Chapter five

THREE MONTHS LATER

ADRIANs POV

It's been three months of partying, spontaneous matches, practice, literally doing everything possible to bury the dreadful memories of spring falls, because it wasn't worth holding onto, whatever happened there stayed there, that was the agreement, and this king doesn’t revisit mistakes; especially the ones that don’t benefit me.

Life moved exactly how it was supposed to after that; back to normal, and that was me staying where I belonged; on top.

Everything else was background noise; including her. Sophie went back to wherever she came from; quiet, invisible, irrelevant… exactly how she  preferred it.

“ADRIAN! ADRIAN! ADRIAN!”

The stadium roared like it always did; loud, obsessive… just as I expected it to be. I exhaled slowly as the final whistle blew, rolling my shoulders as the adrenaline settled just enough to think clearly again.

Another win; another trophy in the bag.

It wasn't just another victory; it was a statement; it was a king statement and around here, I was the king.

My teammates rushed me immediately, slamming into me, shouting over each other.

“THAT’S OUR CAPTAIN!”

“FINALS!”

“DID YOU SEE THAT PLAY?!”

I smirked slightly, letting the energy run its course as we went through our usual hype; hands hitting, voices rough, controlled chaos.

Victory always sounds the same.

“Alright, enough!”

The coach's voice cut through it, as we settled. He stepped forward, scanning all of us, then nodded.

“We’re moving to the finals.”

Silence for half a second, then the room exploded again. Noise everywhere.

So much excitement… this was my world.

I didn’t react like them, cause i already knew where we were headed.

“Adrian… my captain.” I stepped forward. He nodded once.

“Good game. No, no, no…great game.”

“I know,” I said. A few guys laughed behind me.

The coach shook his head slightly, then reached into his folder.

“This came in for you.” He handed me an envelope.

I opened it without hesitation. Read it once, then again, cause i wasn’t able to believe my eyes

Princeton Football League, the scouts were attending the next game.

Another performance like today, and I’m stepping into the big leagues..Exactly where I’m supposed to be.

“ This is big coach,” it was hard containing  my excitement.

“No, that’s huge,” Coach said. “Befitting for the best of the best and if you are able to keep this up, you’re not just heading to finals….you’re heading out of here. I’m sure your father will be proud.”

My smile didn’t drop, but it stopped growing.

“Yes, he will. I promise I won't disappoint you coach,” I said.

He nodded.

“Double your effort. No distractions.”

No distractions, that part mattered more than the rest.

The team swarmed me again after that, but I was already ahead; next game, next move, next win.

That’s all that matters, everything else gets removed.

Eventually, the noise faded. The locker room emptied, then silence settled.

I walked to my locker, unlocking it, already running through plays in my head, when something slipped.

A soft sound, paper hitting the floor.

I frowned, looking down.

An envelope? And I was certain I didn't keep any in my locker.

I picked it up slowly. It had no name or address on it.

It was just blank, that alone told me enough; this wasn’t random. I scanned the room briefly before I opened it,  inside was a document. My eyes scanned it once, then again, slower this time.

It was the freaking Marriage Registration Certificate.

For a second, the air in the room shifted. It was colder.

I didn’t react outwardly, that wasn’t something I did, then I saw the note.

Folded neatly behind it, tucked like it belonged there.

I pulled it out, unfolding it with steady hands, my eyes moving across the words.

Once,then again,and this time…I understood.

“You’re playing your role perfectly.”

A pause.

“But you don’t get to end a story I started.”

My jaw tightened slightly, that wasn’t a guess, that was information, and that meant they knew… everything; The agreement. The distance. The silence.

Then the last line,“Finals night… let’s see how well you perform when you’re not the one in control.”

Heavy silence filled the locker room.

I looked around once again.

But this—This wasn’t random, it  was timing, it was pressure, and definitely deliberate.

Three months of silence…just to step back in now. Why?

I folded the paper once and then squeezed it.  Whoever this is; they didn’t just remind me, they challenged me., and I wasn't having it.

A small smirk pulled at the corner of my mouth.“Finals night?” I muttered.

Then my eyes dropped briefly to the name on the document.

Sophie. My gaze hardened, because now, it wasn’t just a distraction.

It was interference, and I don’t allow that.

I slipped the note  back into the envelope, shutting my locker quietly.

“Bad timing,” I said under my breath.

Because they picked the one moment that matters most. The finals, the scouts… my future.

My father is watching.. everything aligned, and now, someone wants to play.

I straightened, grabbing my bag, already adjusting, already calculating, already deciding how this ends.

Because whoever this i…They made one mistake.

They thought they could control the game. I stepped out of the locker room, expression back in place.

But this time—I wasn’t just playing to win.

