The cold night air bit against Julia's skin as she stood frozen on the balcony.

A child.

Sophia Marino had a child.

The words echoed inside her head like a curse.

For a moment, she couldn't speak. Her grip tightened around the phone until her fingers began to ache.

Behind her, through the glass doors, Anthony slept peacefully in their bed. His breathing was steady and calm, completely unaware that his carefully hidden secrets were beginning to unravel.

Julia swallowed hard.

"Tell me everything."

Marco hesitated.

"I wanted to confirm the information before calling you."

"Then tell me."

"The child is a boy."

A bitter laugh almost escaped her lips.

Of course he was.

A son.

The one thing Julia had never given Anthony.

For years, Anthony's relatives had whispered behind closed doors about heirs and bloodlines. Although Julia had given birth to two beautiful daughters, many members of the Romano family still believed a son was necessary to secure the future of the organization.

Anthony had always defended her publicly.

Now Julia wondered if he had simply solved the problem in secret.

"How old is the child?" she asked quietly.

"Two years and eight months."

Julia closed her eyes.

The timeline fit perfectly.

Almost too perfectly.

Her stomach twisted.

"Do you have proof?"

"I'll send it to you."

Seconds later, her phone vibrated.

A photograph appeared on the screen.

Julia stared at it.

The world seemed to stop.

A little boy with dark hair sat on a swing in a private garden. He couldn't have been older than three.

At first, she saw only a child.

Then she noticed the eyes.

The shape of the face.

The jawline.

The resemblance was impossible to ignore.

The boy looked exactly like Anthony.

Julia's knees weakened.

She lowered herself onto a chair before she collapsed.

"No..." she whispered.

But deep down, she already knew.

The boy wasn't just Sophia's child.

He was Anthony's son.

---

Sleep never came.

The following morning, Julia sat at the dining table with a cup of untouched coffee.

Her daughters chatted excitedly about school while she forced herself to smile.

Every now and then, she looked at Anthony.

He appeared normal.

Comfortable.

Relaxed.

As if he hadn't spent years lying to her face.

It amazed her how easily he carried the weight of his deception.

"Mother?"

Julia blinked.

Her eldest daughter was staring at her.

"Are you okay?"

A lump formed in Julia's throat.

She reached across the table and brushed a strand of hair away from the girl's face.

"I'm fine, sweetheart."

The lie tasted bitter.

Because for the first time in her life, she wasn't fine.

Not even close.

---

After breakfast, Anthony left for a meeting.

The moment his car disappeared through the gates, Julia returned to her office.

Marco was already waiting.

Several folders rested on the desk.

He pushed one toward her.

"Everything I found."

Julia opened it.

Bank statements.

Property records.

Photographs.

Travel logs.

The deeper she looked, the worse it became.

Anthony had been paying Sophia's bills for years.

He had purchased jewelry for her.

Paid for her vacations.

Bought the apartment.

Even funded the company she owned.

It wasn't an affair.

It was another life.

A complete second life.

Julia stared at a photograph showing Anthony helping Sophia out of a car.

The tenderness in his eyes shocked her more than anything else.

She had spent years trying to earn that look.

Sophia had received it for free.

"There's more," Marco said.

Julia looked up.

"What?"

He slid another photograph across the desk.

This one showed Anthony kneeling beside the little boy.

The child was laughing.

Anthony was smiling.

The image looked like a perfect family portrait.

Something inside Julia cracked.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just enough for her to realize she would never look at her husband the same way again.

---

That evening, she found herself standing outside her daughters' bedroom.

She watched them sleeping peacefully.

The younger one clutched a stuffed rabbit against her chest.

The older one had kicked off her blanket.

Julia tucked it back around her carefully.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

Not because Anthony had betrayed her.

Not because Sophia existed.

But because her daughters deserved better.

They deserved a father who chose them.

A husband who honored his vows.

A family that wasn't built on lies.

For years, Julia had protected the Romano name.

She had sacrificed friendships, opportunities, and pieces of herself for the family.

And this was her reward.

Humiliation.

Betrayal.

Deception.

She wiped away the tear.

Then another.

And another.

Eventually, the tears stopped.

What replaced them felt far more dangerous.

Resolve.

Cold.

Sharp.

Patient.

For the first time since finding the photograph, Julia wasn't thinking about saving her marriage.

She was thinking about what would happen when the truth finally came into the light.

---

Late that night, another message arrived from Marco.

Only four words.

I found something else.

Julia immediately called him.

"What now?"

Marco's voice sounded tense.

"Mrs. Romano, I think you're in danger."

Her heart skipped a beat.

"What are you talking about?"

"The affair isn't the only secret Anthony has been keeping."

Julia stood slowly.

"What secret?"

There was a long pause.

Then Marco spoke.

"Someone has been transferring money from Romano accounts to an unknown organization."

Julia frowned.

"What does that have to do with me?"

Marco lowered his voice.

"Because the transfers started shortly after Sophia gave birth."

A chill ran down Julia's spine.

And suddenly, she realized Anthony's betrayal might be far bigger than an affair.

