MasukAn alpha protects them all… At least, a real one does. Twelve years ago friend and fellow alpha, Hunter and Melina Blue, lost their lives when their beta orchestrated a massive coup. Ten years ago Alpha Demetri Black was forced to close his borders to keep the violent rogues that took over at bay. Today, the original members of the Blue Ridge pack are dwindling and fear for their lives. Desperate for an alpha to help them, they dare to cross the border into the territory of a killer, at least that’s what Alpha Black is rumored to be; merciless. It’s only when his son attacks and severely injures the remaining member of Blue Ridge’s warriors that the pack’s trespassing comes to Demetri’s attention as does Damian’s deep hatred for helping the pack that couldn’t help themselves. Will Damian’s attitude change when he discovers the truth behind the Blue Ridge pack? Will Alpha Demetri be the alpha they need? The one who protects them all? Welcome back to the Crimson Dawn pack with the third emotional book in the series. Content warning: This book contains descriptions of mental, physical and sexual abuse that sensitive readers may find disturbing. For adult readers only.

(Declan Jacobs’s POV)
It’s 11pm as I exit my home into the muggy summer evening.
It’s been two years since I weaseled my way into the main pack house after Alpha Anderson cut all pack members off from entering the mansion six years ago. Nothing could have prepared me for what I saw. I was appalled that the rumors were actually true. Over a dozen pups were slaving away at cleaning a house that was slowly falling apart. Boys and girls alike wearing dirty, torn and ill-fitting clothing that existed more as an afterthought than a necessity. Every pup there was malnourished, dirty, and the youngest ones smelled like an unkept bathroom. Bruises in the shape of hands were easily visible on the ones that had recently bathed.
It was shortly after that first visit that I decided to help. I formulated a plan and buddied up to the alpha in an effort to get closer to the kids. It took a solid two months and numerous illegal acts but I succeeded in being invited monthly for dinner meetings as Alpha Anderson seemed interested in replacing his current delta.
I managed to keep up the act for eight months before I got caught speaking with the oldest, a young girl who was uncomfortable with my very presence in the home. She barely spoke even when spoken to and the closest thing to a name I received from the younger pups is Luna.
I have tried for nearly two years to get the council out here but each time they respond they claim I don’t have enough evidence of tyranny to forcibly remove Alpha Anderson from the pack. My vivid descriptions of what has happened to this pack in the twelve years since Hunter and Melina Blue were murdered hasn’t even been enough to get the families who want to leave but have lost all their resources the help they need.
I beg your pardon, where have my manners gone. My name is Declan Jacobs. I’m a beta by birth turned delta upon my friends’s murder. I used to be the lead warrior and trainer for Blue Ridge but there’s not much left to protect now, especially since the rogues attacked and Alrik Anderson moved into the alpha position. Help is what I’m after tonight and despite some of the nastiest rumors one can hear about what the Crimson Dawn pack does to trespassers I’m hoping for a better outcome than what others have met.
I have spent the better part of eighteen months engaged in a reconnaissance mission memorizing the different paths through the woods to create the quickest path with the least obstacles between Blue Ridge and Crimson Dawn. I’ve memorized Alpha Anderson’s schedule for when the rogues he helped take over the pack pass through my chosen pathway and I’ve hacked into his big brother account so I can strategically schedule updates to occur at the same time every night giving me a two hour window between 11pm and 1am to make my move and return without him knowing. Hacking honestly makes me sound smarter than I am, I must admit. The truth is, as lead warrior for Alpha and Luna Blue I was in charge of using the program to track all activity happening throughout the entire pack. Ordinarily, it’s the upper ring that has such access but somehow they trusted me over their beta and their delta, Brody, went missing shortly after their funeral. Once Anderson took over I expected him to start hunting me down so I could teach him how to change the login information but it was as if he didn’t even know about the program. He never came to me asking questions nor did he put any effort into finding out who had the account information.
I walk swiftly to just inside the tree line. Covered by the darkness of night and shadows of the trees, I remove my clothes and place them in a special backpack that I can slip on once I’m in my wolf form. Once my clothes are secure I call upon my inner wolf and silently go through the process of transformation. I fall to all fours as my entire body contorts unnaturally into the shape of my lean but muscular black and brown wolf. I stand silently as I wait for my senses to adjust to my wolf before slipping my bag onto my back and proceed slowly along the path I’ve chosen.
It only takes me forty-five minutes at a steady trot to make the three mile trek through the forest to the edge of Blue Ridge territory. I duck my head allowing my pack to fall from my back before returning to my human form. I know from my own experience that entering another alpha’s land in wolf form is at a minimum, incredibly rude and in most cases, down right dangerous.
I slip into my clothes before crossing the border, I maintain my wolf on the surface without entering a partial shift so I can use his enhanced sense of smell and sight to make my way through this new land. He growls quietly as I encounter the different smells of multiple unknown wolves. I gently console him while encouraging him to maintain vigilance as this was expected. I easily find a well-worn path and continue my journey northwest away from my home land. I take my time, walking at a normal pace, I periodically stop to sniff the air not wanting to sneak up on anyone. I truly am trying to be as transparent as possible in the hope that doing so will persuade them to hear me out.
