[Astoria’s POV]

I found myself in a sleek black car, the model was high-end, which spoke enough about The Romeros’ status.

The car had been discreetly parked so as not to draw attention to strangers.

The warmth of the car was almost overwhelming after the cold night air. A chauffeur had put in my suitcase as if I wasn’t used to lugging my things around.

The leather smelled expensive, and the soft hum of the engine felt oddly comforting. I sat there, staring out the window as the city lights blurred past.

A few hours ago, I was robbed of my happiness and the only person in my life whom I called mine, but now, I was simply going away with a strange man, a CEO nonetheless, to attend my mother’s shotgun wedding.

I would have laughed, but the morbidity of the situation only wanted to make me cry.

I wondered if my mother would simply ask me to leave after her wedding was over.

“You’re thinking too loudly, Ms. Winters,” Vladimir’s voice cut through my thoughts.

I glanced at him to see if he was actually annoyed, but he wasn’t. He was already looking at me, but there was a faint smile playing on his lips.

Wordlessly, I turned back to the window, watching the night fade into the distance.

~~~~~
The Blackstone estate rose out of the fog like a foreboding mansion. Tall iron gates stood open, as if waiting for our arrival. Beyond them stretched a long driveway, lined with dark trees that bent inward, their branches tangled like claws reaching for the sky.
I sat straighter in the backseat, suddenly feeling my stomach twist. On the way, I felt more indifferent, but seeing the mansion now made me realize the enormity of the reality.
“We’re here,” Vladimir announced as if I hadn’t already guessed.
I glanced at him and nodded in acknowledgement.
The car came to a smooth stop beneath a stone archway. Lights flickered on automatically, washing the steps leading to the main door in a pale glow.
I stepped out slowly, my legs stiff, my heart pounding so loudly I was sure Vladimir could hear it. A lady clad in trousers and shirt walked up, bowed to Vladimir like he was a king and wordlessly took the suitcase from the chauffeur’s hand.
“Welcome,” she then addressed me with a warm smile.
I felt a stab of dismay as I realized that neither mom or my step-father where anywhere in sight.
“Thank you,” I managed to say and mirrored the smile, hoping it was a grimace.
“Let’s go in,” Vladimir said. He walked past me and I followed like a newborn colt.
I couldn’t get the fact out of my head that this was where my mother was getting married tomorrow.
This was the place I was supposed to smile and pretend we were a family.
Inside, the house smelled faintly of cedar and something metallic I could not place. The black marble floors gleamed beneath my feet.
I felt out of place.
The woman who had disappeared after taking my suitcase, reappeared.
“Is her room prepared, Mera?” Vladimir asked, his tone neutral.
She nodded, and then…sudeenly I noticed her gaze.
It flickered to my throat and then back up before darting to Vladimir who stood beside me.
“Good, come on. Let’s get you settled,” he said gently.
Vladimir led me deeper into the house.
There were several portraits on the wall, and every single one of them carried the same unmistakable intensity.
Eyes that looked mesmerizing yet mysterious and sharp features.
I admired each one of them as my gaze fleeted over from one to another.
“Your mother will see you in the morning,” Vladimir said, drawing my attention to him.
I didn’t know whether to feel glad or disappointed. I mean, I was looking forward to meeting her, but she was clearly not available for even welcoming or meeting me today.
“Got it,” I said, making an ‘OK’ sign with my thumb and forefinger.
When I glanced at him, I saw that he was already looking at me, something unreadable crossing his face, but said nothing.
Then we turned a corner.
And the world shifted.
Another figure stood at the end of the hallway, at the end of the hallway.
Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dressed in black, like a uniform. His face was impassive, stance neutral, which awfully reminded me of my PE teacher when he stood at the basketball court while he watched us make a fool out of ourselves.
Our gaze locked.
Something slammed into my chest. Not fear, but…something. A weird feeling that I didn’t know what to name.
My breath hitched, and my vision blurred for half a second, like the world had tilted and then snapped violently back into place. I stopped in my tracks.
But that man didn’t move from his place. Instead, he regarded Vladimir and me.
As if sensing something, Vladimir stopped beside me. “Astoria… this is my brother and your step-brother…Viktor.”
Brother. My gaze snapped to Vladimir and then back to Viktor.
We were barely standing far apart now, so I could see how his gaze darkened, and his jaw clenched, like I had done something wrong to him unknowingly.
But I knew if I felt daunted now, he would forever hold that on me. Even I had to stay for a few days, I wouldn’t live like a scaredy cat.
“Viktor,” Vladimir said more firmly. “This is Astoria Winters.”
I waited for him to speak, giving him a small smile just for formality’s sake.
However, neither did he smile back or say anything in return.
Instead, his eyes assessed me again. Slowly. Deliberately. From my face to my throat. To my collarbone. To the faint pulse beating beneath my skin.
It was like a slow caress that, oddly, I could feel.
A shiver ran through me, deep and unwelcome.
“Welcome, I guess,” he said, his voice deep and rumbling.
Then he stepped back and turned around, walking in the opposite direction before turning another corner, disappearing from view.
The silence he left behind was deafening.
  • The Moon Marked Him As Mine   Dead Ends