The rain-slicked dock turned into a shooting gallery in a fraction of a second.Luca’s bullets found their targets instantly. The two enforcers standing closest to Cassio dropped to the wet timber before they could even lift their automatic weapons, their umbrellas tumbling across the pier into the dark sea."Kill her!" Cassio roared, throwing his massive frame backward toward the safety of the black SUV.Julia didn't wait for the order to clear. The moment Marco vanished through the floorboards, she dropped low, drawing her weapon and firing two rounds straight into the chest of the driver who was stepping out of the front seat. He collapsed against the horn, sending a loud, continuous blare echoing over the crashing waves.Inside the back of the SUV, the two remaining guards panicked. One of them reached across the seats, trying to pull the terrified Leo into his arms to use him as a human shield."Luca, cover the back!" Julia shouted, sprinting through the downpour toward the side

The rain began to fall as the unmarked sedan tore through the industrial district, its wipers fighting a losing battle against the downpour. Julia sat in the passenger seat, staring at the digital clock on the dashboard.Thirty-four minutes remaining.Beside her, Luca handled the steering wheel with a calm that bordered on psychopathic. Sophia was left back at the mansion, locked safely inside the panic room with Julia's daughters under Victor's heavily armed guard."Cassio has spotters on the main access road to Pier 42," Luca said, his eyes scanning the rusted warehouses lining the shipping docks. "If my car gets within two blocks of that pier, the deal is off and the boy is dead.""Then you aren't going to the pier," Julia said, pulling a secondary, smaller leather-bound notebook from her purse. It wasn't Anthony's ledger—it was an old diary of her father's, filled with worthless, outdated shipping manifestos. "You're going to the water."Luca flicked his gaze toward her, a brow ra

The heavy, solid-steel door of the sub-level quarters didn't just close—it sealed with a vacuum hiss that seemed to suck the remaining oxygen straight out of the corridor."No, no, no!" Sophia shrieked, throwing herself against the cold metal. She beat her fists against the reinforced steel until her knuckles bled, her voice cracking into high-pitched hysteria. "Leo! They have Leo! Let us out!""Sophia, shut up and stand back!" Julia snapped. Her voice didn't shake, but inside, her chest felt like a chamber of pressurized glass ready to shatter. She stared at the silver-engraved master keycard lying on the concrete floor. Marco. The man who had protected her father during the final, paranoid years of his life. The man who had held her hand at Anthony’s funeral and sworn on his own life to help her keep the crown. It was all a lie. Every single word of reassurance, every strategic piece of advice—it was all designed to position her exactly where Cassio and the De Lucas wanted her."We

The tires of the armored sedan shrieked against the asphalt as Marco threw the car into a hard, desperate U-turn. Inside the cabin, the silence was replaced by the deafening roar of adrenaline.Julia gripped the leather-bound ledger tightly in one hand, her other hand resting on the cold grip of her pistol. Her heart hammered violently against her ribs. Inside the house. The words from the distorted phone call looped in her mind like a curse. The estate was supposed to be impenetrable—guarded by men her father had hand-selected. If someone was inside, it meant the fortress had been unlocked from within."How far?" Julia demanded, her voice cracking slightly despite her effort to remain calm."Ten minutes, boss," Marco replied, his hands white-knuckling the steering wheel as he weaved through the morning traffic. "I’ve already tried calling the security desk at the main gate. No one is answering.""And the sub-level quarters?" Luca asked, his voice chillingly steady. He was already ch

  • The Mafia's Widow Revenge    Chapter 14: The Snake’s Venom

The air on the veranda froze instantly. A low, mocking breeze swept through the vineyard, rustling the grapevines below, but inside the stone courtyard, no one dared to breathe. Silvio’s cruel smile remained etched into his wrinkled face, his eyes darting between Julia and Luca, waiting for the explosion. Julia did not flinch. She kept her gaze pinned to Silvio, though every muscle in her body had gone rigid. Beneath her charcoal blazer, her fingers gently brushed the cold steel of her weapon. She had entered this sanctuary expecting a traitor, but she hadn’t expected the traitor to be standing right next to her. "That is a very convenient lie, Silvio," Luca said, his voice dropping into a register so deep and calm it was terrifying. He didn't pull his gaze from the old man's bodyguards. "Anthony was siphoning money to Milan because he was trying to hide it from Julia. If I were helping him, why would I fly back to help her secure the domestic throne?" "Because you wanted the

The morning sun did not bring warmth to the Romano estate; it only cast long, cold shadows across the stone courtyard as the armored sedan pulled out.Julia sat in the backseat, the leather-bound ledger heavy in her blazer pocket. She could feel Luca’s eyes on her from the other side of the cabin. The silence between them was no longer just a business barrier—it was a tactical front."You’re quiet today, Julia," Luca remarked, his voice smooth, almost casual. "Still thinking about Silvio?""I’m thinking about loyalty," Julia replied, keeping her gaze fixed on the passing city streets. "My father always said that the people who smile the widest when you succeed are the ones who have the knives ready when you turn around.""Your father was a wise man," Luca said, adjusting his coat. "But he also knew when to strike. If Silvio really is the leak, we can’t just walk into his territory and accuse him. The council will see it as an act of war against the old guard. They’ll rally behind Cass
