The day I went for my final wedding dress fitting, I scrolled past a new video posted by Linsey Hart—my fiancé’s childhood friend. She held up her left hand to the camera, and there, catching the studio lights, was the ring—the one that signified the donna of the Lucciano family. The one that was supposed to be mine. She tilted her head toward the camera and asked, "Salvatore, you’re really giving this to me? Are you sure your fiancée won’t mind?" His voice came from off-screen, lazy, unhurried. "It’s just a ring. Chiara won’t care. I’ll get her something better. As my donna, she’ll need to learn to be generous." My heart sank at those words. All those months of planning, all that anticipation I’d carried—it suddenly felt like nothing. I didn’t want this wedding anymore. I tapped the screen and left a like. Then, I typed a single comment: "Wishing you both a lifetime of happiness." Then I logged out.

Chapter 1

The cold fluorescent lights of the bridal boutique bounced off the mirrors, casting everything in a sterile, unforgiving glow.

I gathered the layers of ivory silk in my arms and handed the gown back to the attendant.

"Miss Riley, should we take the waist in another half inch? Don Lucciano specifically requested everything be perfect for the ceremony." The attendant followed me with a measuring tape still looped around her wrist, her voice bright with professional eagerness.

I looked at the white fabric pooled in her arms—three months of fittings, countless emails, a dozen samples sent from Milan. All of it, suddenly, was meaningless.

"No need," I said, my voice flat and calm. "The wedding is off. I won't be needing this dress."

The attendant froze mid-step. "Miss Riley, if you cancel now, the fee is non-refundable. There's a substantial deposit that—"

I pulled my card from my clutch and held it out to her. "Deduct whatever you need. And don't contact Salvatore."

She opened her mouth, closed it, then took the card with trembling fingers. I watched her process the payment and felt nothing but a quiet, settling calm.

I walked out of the boutique and into the New York night.

The wind sliced through my coat, cold and sharp, carrying the scent of exhaust and damp pavement. I stood by the iron railing along the street and pulled out my phone.

The wedding planner was still messaging me—asking about the champagne tower, the floral arrangements, the seating chart.

One by one, I canceled everything: the venue, the florist, the band, the security detail. Sixty thousand dollars in cancellation fees, deducted without hesitation.

The planner's voice wavered through the speaker. "Miss Riley… does Don Lucciano know about this?"

I watched the confirmation screen flash Payment Processed and said softly, "He has other arrangements now. He won't be needing any of it."

The planner let out a sigh. "What a pity."

I just smiled and said nothing.

My phone buzzed. It was Salvatore calling.

"Chiara." His voice was low, controlled, but I could hear the edge beneath it. "You liked Linsey's post. You even commented. What is that supposed to mean? Are you throwing a tantrum?"

"No," I said, keeping my voice calm. "You're overthinking it."

Linsey's honeyed voice drifted through the background. "Salvatore, I told you she'd be upset. You really should go comfort her—or she might actually walk away."

Salvatore's voice hardened. "Chiara, you're going to be the donna of the Lucciano family. You need to learn generosity. Linsey likes the ring, so I gave it to her. It's not a big deal."

Linsey chimed in, soft and saccharine, "Salvatore, please don't fight because of me. I'll take the ring off. I'll give it back to Chiara. I don't want to cause any trouble between you two."

"Stay out of it," Salvatore said to her, his tone instantly softer. "The ring is yours. Keep it."

I looked down at my bare left hand—the empty ring finger where his promise should have rested—and felt a strange, quiet detachment settle over me.

Rather than explain myself, I simply hung up.

A moment later, my phone buzzed again. A transfer notification: two hundred thousand dollars, with a message from Salvatore. "Buy yourself something pretty. Stop being difficult."

I stared at the number. Two years ago, that gesture would have made me smile. Today, it felt like an insult wrapped in silk.

I declined the transfer. I didn’t want a cent from him.

Three seconds later, another message arrived. "Chiara. I've explained everything. I've sent you money. You'll soon be donna of the Lucciano family. You need to behave like one. If you keep throwing a tantrum like this, I won't indulge you."

I stared at the screen, but didn't bother replying.

Salvatore thought I was an orphan with nothing to her name. No family. No resources. No one to turn to. He was so confident I'd never leave, because where else could I possibly go?

But he was wrong. He had no idea who I really was.

I was Chiara Moretti—princess of the most feared mafia family in Italy.

Soon, I'd return to my family—and leave him behind for good.
