MasukSONIA’S POV
A very long time ago, someone once dear to me said betrayal would come in different shapes, forms and sizes and so I should be mindful of the words that comes out of my mouth and especially who I say those words to. My Mother also said not everyone likes the idea of anyone else being happy except them. Those were the words she said before she died in my arms 19 years ago. I was just 5 years old. Looking at the two people I thought I knew like the back of my hands, I realize that my Mother wasn't wrong. She'd never been wrong. I had only ever said good things about Shaun to Jessica and with everything I'm seeing now, she wanted to have a taste of what I had fed her. “Sonia honey, It's not what it looks like,” Jessica says to me and suddenly my hand itches to grab the gun in my purse. I haven’t used it before but how hard can it be? “It was your stupid talk that made me come here, you know?” I say to Jessica and look at Shaun who has been stunned to silence all these while. He picks that moment to speak. “Baby, go inside. I'll handle her.” He pulls Jessica inside and closes the door behind him. Handle me? “How did you find me here?” “That's what you're bothered about?” I ask unbelievably, my voice raising up a notch. Shaun grabs my arm and pulls me down a shadowed corner of the hallway. “Don't raise your voice at me,” His eyes are suddenly red and different, the hold he has on my arm growing tighter “If you had just minded your business, none of these would be happening.” “Oh what, it's my fault that you cheated and got caught?” No matter how hard I try to contain it, my voice breaks, betraying me. “How long have you been fucking my best friend behind my back, Shaun?” “It doesn't matter. If you want to join us, there's room for you.” He pauses, looking at me like he expects me to agree to his offer. I can only feel my lips tremble. “Fuck you, Shaun.” I whisper, pained to be experiencing such cruelty from a man I thought loved me. I suddenly regret not removing my shades earlier from my clutch to cover my red rimmed eyes. There's no doubt Shaun takes pleasure in seeing me this way because what he says next only shatters my heart the more. He lets go of my arm. “I've tried being rational with you but you're too bull headed. Leave now or I'll call security on you.” “You wouldn't,” I choke, my throat too strained to let my words flow freely. Shaun looks ahead and waves his hand, the action making the muscles in his shoulder pop out. I don't focus on what I once found attractive. Instead, I turn to see that he has in fact waved over two security guards who are now coming over. “What seems to be the problem, Mr. Parker?” The bulkier of the two asks while still approaching as his partner speaks into his walkie talkie. Having had enough humiliation for one night, I walk around Shaun, open my clutch, take out my shades and wear it. “She’s an intruder. I don't know how she got access to my room.” I hear Shaun say behind me as I walk away. “We apologize, Sir. We'll make sure she doesn't bother you anymore.” Probably the second one says. I hear their heavy footsteps behind me as I wait for the elevator to open. They enter the elevator with me as we go to the ground floor of the hotel. Usually, I tend to avoid being in the same space with men as large and intimidating as these two behind me but it seems like my mental energy is exhausted for the day. My phone dings in my purse and I bring it out to see who the text is from. Shaun: Things wouldn't have ended up this way if you had just minded your business, Sonia. Because of the love I still have for you deep down, I'll permit you to sleep over at my place just for tonight, but you're going to have to leave first thing tomorrow morning. The imbecile. I don't realize that I'm crying until I see a drop of tears splash on the surface of my screen. My attempt to wipe it away is futile because it just keeps streaming down my face. When the elevator opens, I'm a shaky mess, totally different from how I was when I walked in here earlier. My heels click on the clean tiles of the floor as I walk as quickly as I can, eager to leave the hotel that suddenly holds a bad memory for me. I'm almost through the doors when I suddenly bump into a hard figure. Strong, firm hands grip my arms, saving me from what would’ve been an embarrassing fall. “Forgive me.” I utter, in apology without looking at the man who saved me from further embarrassment. I turn to leave but he doesn't let go. “Are you alright, miss?” His voice is as deep and beautiful as his hold on me is firm and yet gentle. I'm pushed to look at his face. I have to strain my neck up and for the quickest second ever known to man, my breath slows down as my hazel eyes meet the deepest blue ones I've ever seen. His piercing eyes sparkled like diamonds in the sunlight, drawing me in with their intensity. His chiseled features and strong jawline along with a mop of sandy blond hair makes him irresistibly rugged despite the perfectly pressed black and obviously expensive suit he's putting on. “Y-yes, I'm fine.” I watch as he notices the security men somewhere behind me. He shakes his head and I notice as they acknowledge his silent command and turn away. “They're gone now.” He lets go of me, stepping back and adjusting his coat on his large form. I can see that he has questions, curious about my situation… or me? I don't know… but he doesn't utter a word. Instead, with a little smile on his face, he dips his head slightly, turns and walks away, leaving me with the ton of people trooping in and out of this luxurious hotel.SONIA’S POV I just sort of figure that if I continue avoiding Jessica’s texts, she’ll eventually think she got the wrong number and then quit texting. So that’s exactly what I’ve decided to do today. As I get ready to leave the house for my first Pilates session with the new coach grandpa assigned to me, I’m actually pretty excited for today. I get to do something different than I have in a long time. It’s a good day, really.Anthony, on the other hand, feels a whole different way. The man believes I shouldn’t be alone with a stranger I know absolutely nothing about. But he’s just being annoying. There’s no way in hell I’m missing this appointment. I’ve been looking forward to it ever since his grandpa called about the arrangement.“Or I could get you a mat so you’ll do it in the corner of the room.” He continues listing ways to get me to change my mind.“You want him to come over?”“Like hell, I’d allow that. If you need a coach, you have me.” He makes way for me to come down the st
