LOGINSYLVIA
"I... I can't," I whimpered.
"Swear it!" she barked, shaking my arms. "Swear you won't marry the Prince!”
For years, I had been the shadow of my sister. I was the Omega who scrubbed the floors while Willow practised her dancing with teachers that we struggled to afford. I was the daughter who received leftovers and hand-me-downs even if I was the oldest while Mother doted on her 'golden child.'
"No!" I screamed, the sound tearing from my throat with such force that Mother actually flinched. I wrenched my arms back, breaking her hold. "No, I won't swear it!"
"How dare you—"
"How dare I?" I took a step toward her, my chest heaving, more tears spilling over and rolling down my cheeks. "Where was this concern all these years? Where was it when you let Willow treat me however she wanted and all you did was turn a blind eye? You never cared if I lived or died as long as I stayed out of the way!"
Mother’s face turned pale, "Sylvia, you don't understand the danger—"
"I understand that for the first time in my life, someone looked at me and saw something worth keeping!" I yelled, my voice cracking. "The Prince chose me. The Goddess chose me. And now, all of a sudden, you want to play 'Mum'? You want to dictate my life after ignoring it for more than two decades? You don't get to do that! You lost that right a long time ago!”
My throat hurts from how loudly I was yelling. “Is it because I look so much like my father? You can't bear to see your husband's face? You must have hated him so much from how you treat me."
My head spun to the side as my cheek stung from the slap my mother had just given me.
"You are a disrespectful, ungrateful child," she said, her voice eerily calm. She looked behind me at our carriage rider who doubled as our help around the house for tasks I couldn't do.
“Take her to the attic room. Lock the door. She is to have no visitors, no water, and no food until she learns the value of the life I have provided for her."
"Mother, no!" I gasped, but he was already grabbing my shoulders. "You can't do this! The Prince will come for me!"
"Let him come," she spat, turning her back on me. "By then, perhaps you'll have found your tongue to give me the oath I required."
The attic room was small, cramped, and smelled of dust. I spent the first night crying until I had no more tears left and the second day? I was already numb and just crawled into a ball on the floor.
My stomach was cramped with hunger, but it was the thirst that was the worst. I thought of Crypian. I pictured the way his green eyes glowed when he looked at me, the way he had defended me in the arena. He’s coming, I told myself. He’s my mate. He’ll find me.
But by the evening of the second day, my hope was already dying out and thoughts of giving to my mother crossed my mind.
No. I couldn't give in to her. This was my one chance to have something for myself and I wasn't going to give it up.
Late on the third night, a faint scraping sound came from the door.
I didn't move because I assumed it was a rat or the wind. Then the sound came again followed by the door being pushed open.
"Sylvia?" a voice whispered and I used the last of the strength I had to look up, squinting my eyes.
"Willow?"
My sister stepped into the room, looking over her shoulder nervously. In one hand she held a candle, and in the other, a small tray. She hurried over to me, setting the tray down. My
She had some fresh bread and a plate of vegetable soup. The smell wafted into my nose and my mouth watered.
"Eat. Quickly," she urged, her voice trembling.
I didn't need to be told twice before I grabbed the bowl, nearly burning my tongue as I gulped down the soup. It was the most incredible thing I had ever tasted. Between mouthfuls, I looked up at her, confused. Willow had never done a kind thing for me in her life.
"Why?" I managed to say. "Why are you helping me?"
Willow sat on the floor beside me, looking sad. "Mother has gone mad, Sylvia. She’s talking about sending you away so you wouldn't ever get with the prince. I have no idea why though.”
My heart warmed. My sister, the girl who had spent years mocking me, was actually risking Mother's wrath for me. "I thought you hated me."
"I was jealous," she admitted, looking down at her lap. "Mother is wrong to keep you here. If Crypian is your mate, no one should stand in your way."
She grabbed my hand and tried to pull me up. "We have to go. Now. Mother is asleep so we have to get you to the palace before she wakes. Once you're with the Prince, she can't touch you. He’ll protect both of us."
