Chapter 2

Author: crow
The next day, a junior flight attendant named Amber Hayes showed up at our house.

She said she was there to pick up Nathan's spare uniform. Around her neck hung the Cartier necklace I'd thrown into the rubbish bin the night before.

When she caught me looking at it, she deliberately ran her fingers over the pendant.

"Do you like it too, Mrs. Ashford?

"Nathan said this necklace looks better on younger women."

I turned to Nathan.

He was standing in the doorway to his study. He didn't say a word.

Amber wandered into the kitchen and started picking through the ingredients I'd prepared, chatting with a bright smile.

"Nathan takes such good care of me on flights.

"The last time we hit bad turbulence, I got so scared I started crying. He held my hand the whole time and even buckled my seat belt for me.

"He said girls are fragile and meant to be protected."

I swept everything she'd touched straight into the rubbish bin.

"Are you done?"

Amber blinked. "Mrs. Ashford, I think there's been a misunderstanding."

"This is my house. Get out."

Her eyes welled up instantly.

The next second, the cup slipped from her hand and shattered on the floor.

Nathan strode over and pulled her behind him. "Vivian, what the hell is wrong with you now?"

Amber clung to his sleeve and spoke up for me through her tears.

"Nathan, don't blame her.

"She's getting older. Of course she's going to feel insecure."

I pointed at the necklace around her neck.

"How does it feel wearing something that came out of the rubbish?"

Amber's face turned pale for a split second.

Nathan let out a laugh. "That necklace was always meant for her.

"I only borrowed it to calm you down last night. Since you didn't want it, it should go back to its rightful owner."

The blow landed square in my chest.

Amber lowered her head, but she couldn't hide the smile tugging at the corners of her mouth.

Nathan looked at me, his voice filled with impatience.

"If you're smart, you'll be grateful you're still Mrs. Ashford.

"You live in this mansion. I give you money every month. Even the other women have to call you Mrs. Ashford. What else do you want?

"Am I supposed to spend the rest of my life looking at your face just to prove I've done right by you?"

My phone buzzed nonstop.

Clips from last night's livestream had climbed to the top of the trending list. My photos and personal information had been dug up and spread all over the internet.

"Menopausal lunatic."

"Captain Ashford took care of her for over twenty years, and she had the nerve to embarrass him in public."

"Old hags like her only drag men down."

Someone had even turned the photos from my arthritis treatments into memes, mocking my twisted hands and calling them claws.

Nathan glanced at the comments before sending me a statement.

It said I suffered from severe depression, that I'd been emotionally unstable during the livestream, and that I sincerely apologized to Nathan and the public.

"Sign it. Then post it."

I looked up at him. "Those troll accounts. Did you hire them?"

He neither confirmed nor denied it.

"Public opinion always needs someone to blame.

"You sacrifice a little reputation, and it saves my career and this family. That's a fair trade."

I deleted the statement. "I'm not signing."

Nathan watched me for a few seconds before pulling out his phone. "Fine.

"Let's see how long a housewife with no husband to support her can survive."

That afternoon, I was checking out at the supermarket when every bank card in my name was declined.

Under the impatient stares of the customers behind me, I put every item back onto the shelves, one by one.

A message from Nathan popped up.

"Sign the statement, and I'll unfreeze your cards."

I looked down at the 20 dollars left in my purse. For the first time, I understood what it really meant to be a "traditional wife."

Eight months later, the verdict was handed down.Nathan was convicted of false imprisonment, forging corporate documents, embezzling company assets, and coercion. He was sentenced to seven years in prison.Logan and the director of Ridgewood Recovery Center were also sentenced.Amber received a suspended sentence for her role in the forged documents and the false imprisonment. She was ordered to repay every dollar she had obtained illegally. After she gave birth, a paternity test confirmed the baby was Nathan's. By then, it had nothing to do with me.When the divorce decree arrived, I was at the hospital receiving treatment for my joints. The doctor looked over my test results. "A few more years like this, and you wouldn't have been able to button your own shirt."I looked down at my misshapen fingers. For years, I kept telling myself to bear it just a little longer. There were meals to cook. Laundry to do. A child to raise. Now, with no one waiting for me at home, I finally completed

