Mag-log inBehind the huge mansion of Alexander Nick was a valley of a blossoming garden filled with red roses, tulips, delicate white lilies and lavender. The beautiful leaves and petals bloomed under the morning sun, with their fragrances filling the warm air.
At the entrance of the garden was a long, elegant aisle that led to an altar, with each detail made of luxury.
Alex stood at the altar dressed in a black suit that revealed his muscular chest. His sharp grey eyes scanned through the crowd of suited men and elegant women as they began to whisper.
Alex's marriage with Vanessa was not just a mere vow. It was a calculated move for Alex to gain dominion over the USA and Mexico, a step to be the most fearful mafia king and a step towards avenging his father’s assassination.
But as the clock ticked, Alex's fingers tightened around the silver lighter in his pocket, and his jaw clenched with anger as he stood waiting for the arrival of his bride, Vanessa.
One of his bodyguards walked up to him, and Alex quickly asked in a low and dangerous tone, “Why isn't Vanessa here yet?”
Martin’s face turned pale, and he swallowed hard. “Sir, information is reaching me that Vanessa flew away with Mafia Vincenzo and his crew,” he said nervously.
Alex clenched his fist together. “What do you mean?” he growled.
“Sie, it has been discovered that Vanessa is an ally to Vincenzo,” he whispered.
The crown murmurs were getting louder. Alex exhaled loudly and bit his lower lip hard, with a faint drop of blood on his lips.
“So she had been an informant to my greatest enemy,” he snarled. His voice filled with revenge.
“I will kill them both and feed her head to the coyotes,” Alex said.
Immediately, his eyes continued to scan through the crowd to plan his move when his eyes landed on Lillian Grey, who stood in the back seat. Her pale skin glowed, and her long blonde hair fell in soft waves over her back.
“Is that the girl owing me a huge sum?” Alex asked, his good eyes pinning Lillian across the room.
“Yes, sir,” Martin nodded. “Lilian Grey”.
“I want her,” Alex said.
Martin's eyes blinked in confusion. “What?”
“Get her ready to join me at the altar,” Alex ordered, his grey eyes locking onto Lilian’s. “Or I’ll kill everyone here.
Lilian’s heart slammed against her chest, tears filling her eyes as she shook her head. “No,” she whispered, her voice trembling, but two bodyguards had already gripped her as they dragged her to the side door.
There were silent whispers among the crowd as Alex tried to calm them down with a smile, but his mind raced.
In the upper room of Alex’s mansion, Lillian fought to regain her freedom as some women helped her tie. They stripped her of her plain dress and forced a white wedding dress that clung to her curves. The silk bodice was tight, revealing her full breast and her narrow waist. The lace skirt, threaded with shiny Christmas, flowed down to her feet.
Her blond hair was packed into a bun with soft tendrils. Her blue eyes were filled with tears, and her lips trembled as she stared at her reflection in the mirror.
She was breathtaking, a mixture of fire and ice, but to her, she knew that she was now a prisoner.
Alex paced on the altar as he waited for Lillian. He was disgusted and felt impatience as he felt the impact of Vanessa's betrayal. But Lillian was the solution. He needed a wife to secure his power, and Lilian would do.
The door was swung open, and Lilian walked in. All eyes were on her as she marched down the altar.
Ex froze as his eyes met hers. He was stunned by her transformation. Her pale skin glowed, and her eyes pierced into Alex’s eyes.
Lillian's heart pounded fast as she approached Alex at the altar with her gaze meeting his. She was filled with hatred and resentment inside her.
“Be my wife, and I will erase your father’s debt forever. Your mother will get the treatment she deserves, and your brother will have everything he needs.” Alex whispered.
Lilian felt a lump in her throat, her hands clutching her dress. She thought of her family and Liam. She still hasn't gotten over Liam, who shattered her heart, and now she is about to become a mafia wife.
“You are forcing me,” Lilian whispered.
Alex nodded. “This isn't a choice,” he said and turned to the officiant who began the ceremony.
They both said their vows, with Lilian's eyes never leaving Alex. Her hands trembled as Alex slid a diamond ring onto her finger. - a flawless oval and a breathtaking ring.
The officiant declared, “I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.”
Lilian was still stunned. Before she couldn't brace herself. Alex's hand cupped her waist, and his other hand cupped her chin. He slowly leaned in and slightly brushed his lips against hers.
His touch was electric. Lilian felt cold chills move down her spine. His lips were warm, stained faintly with cigarette and whisky.
Lilian's body betrayed her as her lips slightly parted under his. The kiss deepened slowly and passionately as Alex pulled her closely to him.
For a few seconds, her breath ceased, caught in the heat of his warmth.
Alex felt it too. He held her tight and moaned slowly as his lips brushed hers. He had never kissed a woman and felt this good before.
Despite melting into his arms, Lilian despised him. His power, his cruelty, the way he stole her life.
