CHAPTER 5: WHAT THEY MADE OF ME

I quickly covered my mouth, holding back the whimper that was about to escape. It felt like my soul was dying.

Every word of neglect, every moment of isolation, every lie he’d told me about having to work late came crashing down.

I was in a daze as I backed away from the door and walked out of the villa into the courtyard. Everything felt like a blur with faraway noise.

Ford was my entire life. I had left everything when I had moved across a continent for him. Without him, I was and had nothing.

I bent over as my heart started pounding and my lungs constricted. I was having a panic attack.

I winced when a sharp wave of nausea suddenly struck me and black spots danced in my vision. The world tilted and darkened, and I collapsed in the courtyard.

When I opened my eyes, I was in the pack clinic. The fluorescent lights were blinding, and the smell of antiseptic made my stomach churn with a new intensity.

I looked up to see the pack doctor, his expression neutral. “You should be more careful,” he said.

I blinked, disoriented. “What happened—”

“You fainted. A guard found you and brought you here.”

My head throbbed faintly as memory rushed back. “I need to speak to Ford—”

“You’re pregnant.”

The words cut through everything.

I froze. “What?”

“You’re pregnant, ma’am.”

My heart skipped a beat. For a split second, a flicker of the old Keren tried to spark in my chest. A baby. A piece of the love I thought we had.

Maybe this would bring us closer to each other.

“What a disaster,” I heard the doctor mutter under his breath just as I was about to leave the room.

“As if things weren't complicated enough. The pack doesn’t need the unnecessary weakness of a half-breed.”

I wrapped my hand around my stomach protectively. They didn't just hate me. They hated the life inside me. They saw my child as a defect.

I sat on the steps of the communal hall, thinking about my next move.

The same man who promised I was his soulmate was cheating on me. I was pregnant without anything of my own. I was twenty years old and stuck an ocean away from everything and everyone I had ever known.

I was stuck with no idea of what to do next.

“The healer just told me the good news.” A voice said from behind me.

I jolted and turned to see Bree standing behind me with a mug in her hands.

The most shocking thing was the warm smile on her face.

She rolled her eyes at the look on my face. “Oh, stop looking like I’m going to bite you,” she said, walking up to me. “Ford is going to be so happy.” She whispered, pressing the mug into my hand. “Drink this. It's a Vale family recipe for pregnancy. You’re carrying the heir, you’d need it.” She patted my cheek gently. “You’ve finally proven your worth, Keren.”

She left before I could respond.

I stood there holding the glass and feeling, for the first time in weeks, something that might have been relief. If Bree knew and was reacting like this, maybe the pregnancy changed things. Maybe this was the bridge Ford kept telling me I needed to build.

I was about to take a sip when the mug was knocked from my hand so hard it shattered against the floor.

“What are you—” I looked up to see the only person I could call a friend looking at me with wide eyes. “Irene??”

“Don’t.” She said, her voice alarmed. “Don’t drink that. There’s something wrong with it. Who gave you that??”

“Bree. Why?”

She grabbed my arm and pulled me away from the stares.

When we were in the corridor, she turned to me, and her face froze. “You’re pregnant.” She said in awe.

“How do you—”

“I could smell the change in your scent. You know I'm training to be a healer.” She looked at the door behind us, then back at me. “And that drink was designed to end it.”

“She just tried to kill my child?” I whispered in shock, my hands trembling as I wrapped them around my belly.

Irene pulled me into a hug. “You need to report this to the alpha,” she whispered, tightening her grip around me. “This has gone on too long. And now, they’ve gone too far.”

I let out a deep breath, the careless whisper of the pack doctor echoing in my head: “... half breed.”

Was it the same Ford that wouldn’t listen to me when I complained about something as little as being ostracized that would now listen to an accusation as serious as his cousin trying to hurt my child?

I was so not in the mood for that discussion when I knew what his choice would be. His pack over me.

I was past the point of sadness or heartbreak. I was done.

I could bear it when it was just me they were directing their hate at.

But what I wouldn't bear was them extending that hate and bigotry to my child.

I needed to get out of here.

And the only way to make sure Ford never came after us… was to burn everything down on my way out.

  • The Lycan Twins Runaway Mate   CHAPTER 86: THE CAVE IN THE WOODS

Keren’s POV"I will be fine," I whispered, though my voice shook. The night was freezing, and the darkness of the woods felt like a heavy blanket pressing down on my chest. My palms were sweaty against my jeans as I stood at the edge of the cultivated lawn. The cold wind bit at my face, making my skin prickle with nervous energy.Fabian stepped closer to me, his massive frame blocking out the cold breeze. He reached down, his large, warm hands coming up to cup my face. He leaned down and pressed a soft, long kiss against my lips, his scent of crisp pine filling my head."We are right here in the brush, Keren," Fabian murmured against my mouth, his green eyes burning with a deep, protective heat. "Fourteen of my best men are coated in Bree’s scent suppressor. We will surro