The police charged into the room. Logan was pinned against the doorframe, but Nathan didn't resist.Instead, he calmly held out his hands. "This is a marital property dispute. The power of attorney is genuine, and no one's been held against their will."Sienna spoke up immediately. "The door was locked from the outside. Logan took my phone. They told me to sign a guardianship consent form. They said if I refused, they'd have Mom committed again."The officers checked the door. The deadbolt could only be operated from the outside. The room's security camera had been switched off in advance.Logan tried to explain, but Amber simply unlocked her phone. It contained every message she'd exchanged with Nathan over the past two years.Nathan had told her to buy the perfume, smash the cup at the house, leave the pregnancy test and the note, and provoke me before the livestream.Even the Cartier necklace had been purchased through the company account as a PR prop.Amber rested her hand on her b

I didn't bring the real company seal. I brought a replica the police had already marked.Officers had surrounded Ridgewood Recovery Center long before I arrived. But all of us underestimated Nathan. When I stepped into the room on the second floor, he was already waiting.Sienna stood by the window. She wasn't tied up. She wasn't hurt.Logan guarded the door.Amber stood beside the table, one hand resting on her swollen belly, the other holding a document."Mom." Sienna moved toward me, but Nathan raised a hand. Logan stepped in front of her."Put the seal on the table." Nathan met my eyes. "Do that, and Sienna goes home."I didn't move. "The police already have evidence of unlawful confinement. Keeping her here only adds another charge.""She came here willingly." Nathan pointed at the security camera in the corner. "No one laid a hand on her."I only asked my daughter to witness the final step of you destroying this family."Amber slid a document across the table. It was a power of a

The eight million had been split into eight transactions and wired to a company called Amberton Entertainment. On the day the funds arrived, Amberton Entertainment transferred six million of it into an offshore account. The remaining two million went to Ridgewood Recovery Center. The name on the company's registration was Amber. It had been registered in her second month at the airline.I turned the financial records over to the police. But Amber posted a video on social media. She wore a hospital gown, her face pale. "Captain Ashford and I are just colleagues."Amberton Entertainment is a legitimate business partnership. Every transfer has a contract behind it."Mrs. Ashford has been accusing her husband of infidelity for a long time and using her shareholder position to retaliate against me."She held up a partnership agreement stamped with SkyLine Media's corporate seal. The date was six months ago.I hadn't even known Amberton Entertainment existed.A wave of new accounts quickly a

Sienna didn't go to the side entrance.Hotel security caught Logan in the parking garage. He was clutching a blue folder, sweat pouring down his face."It's just Mr. Ashford's personal documents. I don't know what's inside."One of the officers opened the folder. The first document was an emergency spousal guardianship authorization. The second was a conservatorship agreement covering all of my assets. The moment I was declared mentally incompetent, Nathan would gain complete control over my property, bank accounts, and company shares. The paperwork had already been signed. Not by me. By Sienna.Sienna stared at the signature, her fingernail digging into the paper's edge. "I never signed this. That's not even how I write my name."Nathan stood off to the side. "When you first enrolled in school, you signed so many forms. Maybe you just don't remember."Sienna lifted her head. "When I first enrolled, you told me minors shouldn't sign things carelessly. You guided my hand through every s

"Nathan, don't stop." My voice rang out from the ballroom screen. The black screen flickered back to life. But instead of the stage, the backstage dressing room filled the screen.Four bodyguards were pinning me down. Two men in white coats stood beside the table, while Nathan held a syringe against my arm.The livestream went silent for two seconds before the comments flooded the screen."This isn't a mental breakdown. They're forcing an injection on her.""Are those two even licensed doctors?""Captain Ashford just told everyone his wife agreed to treatment."Nathan snapped his head toward the camera. He dropped the syringe and lunged for the power cord, ripping it from the wall. The screen stayed on. In the bottom corner, the cloud backup bar ticked from 72 percent to 73."Turn it off!" he yelled toward the door. "Tell the tech team to shut down the stream!"A shaky voice answered from the control room. "Captain Ashford, we can't. The local system isn't responding. The master accoun
