Chapter 5: Teeth

Maeve

Several people gasped.

Ronan’s smile widened. Not because he was amused. Because he liked the threat.

I suddenly understood why so many people feared him. There was something wrong with the way he watched me. Something hungry.

Something that had nothing to do with the Hunt beginning in a few hours.

He leaned closer. The scent of him surrounded me.

My wolf pushed forward again, not with submission but with a strange, violent awareness.

Ronan inhaled slowly. His eyes darkened. For one second, the mask slipped. His fingers curled against the desk. The polished wood cracked beneath his palm.

Then his control returned.

“Make it through the forest,” he murmured, “and you can demand your sister’s freedom.”

My pulse jumped.

The reward. One favor from every participating Alpha. If I reached the sanctuary, Ronan would be bound by law to grant what I asked.

He continued before hope could form. “But you won’t make it.”

I stared at him. “You seem awfully confident.”

“I’ve had three years to prepare.”

The words entered me like a blade. Three years. He had known I would come.

The final sentence from Mara’s first letter returned with brutal clarity.

He said he’s waiting for you.

At the time, I believed it was another threat. Now I understood.

Ronan straightened. His attention moved toward the registrar. “Has she completed the blood oath?”

“Yes, Alpha.”

“And she understands the consequence of capture?”

The registrar glanced at me. “She confirmed that she does.”

Ronan’s gaze returned to mine.

The hunger was there again. Barely hidden.

“If I catch you, Maeve Cross, you will not leave my territory.”

“I’ll leave when I’m finished with you.”

His eyes flashed gold. “That is not how this Hunt ends.”

I stepped closer before common sense could stop me. “You don’t know how this ends.”

His head lowered until his mouth was near my ear. Every muscle in my body tightened.

“I know exactly how it ends.” His voice was quiet enough that only I could hear. “With you beneath me, your sister screaming in the cells below us, and every lie she told you finally choking her.”

My hand flew toward the knife. Ronan caught my wrist before I touched the handle. He moved so quickly I barely saw it.

One second my hand was free. The next, his fingers were wrapped around my wrist, holding it against the desk.

Heat poured from his skin.

The room erupted into startled whispers. I twisted, attempting to break his grip. He did not tighten his fingers. He did not need to. He was stronger than any wolf I had ever encountered.

“Let go of me.”

Ronan looked down at our joined hands. Something about the contact affected him. His nostrils flared. The muscles in his jaw flexed. His wolf surfaced behind his eyes, bright and feral.

For a heartbeat, the confidence vanished. He looked almost pained. Then his grip loosened.

I ripped my hand away.

A red imprint circled my wrist.

Ronan stared at it. His expression hardened. “Run well tonight, Maeve.”

“I plan to.”

“Good.” His gaze lifted to mine. “I’ve waited far too long for you to disappoint me.”

He turned and walked away.

The crowd separated before him.

Warriors bowed their heads as he passed. Women moved aside with a mixture of fear and fascination. No one dared step into his path.

Ronan did not look back. He didn’t need to. The threat of him remained behind.

My wolf paced restlessly inside me.

I watched until he disappeared through an archway leading toward the western wing.

Only then did I realize the registrar was still staring at me.

“So,” the woman said after a long silence, “I assume you will not require directions to the oath ceremony.”

I looked down at the registration book.

My name remained dark against the parchment.

Beneath it, my blood had dried into the shape of a broken crescent moon.

I touched the hidden knife beneath my skirt.

Ronan Caine thought he had waited three years for me.

He thought this Hunt belonged to him.

He thought once he caught me, the ancient laws would give him the right to claim my body, drag me into his bed, and keep me trapped inside the same home where he imprisoned my sister.

Let him believe it.

Let him hunt me.

Let him catch me.

The devil of Caine territory had taken the only person I had ever trusted completely.

I would be damned before I let him walk away from that.

And when this was over, Ronan Caine would learn the same lesson every predator eventually did.

Sometimes the prey entered the forest with teeth of her own.