"You'd come with me?" I asked, hope blooming in my chest.
"I will," she promised.
I stood up, my legs shaking, but Willow caught me. Together, we sneaked down the stairs and rushed to the back door, opening it quickly and finally, we were outside.
As such, we ran. We kept running till we arrived at the palace gates, panting and out of breath, also covered in mud and dirt.
The guards at the gates had their weapons out when they finally noticed us but suddenly—
"The Princess Consort has returned!" one of them shouted, and the heavy iron gates swung open.
They bowed and we were led through the gates till we reached a large hall.
The guards asked us to wait while one of them disappeared behind another door and returned with Crypian.
"Sylvia!" His face lit up when he finally saw me and I broke into a wide grin.
"My dearest," he murmured. "I was beginning to think you had grown cold feet. I sent messengers to your home, but your mother claimed you were... indisposed."
"She locked me away, Crypian," I sobbed, stepping toward him. "She tried to make me swear I wouldn't marry you. Willow saved me. She brought me to you."
Crypian’s eyes flickered to the side, landing on Willow.
I waited for him to pull me into his arms. I waited for him to growl in fury at what Mother had done to me.
Instead, he stopped dead in his tracks and his eyes widened. The pupils dilated until the green was almost entirely swallowed by black.
Slowly, as if in a trance, Crypian moved. But he didn't move toward me.
He stepped past me, his shoulder brushing mine and he walked straight to Willow.
My sister let out a small, confused gasp as the Prince reached out and all of a sudden, he shoved her. Not hard enough to actually hurt her but enough to send her stumbling back.
Before she could fall, he caught her, his hands gripping her shoulders.
"My goddess," he whispered and dropped to one knee before her, right there in the middle of the hall, still holding her hand.
I watched, frozen, as he raised her fingers to his lips and kissed them more deeply than he had done with me.
"I thought the stars were bright," Crypian murmured. "But they are dim lanterns compared to the fire in your beauty.” He kissed her hand ag
ain and continued. “I have seen many beautiful things, but I have never seen anything as perfect as you.”
VANE“State your name before I snap your neck,” I growled, my weight pinning the intruder securely against the cold kitchen floor. The person beneath me gasped, a small, trembling hand coming up to push weakly against my chest. “V-Vane! It is me! It is Sylvia!”I froze and felt the familiar shock that I felt when I touched her skin. My eyes adjusted to the darkness, and I looked down at her pale face. Her eyes were wide with terror, and her lips were trembling. My gaze flicked to the side, noticing the crumbs of bread and chicken scattered on the floor next to her head.I immediately released her, shifting my weight and stepping back to let her stand up.“I am sorry,” I muttered, the words feeling foreign and heavy on my tongue. “I did not realise it was you.”Sylvia scrambled to her feet, her breathing shallow as she backed away from me. She looked toward the door, her entire posture screaming that she wanted to bolt out of the kitchen and run as far away from me as possible. Before
SYLVIA“Lean forward! Do not try to swallow it down!” Vane ordered, his voice booming through the silent dining room as his large hands gripped my shoulders.I could not answer him. I could not even nod. My hands clawed at my throat as my chest burned from the absolute lack of oxygen. The edges of my vision were starting to turn a dangerous shade of black.Vane did not hesitate as he pulled me up from the chair, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind. He formed a fist, placing it just above my navel, and pulled inward and upward, but nothing happened.“Again,” he growled, more to himself than to me. A choked gasp escaped my lips, but the blockage remained stubbornly in place.I was going to die here, choking on a piece of venison in front of the man who had just announced our wedding that we never spoke about. Vane cursed, his grip tightening until my ribs felt like they might snap, and gave one final pull. The piece of meat finally flew out of my mouth, landing somewhere on