I was playing to find them, and when I do…they don’t get a second move.

CHAPTER FORTY-TWOSOPHIE'S POVDaniel's question lingered in the air, wrapping itself around every pair of eyes fixed on us. The hallway had become unnaturally quiet, as though hundreds of students had collectively forgotten how to breathe while they waited for my answer. Daniel remained on one knee with the bouquet cradled carefully in his hands, his nervous smile wavering ever so slightly beneath the weight of my silence, and all I could do was stare back at him, my thoughts tangling over one another until I couldn't separate one from the next. This wasn't how today was supposed to go. None of this was supposed to happen in front of an audience, and certainly not with the entire school watching my every expression as if my answer belonged to them too.A sudden ripple swept through the crowd before I had the chance to speak. Whispers broke out from somewhere behind the students, followed by people instinctively stepping aside until a narrow path appeared through the middle of the h

CHAPTER FORTY-ONEADRIAN'S POVIf anyone asked me what today's lecture had been about, I wouldn't have been able to answer even if my life depended on it. The professor had spent the better part of an hour filling the whiteboard with formulas and explanations while the rest of the class scribbled away diligently, but every word that left his mouth seemed to dissolve before it reached me because my mind had stubbornly latched onto something far more frustrating than chemistry. The entire school knew; they knew Sophie and I had broken up, or at least that was the story making its rounds through every hallway and classroom, and as much as I tried to convince myself it shouldn't matter, the irritation refused to loosen its grip. I had always known this fake relationship would end one day. Hell, I was the one who had agreed to call off the plan after everything that happened with Daniel. So why did it feel like someone else had made that decision for me? Why did it feel like I had been

Chapter fortyAdrian's pov The moment I stepped into school, I knew something had already shifted, not because anyone said anything directly to me at first, but because the air itself felt like it had been rearranged overnight and I was only just catching up to a conversation everyone else had already finished, and that realization settled in slowly as I walked through the gates and noticed how eyes lingered a second too long, how voices dropped a fraction too quickly, and how even the usual chaos of the corridor seemed to bend slightly around me instead of through me as it normally would.Tom appeared beside me almost immediately, falling into step like he always did as co-captain, but even that felt different today because there was no easy rhythm between us, only a careful silence that suggested he was deciding how to say something he already knew I wouldn’t like, and I didn’t need to look at him to know what was coming because people never waited this long to talk about something

Chapter thirty nineSophie's povThe moment Stacey disappeared deeper into the diner with her little entourage eagerly following behind her, the suffocating tension she'd left in her wake slowly dissolved into the familiar rhythm of the afternoon crowd. Conversations resumed as though someone had unpaused the room, chairs scraped softly against the tiled floor, waitresses weaved effortlessly between tables balancing trays of food, and laughter drifted from one corner of the diner to another. Life had already moved on from the little spectacle she'd created, but I knew the students who had witnessed it hadn't. Judging by the number of glowing phone screens I'd caught before she'd even reached the exit, messages were already spreading across school, each version growing a little more dramatic than the last. By tomorrow morning there would probably be stories claiming I'd cried, slapped somebody, started another fight, or declared war on the entire female population. The thought sho

Chapter thirty eightSophie's povThe moment I stepped inside the diner, the noise hit me all at once. Students occupied nearly every booth, waitresses moved between crowded tables carrying trays balanced on one hand, and conversations blended into a constant hum that filled every corner of the room. Under normal circumstances, I probably would've turned around and left. My head was already crowded enough without adding another hundred voices to it, but the second I spotted Tom sitting near the window with three chemistry books spread across the table and enough notes to prepare for a college lecture, a laugh almost escaped me despite everything weighing on my mind."Please tell me you didn't spend your afternoon preparing for this."Tom glanced up immediately, and the grin that appeared on his face carried the kind of easy warmth that always made people comfortable around him."Depends.""Depends on what?""Whether making color-coded study guides counts as preparing."I stared at th

CHAPTER THIRTY SEVEN SOPHIE’S POVAdrian dragged the suspect list closer before uncapping his pen, and the movement alone was enough to catch my attention because for somebody who had spent the better part of the afternoon avoiding questions, he suddenly looked remarkably interested in answering them. The photographs remained scattered between us, the science-wing discovery still hanging over the table like a storm cloud. Neither of us knew how to approach, yet for the first time since we'd sat down, some of the tension eased from his shoulders."Fine," he said, tapping the paper once. "Let's pretend you're useful and do this properly."The insult should have annoyed me. Instead, it felt suspiciously close to normal, and after spending the entire day watching him act like a stranger, I found myself ridiculously relieved by it."That's a strange way to thank the person carrying this investigation."His head lifted immediately. "Carrying?""Absolutely."The confidence behind my answer