SONIA’S POVAnthony has just four fingers on that hand. The one that has never seen the light of day as far as I’m concerned.I’m rooted in shock as I stare at him and then at his hand.Did the glove slip out of his hand at night? Because as far as I know, the man wouldn’t intentionally expose himself like this unless something happened.Because I know that this might be the one time I get to look at him. Truly look him over, I take my time in examining the hand on his stomach while also trying to be as quiet and unmoving as can be.The missing finger doesn’t look like it was crushed. Neither does it look like something that had been accidentally lost. The precision in which it was cut tells me it’d been done consciously. Deliberately.A phone—mine or Anthony’s—vibrates somewhere around the room but I’m too entranced to find out which. Not when I can barely breathe. And it’s not out of fear. It’s never that with him, not anymore. It’s because I feel like I’ve stumbled into a part of h
ANTHONY’S POVI know the only way to truly begin letting go of the past and giving Sonia what she wants is by acknowledging certain areas of my life.Areas I always found too uncomfortable to deal with, but I knew were better than the parts I’d rather not deal with at all. At least the more approachable parts were better enough to really peel back compared to the rest.I drag my eyes over my hands on the steering wheel. Perhaps I should begin with the black piece of cloth I never take off, except when I'm in my room.No one ever saw what was beneath, and when I’d begun putting it on years ago, no one questioned why I did it.Looking back, I know it was because I’d made that stupid choice during the winter. Everyone wore gloves then, so I knew it was the best excuse to hide the outcome of the aftermath of my stupidity. When winter was over, that was when the stares truly came. I walked around with one hand covered while the other went bare. Grandpa had to ask me if that was what was tr
ANTHONY 'S POVIt’s quarter past midnight by the time I drive out of the garage, heading to the one place I’m certain to find Dexter at this time of the night, since the man has some sort of allergy to his house. As soon as I’d heard that soft, pretty snoring of Sonia’s, I had left the bed as quietly as I could, dressed back in my slacks and white shirt, and left the house, but not before clearing the dining table of our dinner plates.I’d taken into consideration what Sonia said about grandpa wanting me to take it easy on my cousin, which is why I’ve decided to talk to him. That option hasn’t always been my go-to, but it does have its uses.Either way, I’ve brought my pistol with me for extra measure. You never can tell what’s going to happen, and maybe, just maybe, I might be lucky to see that my cousin will be spoiling for a tiny bit of violence. If he does, I’ll be more grateful to engage. The lights in the building where Grandpa’s men’s club is situated are still on, which isn’t
ANTHONY’S POVI feel every inch of muscle in my body tighten on hearing those words come out of Sonia’s mouth.“Come again,” I say, knowing damn well that I heard her clearly the first time and that she isn’t referring to any other cousin that isn’t Dexter fucking Romano.“Dexter. He cornered me in the parking lot on Wednesday.”“And you’re only just telling me this now?” I manage to ask while at the same time trying to keep my cool.I know Sonia tried hiding it. When we were together, I saw how ramrod straight her back went, voice even, and her eyes flicking away just a little too fast. It’s what gave her away. But on my part, I’d opted to give her time until she was ready to tell me what had been bothering her.Right now, her jaw is tighter than usual. She’s holding herself like someone who’s trying not to break. And I can’t help the anger that threatens to slip out.All anger is being directed at my idiotic cousin. The bastard. Having the guts to approach my wife.“What happened?”
SONIA’S POVBy noon, I gather my things and sign out of the office, ready to be back home and in the familiar comfort of my bedroom. Leaving the office floor, all I try to do is to be in my best mood.I want to push all Dexter said to the back of my mind, because if I’m being honest, it’s not like I didn’t know what I was getting into when I accepted this deal with Anthony. After he’d announced the date of our own wedding like he’d just casually announced the date of a trip or something, I knew that he wouldn’t make things easier for me information-wise.So, just like every other day, I paste one of those smiles on my face. It’s my way of convincing myself that all is well, and I’m not bothered. After I’ve made my way to the first floor, and I’m almost through the glass doors of the building, a brief image of something black and familiar catches my eye.I come to a halt and take one step back, whipping my head to the left as my gaze lands on the person seated in the waiting room on th
SONIA’S POVLucia did say to give her brother some time. But I figure three days is more than enough, and now’s the time to make my move. Josh drives me to my favorite café to get some treats, because who goes to visit someone else empty-handed? Twenty minutes later, I walk out of the building hol
SONIA’S POVTurns out that when you’ve got both good company and things that keep you preoccupied, the days tend to go by much more quickly, making you forget that your husband still hasn’t said more than three sentences that weren’t “How’s Hailey?” “Anything she wants is at her disposal. Let your
SONIA’S POVSam’s presence here comes as a surprise to me. During the few times she drove me back home before Anthony got me a car, her trips here only ever ended down at the garage, and then she would do a reverse and be out on her way again, refusing to come up with me no matter how much I tried
SONIA’S POVWhen Anthony comes out, it’s almost twenty-five minutes after he’d gone in. And it’s all thanks to me.Dr. Gio had come back exactly ten minutes after Anthony had gone in, ready for us to give Taylor that rest he’d talked about earlier, but I pleaded with him to give Anthony more time w