SYLVIA“Are you certain you do not require our assistance, Luna?” the young maid asked, her arms full of fresh towels as she hovered near the bathroom door.“I am certain. Thank you, but I can manage on my own,” I said, offering a tight, strained smile until she bowed and finally backed out of the room.I locked the door behind her and leaned my back against it, letting out a long, shuddering breath. The last thing I wanted was an audience while I washed off the grime of Estelle’s brutal etiquette lessons. My head still throbbed from the number of names, lineages, and history I had been forced to memorise, and let's not forget the number of times I fell over trying to balance five books on my head because I got five of her questions wrong. I almost gave up again, but I didn't want to give people more reason to talk about how incompetent I was to be Luna. Stepping into the steaming water of the large tub, I sank down until it reached my chin. The heat began to soothe my aching muscl
VANE“So the dam has been fixed, and the heating system underneath it is working again, so the water will not freeze over like before,” one of the elders said, going through the report of the past few weeks.I nodded, flipping through the pages of the copy that I had. “Good. We cannot afford the leak that happened and the low water supply for our people. What other news do you have?”Elder Brandon cleared his throat, shifting his papers. “The migration numbers are rising, Alpha. The famine in the lowlands is driving entire families toward our territory. Over fifty rogues and displaced pack members crossed the line just this week.”Murmurs broke out around the table. The elders looked worried, their faces drawn in tight lines. We were a place ridden with snow all year round, except for very few days, and so our preservation skills are top tier, and so good that we have enough resources to last us for years, in case of famine that chose to come to our land,s so it was no surprise that p
SYLVIA“Why do you not just lock me up in some tower with no doors or windows and get someone else to be your miserable wife?” I screamed at him, my chest heaving as my throat stung from how loud I was.“What?” Vane gritted out through his tightened jaw, his face twisted in a frown.“You heard me,” I said, anger still evident in my voice, but this time much lower. “I am not the kind of wife that you want, so get a busty woman who can pass all your stupid etiquette classes and be the one to do the coming-out ceremony instead of me. I am tired of the bullshit—”“ENOUGH!”I flinched backwards, my eyes widening as I realised that I might have overstepped. His eyes raked over my features with a dark gaze, and I could feel his murderous intent washing over me. My body trembled in response to the immense power that he released. He took a step toward me. I wanted to sprint the other way, but I could not. He took another step until he was right in my face, leaning down so our eyes were level.
SYLVIAI pushed myself off the floor and onto my feet, dusting my clothes and standing properly in front of him with my hands clasped tightly in front of my waist. Vane was standing in front of me, and he was shirtless. Was there ever a time he had a short on He was staring at me with a slight frown on his face, and my eyes were glued to his chest before tracing his entire body, and I noticed the sword in his hand. "You should just cut my head off," I said. "Get it over with."Vane looked taken aback by what I had said before he threw his head back, laughing, and it was way more than all the other times I had seen him do that. "I was training," he said, when he had recovered, his voice back to its usual flatness like the laugh had never happened. “Why would that be the first thing that comes to your mind? That I wanted to kill you? If I wanted to, that would have happened a long time ago, darling.” I opened my mouth and closed it, a bit flustered at the word he had just called me,
VANE “How does it feel to be back, Sir?” My closest man and my beta asked me, walking beside me as we stormed the halls of the palace to where my brother was. “I hate it,” I replied in a curt tone and he nodded his head, holding back his laughter. “I am guessing you want to go back to the battle
SYLVIA "Crypian?" I whispered, sounding pathetic. He didn't even flinch at the sound of my voice, nor did he turn to look at me. He just kept basking in Willow's beauty and Willow? She had her face turned to him. I could see the care for me that she had shown in the attic slowly fading away."Cr
SYLVIA. I shook where I stood, trying my hardest not to look at him.“Please don't kill me,” I murmured, my body shaking more. “P-please, don't kill me.” My vision was blurring over and I felt faint. Was I going to die? By the hands of the one who was supposed to swear to love me for the rest of
SYLVIA They didn't wait for me to respond before dragging me away. “W-wait. I can explain.” I tried begging but they refused to listen and everyone was already snickering and making fun of me. I turned my head in Willow's direction, begging for her to help me but she turned her head away, coveri
