy stack of textbooks as I shuffled backward toward the glass entrance of the science hall. My heart was pounding against my ribs like an escaped prisoner, my mind still totally stuck on the sight of Leo crushing that soda can at the top of the stairs. "I can take them from here. Really. You should get to practice."Mason let his hand drop from my elbow, though his left-cheek dimple showed as he offered a warm smile. "Are you sure, Ivy? I can carry them right up to your classroom door. It's no trouble at all.""No, no, I'm totally fine," I insisted, my voice sounding a little too breathless, a little too frantic. I gave him a quick, tight nod, desperately trying to look natural. "You've already done way too much. I'll see you around, Mason.""Alright. Just remember what I said about Maria," Mason called out, taking a step back toward the quad. "If she steps out of line again, you tell me immediately. Don't handle
