The first Tuesday it arrived, he thought it was Maya.

He was at his desk at 12:30, halfway through a vendor access audit that needed to be done by Friday, when there was a knock at the door. A delivery guy with a bag from a restaurant he recognised from the area around the Sinclair building. No note. Just the food, packed neatly, everything warm.

He texted Maya: Did you send me lunch?

She replied: No. Why, someone sent you lunch?

He looked at the bag. He looked at the contents. Someone had orde

  • The S-Tier's Omega Bodyguard    The Naming

Maya wasn't coming until six. At five-fifteen the apartment was wrapped in the kind of quiet that only existed before life changed forever. The overnight bags rested beside the front door, packed and repacked so many times that Kieran could no longer remember what was actually inside them. Tiny blankets, newborn clothes, paperwork, snacks, chargers everything should have been there. Should. He stood in the bathroom holding Dr. Chen's checklist for the fourth time, staring at the words without really reading them. His mind usually worked with comforting precision. Today it felt wonderfully, hopelessly unreliable. Had he packed the second folder? The spare swaddles? He couldn't remember. A soft whistle from the kettle drifted in from the kitchen. Giving up with a quiet laugh, Kieran folded the list and slipped it into his pocket. "If I've forgotten something," he murmured to himself, "we'll survive." Today wasn't about being perfectly prepared. Today was about meet

  • The S-Tier's Omega Bodyguard    The Night Before

He couldn't sleep. This wasn't a surprise. He'd been sleeping badly for weeks, the particular bad sleep that came from being thirty-seven weeks pregnant with two people who had strong opinions about the position he was lying in. Tonight was different though. Tonight the not-sleeping was less physical and more the kind where your brain simply refuses to stop going even when your body is exhausted. He got up at half past midnight. He went to the living room.Elliot was already there. He was sitting on the couch in the dark with his phone face-down on the cushion beside him and his arms on his knees, looking at the window. He turned when Kieran came in and the expression on his face said he'd been awake for a while too."Couldn't sleep?" Kieran said."No." He moved over on the couch. "Come sit."Kieran sat. The apartment was quiet the way it only got very late, the street outside having given up on noise for the night, just the occasional car going past somewhere further away. They sat t

  • The S-Tier's Omega Bodyguard    Sophia and Rachel

The letters went out on Friday. Not through Hartley. Not through the company's legal team or a PR contact or anyone whose job it was to make difficult things easier to deliver. Elliot wrote them himself on Thursday evening at his desk, two separate letters, and sealed them and had them sent by hand the next morning. He told Kieran on Saturday. Just: I sent letters to Sophia and Rachel. Settlement offers. Handwritten. Thought you should know before they respond.Kieran sat with his tea and read the message and didn't reply immediately. He thought about Sophia in the café three months ago, saying I took it for myself, there's a difference. He thought about Rachel on the phone saying don't call me again after this, just don't do it to anyone else. He thought about Helen who was not ready and might never be and whose number he'd kept anyway. He texted back: Okay. Let me know what they say.✦ ✦ ✦Sophia called him directly. Not Elliot. Him. He picked up and she said: "I read it." Just th

  • The S-Tier's Omega Bodyguard    Weeks

Dr. Chen did the scan herself that morning. She didn't always at this stage. She had a team, and they were good, and at thirty-seven weeks a routine scan was routine. But she was there herself, moving the probe slowly, going through every measurement with the kind of focus that meant she was actually looking rather than ticking boxes. Both of them. Both measuring right. Both where they were supposed to be.She set the probe down and looked at the screen for a moment without saying anything. Then: "Alright." That was it. One word, in the tone she used when something she'd been quietly worried about had come back okay.Kieran lay on the table and stared at the ceiling.Thirty-seven weeks. He'd done the math on this number so many times in the last nine months that it had become almost abstract. A target. Something to reach. And now he was here and both twins were here and Dr. Chen had just said alright in that tone and he felt something in his chest that he couldn't quite describe. Not

  • The S-Tier's Omega Bodyguard    the first Date

MAYA Kieran booked the restaurant without being asked. He texted her on a Thursday afternoon a name, an address, and a time, and then: You've been waiting long enough. Book it. She stared at the message. Then she forwarded the details to Dr. Chen with: My brother has apparently sorted us a restaurant. Saturday seven. In case you wanted to know. Dr. Chen replied after a few minutes: I'll be there. Four words. Maya read them and felt something she hadn't felt in a long time, which was the kind of excitement that lived in your stomach rather than your head. The head kind you could talk yourself out of. The stomach kind just sat there, honest, not interested in being argued with. Saturday came. She got ready too slowly. She was aware she was doing it and did it anyway. She put on the green dress she'd bought three months ago without an occasion in mind, looked at herself, thought: okay. That works. She left before she could change her mind. ✦ ✦ ✦ Dr. Chen was standing outsi

  • The S-Tier's Omega Bodyguard    Clara's Epilogue

Clara texted on a Saturday: I'm nearby. Lunch? My treat.Kieran was on the couch trying to find a position that didn't make his back hurt, which at thirty-four weeks with twins was a project with no good solution. He read the message and thought about it for about three seconds. He texted back a restaurant name and a time and went to find clothes that still fit.She was already inside when he got there, at a corner table, reading something on her phone and smiling at it. She looked up and waved him over and he noticed right away that she seemed different. Not in any way he could point at exactly. Just lighter. Like she'd put something down."You're in a good mood," he said, sitting down."I am." She folded her phone away. "You look tired but otherwise okay.""That's accurate."✦ ✦ ✦They ordered. She asked about the Sun City project because she'd seen something about it and was curious. He asked about her work at the nonprofit, which had started three months ago and which she talked

  • The S-Tier's Omega Bodyguard    Clara and Kieran

CLARAShe'd noticed three weeks ago.Not at the gala she'd been at the gala and hadn't seen Kieran, hadn't known he was two floors below, had spent the evening doing the particular social work of being Elliot's former fiancée in a room full of people who were still recalibrating what that meant. • The S-Tier's Omega Bodyguard    Marcus Escalates

Kieran heard about the bomb threat the same way he heard about most things these days through his laptop, cross-legged on Maya's couch, wearing a sweatshirt with a hole in the sleeve because he hadn't been to his own apartment in two weeks.Ryan called first. It was eleven in the morning on a Monda

  • The S-Tier's Omega Bodyguard    Discharge Conditions

KIERANDr. Chen discharged him on Thursday afternoon with a list of conditions that she read out in the flat, unhurried tone she used for things she expected to be argued with and had pre-emptively decided not to budge on.No sustained physical exertion. No proximity to the rejecting alpha for more

  • The S-Tier's Omega Bodyguard    The Journalist's Deadline

Jessica Chen called on a Wednesday.Kieran had been expecting it. Maya had bought him two weeks back in the hospital, and two weeks was up on Wednesday, and Jessica Chen was the kind of journalist who kept track of her own deadlines with the specific focus of someone who'd learned that extensions h