    [Viktor’s POV]I found Sam waiting for me with a tablet in hand. His shoulders were tense as he looked at the screen. Noticing my presence, he bowed.“What did you find?” I said, closing the door behind me."We searched every place where Luna Evelyn might be," Sam began, handing me the tablet with the reports on display. “Whichever she has been to with Alpha Matthew, or where she usually goes as told by Alpha. We’ve checked surveillance where possible, and interviewed every witness who remembered seeing her."He slid several photographs toward me."There were no signs of struggle anywhere,” he continued. "No abandoned vehicle, no blood, no discarded belongings. It's as though she simply... vanished."I lowered my gaze to skim through the reports. I had complete faith on Sam when it came to investigations, so I didn’t need to double-check on the survelliance videos.Sam hesitated before taking the tablet and opening another report."We expanded the search beyond city limits after your
  • The Moon Marked Him As Mine   Duty over Desire
    [Viktor's POV]I rested my forehead against her shoulder, my breath ragged. My fingers flexed around her waist. I could feel her heart thumping in her chest, quick and erratic.Every instinct inside me screamed to keep her in my arms and forget everything else. But the reality wouldn’t allow me such luxury. Being an alpha, a son and…a woman’s ex-fiancé meant that I had to find answers and solve this crisis to ensure a better future.Slowly, I pulled away and cupped her cheek again. Her eyes were still slightly glazed from the kiss, her breathing slightly uneven, and seeing that vulnerable expression made my heart stutter. Her gaze conveyed so many things—she trusted me, and she was already responding to the bond even though she was a human.“Stay in here, and…don’t think too much,” I murmured, stroking my thumb against the soft skin of her cheek.She blinked several times before giving a tiny nod. Her cheeks were dusted with a faint tinge of pink. She averted her gaze, obviously takin
  • The Moon Marked Him As Mine   Illusion or Real
    [Astoria’s POV]“Morning." Matthew entered, interjecting our conversation.Viktor and I exchanged glances.Matthew looked as though he hadn't slept more than an hour. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, and the smile he offered everyone looked painfully forced.“Good morning,” I greeted nonetheless."Did you sleep well, Astoria?""I... managed," I answered honestly.His tired smile widened slightly. "I'm glad."Before he could say more, we heard footsteps and soon Aria walked in.Unlike yesterday, she wasn't smiling smugly nor did she have her arrogant stance.Instead, she moved with measured elegance before taking her seat opposite Matthew without even sparing him or us any glance.I frowned, noticing her subtly. That was odd. Did they have a fight? Or…what in the world happened that her behaviour was so different from today morning?Matthew quietly poured himself coffee, though I noticed he never once looked directly at Aria. I felt tiny bit happy because at least he hadn’t fogotten my
  • The Moon Marked Him As Mine   Hunting
    [Astoria's POV]For the first time after what seemed to be a long time, I woke up without the sound my phone alarm going off, but I also couldn’t tell if I had slept for long.Sleep had evaded me for a long time last night, and somewhere between wondering where Mom was and what her identity was, I had fell asleep.I didn’t want to get up though because that would mean facing reality.Eventually, I forced myself out of bed. There was no point in lazying in bed either when my mother was missing and I needed answers that would definitely not pop up in this room.After taking a quick shower and changing into a soft beige bell-sleved top and dark jeans, I tied my hair into a loose ponytail before making my way downstairs.The estate felt strangely subdued, as in eerily calm. Unlike my first stay here, there were no servants chatting quietly in the corridors or distant laughter drifting in from another room.However, the scent of coffee hit my nose. I followed the familiar scent until I rea
  • The Moon Marked Him As Mine   Turmoil
    [Astoria’s POV]The ride back to Blackstone Estate felt impossibly longer than the journey into the city that morning.My hands remained clasped tightly in my lap while Viktor’s attention remained fixed on the road. After all the information and practically making me doubt my mother’s affection, he seemed nonchalant, as if the information was just another weather update.As the gilded gates opened up to let the car in, my heartbeat sped up. The thought of suddenly meeting Viktor’s mother, whom I would now no doubt see in a new light, made my palms feel clammy.“Don’t behave like you know and are terrified, because whoever this woman posing as my mother is, she isn’t a kind creature,” Viktor said as if reading my mind while he maneuvered the car down the driveway.When we entered, the house itself seemed quieter than usual. For some reason, I felt the hair at the back of my neck rise.“Is it colder than usual?” I muttered.“No,” Viktor answered.I was about to say more when Matthew wal
  • The Moon Marked Him As Mine   True Lineage
    [Astoria’s POV]“Your mother is a dormant fae,” he said. His eyes carried no amusement, his voice didn’t carry any underlying humor, and his expression didn’t flicker even once.Even then, I let out a disbelieving laugh. “What the heck? You are yet again going to tell me about supernatural creatures.”Viktor’s eyes remained grim and entirely fixed on my face. The proximity didn’t help the case. His arm was still around my waist as if he was afraid I would slip away and out of the office the moment he would let me go.I probably would. It felt like I was once again back to the Black Estate and Viktor was talking about werewolves.“There’s more in the world than werewolves,” he stated as if reading my mind.I opened my mouth to say something, then closed it.“Where is my mother?” I asked because Viktor hadn’t answered me yet.Viktor remained silent before murmuring. “I…am looking into it.”I struggled in his hold, angry and scared. But Viktor held me firmly.“Her identity could be the r
  • The Moon Marked Him As Mine   The Wedding Prep
    [Astoria’s POV]It was ironic and slightly comical how my mother, who was used to dictating and making people work for her, was having to explain things to someone.The realization made me happy rather than making me feel affronted.