A rustle of the trees ahead of me causes me to freeze my movements. My wolf growls lowly as the very prominent scent of an unknown shifter reaches me.
“I mean you no harm.”
I call out into the darkness but before I can inform whoever is there of my intentions I’m hit hard and fast from behind. I tumble several feet off the path into the thickness of the woods; fur, claws and teeth savagely growl as they tear into my flesh. I yelp several times as I refuse to fight back. I knew this was a possibility but I wasn’t quite prepared for the amount of pain involved in getting beat to death.
“Parker, he’s not going to like it but these clothes need to be cut off. They are soaked in urine. Do we have any kid size shorts or pants we can put on him? A blanket?” Derrick immediately starts rummaging through my pack remembering what I have failed to. Meanwhile, I can hear Parker’s phone on speaker ringing on the other end. To our relief Jessa picks up on the second ring. “Micah needs Zofran. He’s thrown up at least twice since we got here.” Parker speaks before she has a chance to. “Can you guess his weight?” She responds. “Thirty, forty pounds max.” I answer quickly. She stays silent for a moment. “You need to give him 1.5 milligrams of Zofran. With him vomiting so often you need to give it as a shot.” “Yes ma’am.” He immediately opens the special medical bag he carries, unzipping it so it unfolds flat. He quickly puts together the syringe filled with medication as Micah whimpers softly against my leg. Parker approaches quietly, sitting upon the ground with a small clea
It’s the smell that hits me first as we slowly close the ten feet between us and the children. The smell of urine, feces and infection mix together in a foul smelling pool of rot. I hear Celine switch over to mouth breathing but I can easily say that it doesn’t help. With five feet left I can see that the little boy is swaying hard. His sister tries everything she can to keep him standing without touching him but it’s to no avail. I jump the last three feet, landing right beside Micah as he starts to fall. The little girl shrieks, leaping away from me and her brother but to our benefit Celine catches her before she takes off. Micah screams in pain as I hold him. I loosen my grip just enough to allow him to lean against my leg. I look around slowly allowing myself to take in the scene looking for a rock that I might be able to sit on. “I’m so sorry if this hurts you.” I speak softly as I pick him up and hurriedly move two feet to the large rock on the edge of the path. He screams aga
She was frantic telling me about what has been happening. Thinking about this little boy and his sister getting beaten after he was given a high dose of wolfsbane has me moving faster than my crew; dad let me put them together myself. Jessa has been back at the pack a little over a month and everyone involved is grateful that she has returned to the medical wing. We need her tonight. I stop for a moment on the main path we use in the south east forest, panting hard as my heart races with adrenaline. My understanding is that Micah is five to six years old but the neglect that he has suffered has stunted his growth and he’s no bigger than a three year old. He’s light enough to be carried but the chronic vomiting has Declan bringing him in the wagon. Beyond that, we know very little about the state of his health. I force myself to stand still, waiting impatiently for the rest of my crew. We need to stick together as each member has specific skills to either treat the children or to hel
“To teach the kids that the food comes from him he insists on putting the plates on the table. I’ve watched him on several occasions use an eye dropper to put several drops of a blue or yellow liquid into the food. Sometimes it’s just one plate other times it’s several. He moves the plates around so you can’t keep track of which ones it was added to. He normally adds it to the biggest portion of food to offset the bitter taste of it. We’ve all had it, I just don’t know what it is.” She goes silent as she finishes leaving dad and I wondering what that has to do with tonight. “He gave it to Caiden and Caitlyn tonight. While everyone gets spanked every day it gets worse when you’re sick.” She whispers after a long silence. “How?” I mange to whisper without choking. “You get spanked if you can’t make it to the toilet. While there’s multiple bathrooms all over the house there’s only one working toilet and that is the only place you’re allowed to throw up. If one spec gets on your cloth
“I promise you, I’m not that kind of alpha. Crimson Dawn has been a sanctuary pack for decades. No harm will ever come to you here.” I allow her a moment of respite in the hopes of allowing my statement to sink in. “Can you tell me what happened? Your last days at Purple Mountain and what happene
(Damian’s POV)While the motion of picking me up was painful I must admit that it was a relief to be in my father’s arms. I have so many emotions rolling around in my head I can’t begin to place what I’m feeling the most of. Fear, anxiety, guilt, shame; they are all overwhelming on top of the pain
“I need you to take the gown and move outside the curtain. Laying him down on the bed has always been rough for him. I need you far enough away that I don’t need to worry about him accidentally hurting you. When I call you back, I want you to use the gown as a temporary sheet to cover his body. I’v
What seems like hours rolling by is really just minutes as the medic that was working with Damian now crawls into his vacant seat. Another stands outside the vehicle handing the gentleman inside the various things that he asks for. “They are both alive and breathing on their own. I have them cover