  • The Lycan Twins Runaway Mate   CHAPTER 85: THE COUNTER-AMBUSH

Keren’s POVI stared down at the piece of white paper in my hands, my fingers tightening until the borders of the parchment crumpled. The cold dread that had choked my chest for the last two days completely vanished. I was not scared anymore. I was purely, blindingly furious. These people truly thought I was a fool. They thought they could leave a threatening note under my sheets, order me around like a dog, and expect me to walk straight into their trap. But they were entirely wrong. I did not survive five long years on the dangerous, cold streets of New York by being stupid and gullible. I was a survivor, and there was no way in hell I was walking into that deep valley by myself.I stood up from the bed, my posture turning rigid and straight. I walked over to the bathroom basin, splashed cold water over my face to wash away the tear stains, and brushed my dark hair back.I unlocked my suite door and walked firmly out into the sunny courtyard.Quinn was standing by the stone archway,

  • The Lycan Twins Runaway Mate    CHAPTER 84: THE CRACKED FLOORBOARDS

Keren’s POVThe silence in the room was heavier than any cage. Two days had passed since the scouts returned from the river with empty hands. Two days since the small pack boy pointed his finger toward the ridge and spoke the words that shattered the last of my sanity. There were no leads. Absolutely no leads. The people who took my son had used specialized scent blockers that were more powerful than anything our warriors had ever sensed in their lives. The tracking dogs had lost the trail at the running water, leaving us with nothing but cold mud and broken branches. The entire territory was in complete disarray. The fierce, unified strength of the Silver Moon pack had scattered into a panicked mess of internal finger-pointing and silent fear.Irene had tried to cheer me up every single hour, but her soft words did not pierce the thick fog in my brain. I couldn't eat. For forty-eight hours, I had simply drifted between a dark, dreamless sleep and a hollow waking torment. Every time I

  • The Lycan Twins Runaway Mate   CHAPTER 83: THE BLONDE PHANTOM

Keren’s POVThe peaceful air of the park shattered in a matter of seconds. I was still standing near the stone pillar where Fabian had left me, but the morning quiet was completely gone.Guards were running up and down the paths, their pikes clattering against their armor. Even the regular pack members walking near the residential blocks had stopped in their tracks. Everyone could see that something was terribly wrong. My heart began to thud wildly against my ribs. I looked around for Steve, but the western lawn remained completely empty.Suddenly, Quinn, one of Fabian’s personal security guards, came sprinting down the gravel path. His face was pale, his breathing completely ragged as he skidded to a stop right in front of me."Luna Keren," Quinn gasped out, his chest heaving as he tried to find his voice. "You need to come inside the primary building right now. The Alphas have ordered a total assembly. Every single pack member needs to gather at the front of the compound immediately

  • The Lycan Twins Runaway Mate   CHAPTER 82: THE CRACK IN THE BLISS

Fabian’s POVIt had been two days since the kiss, and my mind was still completely locked on it.I couldn't stop thinking about the way she tasted. It was everything my wolf had ever imagined. She was sweet, passionate, and so perfect in my arms that the memory kept a low, burning heat under my skin. It was the ultimate proof that we were meant for each other. We were fated mates, and for the first time since she returned to our territory, I felt a deep, genuine happiness settling into my ribs.We hadn't spoken about the kiss since that afternoon. Keren had cried herself to sleep right there in my lap, her body completely exhausted by the heartbreak Ford had dropped on her head. But even without words, everything had changed between us.She was softer to me now. When our paths crossed in the public corridors or near the dining blocks, she didn't look at me with those cold, defensive street walls anymore. She would offer me a soft, quiet smile, her dark eyes checking me out before she

  • The Lycan Twins Runaway Mate   CHAPTER 80: THE CRACKED SHELL

Keren’s POV"What?"The word left my mouth before my brain could even process the sound. I stood perfectly still on the rug, my hand lingering in the air. I was certain I had misheard him. My mind was probably playing a cruel game on me. The stress of the lockdown, the trial with the council, and the blood in the laboratory had finally cracked my sanity. There was no way Ford had just said those words."What do you mean?" I asked, a tight, nervous laugh escaping my lips. "Are you joking? Ford, this isn't funny."I looked up into his face, but his expression was far too rigid for a joke. His amber eyes were filled with a dark, bleeding torment, his jaw locked tight as he stared down at his desk."I am not joking, Keren," Ford said, his voice a low, gravelly whisper that sounded entirely hollow. "Based on the chemical evidence that just came to light... I realize now that I actually did it. I cheated on you five years ago."My entire body began to shake violently. The tiny drop of domes

Fabian’s POVI slammed my fist into the heavy leather training bag, the impact vibrating up my knuckles to my shoulders, making the metal chain holding the bag groan under the ceiling beam and swing violently.I didn't stop. I threw another left hook, then a hard right, my bare feet pivoting on the

“Who is coming, baby?” I asked quietly, my heart pounding. He turned to me, his brows squinting in confusion. And he suddenly looked very much his age. “I don’t know, Mommy. “The Vale offers a bounty of $50,000 to anyone…” The smell of detergent and other cleaning chemicals assaulted my nostrils as the reporter's voice droned in the background. It had been three weeks since a bounty had been placed on my head, and my nerves were already stretched thin. When I saw t

“Luna Keren Vale, do you understand the gravity of what you are about to do?”My throat tightened as the question hit me like a sledgehammer.