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 17: Make You Mine

RonanThe thought of standing behind the boundary while another Alpha hunted Maeve nearly split my control apart. My gaze moved toward Darius. He stood ready, shoulders loose, eyes fixed on the same gap in the trees where Maeve had disappeared.“You follow her,” I said, “and you die.”He looked at me. “We have already discussed this.”“No. You mistook a warning for conversation.”Darius’s expression remained calm. “You have not caught her.”“I will.”“She may reach sanctuary.”“She won’t.”“Then you should have nothing to fear.”Fear. I had not feared another wolf in years. But I feared another man touching Maeve. The realization was so sharp that my wolf nearly forced a shift.Bones cracked through my shoulders. My spine bowed. Claws lengthened from every finger, and the gold flooding my vision sharpened the night until I could see each droplet of mist clinging to the nearest grass.Several hunters stepped away from me.Cassian moved closer. “Ronan.”My teeth sharpened. “If you touch

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 16: Lost

RonanForty-two women surged toward the forest.Boots tore across the damp earth. Packs bounced against shoulders. Some women sprinted straight toward the marked eastern path, while others scattered north and south, immediately disappearing into the fog.Maeve did not follow the crowd.Of course she didn’t.She ran ten paces east, then cut sharply toward a narrow gap between two enormous pine trees. It was not an official trail. Thick brush covered most of the opening, making it look impassable from a distance. She had studied the grounds.I knew she would. Her arms moved steadily at her sides. Her steps were quick and controlled, placed carefully enough that she did not waste strength fighting the uneven ground. The braid down her back swung with every stride.I watched until the forest swallowed her. Her scent remained. It drifted behind her in a thin, invisible line that my wolf followed with absolute certainty.Every other sound faded. The running women. The restless hunters. The

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 15: Midnight

RonanMidnight struck with twelve deep chimes from the clock tower above Blackthorne Mansion. The women stood at the edge of the forest beneath a sky bleached silver by the full moon. Forty-two figures lined the boundary marked by burning torches and a long strip of white stone laid into the earth.Beyond them waited darkness. The Blackthorne forest stretched for miles in every direction, dense with old pines, steep ravines, narrow streams, and hunting paths that twisted back on themselves. Fog gathered low between the trees, softening the roots and rocks beneath a pale veil. The sanctuary stood somewhere on the eastern side of the territory.A small stone temple surrounded by silver ash trees.Any woman who crossed its threshold before sunrise would be untouchable. Any woman who failed would belong to the hunter who caught her.Maeve stood near the middle of the line.I saw no one else. She had changed out of the dark green dress she wore during the ceremony. Her black trousers fit c

Maeve“I enter this Hunt freely.” I repeated. "I accept the reward of escape."“I accept the reward of escape.” My voice echoed in the hush, the words both a promise and a wish. I felt them burn against my ribs, where Mara’s last letter lay hidden... her handwriting etched into my memory, her hope stoking the embers inside me.I would reach her. One way or another.“I accept the consequence of capture.”The words caught in my throat, heavy as stone, but I forced them out, steady, unflinching.Ronan stepped closer to the edge of the circle, unable or unwilling to hide the pull between us.Cassian’s hand found his arm, a silent anchor. The contact seemed to drag Ronan back to himself, reminding him of the eyes, the rules. He stopped, every muscle straining.Aldric’s voice dropped, solemn and final. “If taken before sunrise, I surrender my freedom and mating rights to the hunter who claims me.”This was the price. My only path into Ronan’s home. My only chance to reach Mara.I looked di

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 13: The Oath

MaeveA dark, pleased expression crossed Ronan's face. He liked that. The bastard genuinely liked being threatened.Aldric raised his staff again. “Enough.” The single word rang with ancient authority, as undeniable as gravity. Even Ronan, for all his dominance, stepped back, though every muscle in his body remained coiled and alert. The rest of the names were announced in turn. I barely heard them, just distant echoes. Lyra stood rigid beside me. The easy confidence she’d radiated earlier had sharpened, crystallizing into something brittle and cold. She had come to the Hunt expecting Ronan to see her. Instead, he had threatened seventeen Alphas over me.I did not want his attention. But that didn’t stop Lyra from resenting me for having it.When the final participant’s name was called, servants entered, gliding across the floor in perfect synchrony. Four of them bore a wide stone basin between them, placing it reverently at the center of the silver circle. The bowl was a dark, stor

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 12: Before

MaeveAldric raised his staff. The silver wolf struck the floor once. “Forty-two women have registered for the seventy-third Blood Hunt.”The number echoed through the ballroom.Forty-two.Hearing it spoken aloud made the risk feel real in a way the crowded registration hall had not.“Seventeen Alphas have registered as hunters.” Aldric’s gaze traveled over the men surrounding us. “Each hunter is permitted one capture.”Silence settled more heavily around the circle.“Once a hunter has physically restrained a participant and declared his claim before an official witness, his Hunt is complete. He may not release his chosen woman and pursue another.”Several women exchanged nervous glances.Aldric continued. “If a participant reaches the sanctuary before sunrise, she is protected under sacred law. No hunter may touch, pursue, or claim her after she crosses the boundary.”His expression hardened. “Any hunter violating the sanctuary will forfeit his title and territory.”That drew several