The house became quiet slowly.Justin left with Clara at eight. They had a way with each other, which they had built up over months. Justin carried Clara's bag without her asking him to. The door closed behind them with a sound, the sound of people who belonged somewhere going home.Michael and Diana said their goodbyes in the entrance hall. Diana hugged Lillian and told her the shop's new window display was the best it had looked. The door closed.Elena was already asleep. She had been asleep since seven, tired out from her birthday, which she had treated like a project and had seen through to the end.The kitchen was clean. Lillian had done most of the cleaning. Alex had done the rest. The cake plate was in the drying rack with some frosting stuck to it, which Lillian would clean tomorrow. The good plates were back on the shelf. The kitchen had returned to its state.Lillian and Alex stood at the window. It had happened without planning. Lillian had come to refill her water glass. A
Michael had been with Diana for three months before he told anyone.the man who had attended dozens of meetings without announcing his presence, who had spent fifteen years being the person in the room that other people forgot to account for. He processed things before he reported them, which meant that by the time he mentioned Diana’s name to Alex, the situation had already passed through several stages of development that Alex had not been informed of.“We’re together,” Michael said. As if this were a simple logistical fact.Alex looked at him.“Diana,” Michael said. “Elena’s doctor. We’re, yes.”“I know who Diana is,” Alex said.“Right.” Michael appeared to be having an internal experience that his face was not fully accommodating. “I’m still slightly…I don’t know why I’m telling you this as if it requires explanation.”“Because you’ve never brought anyone anywhere,” Alex said. “In fifteen years.”Michael was quiet.“Bring her to dinner,” Alex said.Michael looked at him with the
A letter from a law firm arrived on a Monday. It was from a law firm she had never heard of, addressed to Alex. She knew from the way he read it, standing at the kitchen counter and not moving for longer than necessary, that it was not mail.He did not say what it was. She did not ask. She had learned when he would tell her things and when she needed to ask, and this was something he would tell her when he was ready. He made three phone calls before eight-thirty. She heard the way he talked on the phone. The way a man talks to his lawyers is the tone of someone who's prepared for something and is taking care of it.He was in his study for most of Monday. On Tuesday and Wednesday, he was busy. In meetings, she was not part of conversations she understood were necessary. She took care of the shop. She fed Elena. She talked to Justin on the phone about his school project, which was coming up soon. She watched the house, where life was going on as usual even though something was happening
Elena learned to crawl and walk. She liked some legs better than others.Alex’s legs were her favorite. She didn’t think about it. She always went to him when he was near. She would crawl across the room past people and furniture just to reach his legs.He got used to it. Sat where she could find him.He was trying to work on a Wednesday morning. He had a lot to do with the hotel chain and property development. There were papers on the coffee table that he needed to read. He had been reading them for forty minutes.Elena was asleep. Then she woke up.Alex heard her moving. Not crying, just making sounds like she was awake. Wanted someone to know. The housekeeper brought Elena to the living room.Alex looked at his papers. He looked at Elena.Elena looked at him sizing up how far away he was.He put down the papers. Moved to the floor. He sat cross-legged on the rug. Elena crawled to him, grabbed his legs, and pulled herself up.She was very happy. She stood up holding his legs and loo
Jessie came every Saturday. This had started three months after she got out of the facility. At first, it was a text on a Thursday asking if Saturday morning was alright. Jessie was careful with her words because she knew she was asking Lillian, not just assuming it was okay. Lillian said yes, and Jessie came. They did not talk about everything that Saturday. They talked about the coffee. Lillian made coffee, and she always had. Jessie always drank it without saying anything until that Saturday when she said, "Lil, this coffee is really bad."Something changed. Not everything changed, not all at once. Just enough for the morning to feel real instead of fake. They started a routine by the month. Lillian would get to Greys at seven-thirty to open up. Jessie would get there at eight. They would sit at the counter with the coffee for thirty minutes before the first customers came at eight-thirty.It was the two of them in the shop before it got busy. This was not like their friendship. Li
It came on a Tuesday with the rest of the mail.Lillian was going through the mail at the kitchen counter as she does in the mornings. She was separating the bills into those that need attention and those that do not. She was doing this while keeping an eye on Elena, who was in her bouncer trying to figure out how much the tray attachment can hold. The postcard was at the bottom of the pile.Lillian picked it up.It was a card, the kind you buy at a beach. The front of the card had a picture of a place. Buildings made of terracotta on a hill with a kind of light that you only see in the south. Lillian turned it over. There was no return address on the postcard. The postmark said Portugal. Lillian looked at it for a moment. It said “Portugal”, which did not really tell her anything specific, but it gave her a general idea. There were four words written on the card. I found something. There was no name on the postcard.Lillian did not need a name. She stood at the kitchen counter. Read
THE CONFESSIONThe word slipped out of Lilian’s mouth and fell into the room like a broken glass. Jessie looked at her in disbelief. Everywhere went silent immediately. They were seated beside each other facing the television. Lillian nodded her head, “Yes, Jessie. I kissed Alex.”Jessie froze. No
Lillian’s POV: My heart pounded fast in my chest, and my eyes widened. Liam stood frozen with his eyes wide in terror. Alex stormed into the room. His imposing tall, muscular figure looked intimidating. Behind him, his bodyguards followed. Their boots hitting hard against the floor, and within se
Lillian’s POV:The evening was extremely silent. The rain had subsided with a little bit of drizzle. I had returned back to my room from Alex’s study. I carefully retrieved her phone from the study, which was seized by Alex. I had to know what was going on, even if I was now a prisoner for somebod
The storm raged heavily outside, but there was complete silence in the walls of Alex’s study. Lillian watched the lightning through the window, wrapping the blanket around her damp body. What just happened between her and Alex continued to replay in her head.
