View MoreIt would have been a backpack and Aurora Bennett wouldn't be standing outside of the university finance office. Laughter filled the hall as students excitedly talked about the new semester but not a single laugh could be heard. But her shaking hands never took their eyes off the notice.
**Outstanding Tuition Balance.**
She will have 72 hours to pay the tuition remaining to be paid, if she does not, the enrollment will be cancelled.
"Miss Bennett?"
The voice of the finance officer shouted out to her.
The woman was extremely apologetic, "I am so sorry. There is a doubling of the date of payment for this semester and in case of failure to pay the balance within the next 3 days, students shall be automatically dropped out of classes.
Aurora was able to make a smile but it did not make it to her eyes.
"I understand."
It didn't take long for her to see tears in her eyes before she walked off.
They talked about parties on the weekend, designer clothes, and over-priced holidays, while going about their daily routines. Aurora secretly checked her bank account.
This was all they had to spend on food for one week.
She shut her eyes.
She had been trying and working at a café, high school tutor and at campus library at night for months, but it wasn't enough.
Her phone vibrated.
**City Heart Hospital.**
Her heart skipped.
"Hello?"
“Yes, he said.“Miss Bennett?” he asked. “No sir, I am not,” he said to her. The doctors have just done the latest tests and we will follow-up with them tomorrow and discuss treatment with the doctor.
Aurora swallowed hard.
"Has... has her condition gotten worse?"
A quiet surrounding in the room.
All will be explained to you tomorrow by the doctor.
The call ended.
The fall sky set the scene as Aurora stood (frozen) in the presence of the weight of the world.
No tuition.
No savings.
A sick mother.
No dad to turn to.
Only herself.
She inhaled deeply, dried her eyes and headed straight to the café to which she worked the evenings.
For six agonising hours she lugged trays, and smiled at the rude customers, not caring about the agony in her feet. She put all of the tips she got that were given to her in a tiny envelope in her locker.
However, it was not sufficient even back then!
When Aurora returned to her tiny apartment it was well after midnight.
On awakening her mother was snoring on the couch in her blanket and had weak shoulders.
After returning to her room, Aurora very gently covered her with another blanket.
She read the notice of tuition.
“What can I do? “Well, I don't know, she whispered.
Then after a while, her soul died.
Darkness surrounded her...
Then warmth.
Next she came to a peaceful garden, under silver moonlight.
Footsteps approached.
There was a tall man standing in front of her, wearing a dark suit. She could only see his face and He was consoling her.
He approached her and made her squeeze out the moisture from her wet eyes.
He said to her quietly in a gentle voice, "You have cried enough.
His voice was deep, tender and it wrapped her aching heart.
Don't be sad forever, Aurora.
She froze.
Her breath caught.
She never had revealed her name to him.
As she was barely out of breath, the garden began to fade away.
Lastly, when the morning began to pierce through Auroras window, the remaining one got jolted as her heart started beating faster and faster.
This was her first time being called her name in her dream by the man.
Aurora was frozen to the spot on the side of her bed.The morning sun was flooding her desk, shining on the contract which Damien had given her. Next to her was the pen she had taken out before going to sleep. She had gone over her dream over and over again in her mind.Don't sign it.Her chest still hurt from the voice of the mysterious man.She grabbed hold of the contract. Then hurriedly withdrawn her hand. What do I need to do? She was interrupted from her thoughts by a knock."Aurora?" There was a knock on the door and Grace called out from the kitchen. "Breakfast is ready."Aurora hurriedly put the contract back into the drawer."I'm coming."Grace was already putting two simple plates out on the little dining table.Toast.Scrambled eggs.A cup of tea that they tried to make, was better than it really was.Grace commented, "You didn't get much sleep, did you?"Aurora twisted her mouth into a smile.I had a dream that was strange.Handsome man again?Almost, but not quite, was
Well after Damien Kingsley was out of sight, Aurora remained under the old oak tree. The black business card was in her shivering hand, as if it weighed a ton.She looked at the beautiful embossed silver letters on its surface.Damien KingsleyNo phone number. All that's needed is the Kingsley Holdings logo and a QR code.If everyone didn't know how to find him already.Aurora burst out with a shaking laughter."Unbelievable."She folded the card in her hand."I'll never do it."Turning, she walked away. But each step was followed by another thought that came to her.Your tuition...Your mother's surgery...She stopped walking."No."She shook her head from side to side.“There's another way, I'll find another way.”She had to.There had to be some other means. That night Aurora was fifteen minutes early at Moonlight Café.Upon noticing her white face, her manager, Mr Collins, realized that something was not right."You look worse than yesterday.""I'm fine."You've told me this all w
When Aurora woke up it was 6 in the morning. She put it out of its misery quickly, so that it would not disturb her mother. For some seconds she lay in bed, looking at the broken ceiling above her.The second day of University's final payment period. There were only 48 hours until a day of reckoning.A mere 48 hours before she had lost all that she had spent her life working for.She got to her feet, took her time and picked up a little metal box from under her bed. She counted up all the money she had saved over the months – from working at the café to tutoring students and giving up nearly all the pleasures. Finally, she counted till she was done and closed her eyes. This was just half of what she needed! When she heard knocks, she was suddenly interrupted from her thought."Aurora?"There, it was a gentle voice that was Grace's."Breakfast is ready."Aurora tried to lift her face as she headed towards the door of the bedroom."You should've rested."“And make my daughter go away hu
On that night, Aurora hardly slept.Of course she didn't understand, but for some reason, the young man who was arrogant in the café clung to her. The short meeting was nothing special. He was but another rich paying customer, aloof, impersonal, and certainly used to receiving what he wanted. She pushed it out of her mind. She would never be able to be with some people like Damien Kingsley. All she had was unfinished homework, unpaid tuition and hospital bills in her world.Theirs were luxury cars, designer watches. It was unlikely that they would ever meet again.Or so she believed. The Architecture Studio was in full swing, with students scurrying around, finishing up their newest design project. Before checking the time, Aurora had put the final touches on her model bridge.10 minutes prior to class. She was happy when she smiled."Morning."Emily Carter put her backpack down on the table next to her."You look terrible."Greetings also to you in the morning.Emily laughed."I mean
