Chapter 11 - Rain Check

The rain began just as Emma's afternoon studio class ended.

Within minutes, the courtyard outside the architecture building disappeared behind a curtain of silver. Students hurried in every direction, opening umbrellas as they rushed toward the station or the parking lot. Those who had forgotten theirs, like Emma, gathered beneath the entrance canopy and watched the weather with quiet resignation.

Emma hugged her sketch tube against her chest and sighed.

"I forgot my umbrella again."

Beside her, Lily opened a bright yellow umbrella with a practiced flick of her wrist.

"Again?" she asked, laughing. "You really need to stop trusting the weather forecast."

"I know."

"You coming?"

Emma glanced at the rain. It was falling far too heavily to make a run for it.

"I'll wait until it eases."

Lily nodded. "Text me when you get home."

"I will."

With that, Lily disappeared into the rain, leaving Emma alone with dozens of other stranded students.

She leaned against one of the pillars and slipped her phone out of her bag.

A message from Daniel was waiting.

How was class?

Emma smiled before replying.

Long. My brain officially refuses to think anymore.

She had barely locked her phone when it vibrated again.

That bad?

Emma laughed quietly.

Four hours discussing structural concepts.

I'm almost afraid to ask what that means.

Honestly... so am I.

She smiled to herself as she sent the message.

It was strange how easy talking to him had become. Only a week ago, every reply had been carefully considered. Now she answered almost without thinking.

Another message appeared.

Are you home already?

Emma looked up at the rain pounding against the pavement.

Still on campus.

Still?

Rain.

A few seconds passed.

Then her phone began to ring.

Emma stared at the screen.

Daniel.

For a brief moment, she simply looked at his name before answering.

"Hello?"

"Hi."

His voice was warm, carrying the same calmness she remembered from yesterday.

"I figured calling would be easier than typing."

Emma couldn't help smiling.

"I wasn't expecting it."

"Neither was I," Daniel admitted with a quiet laugh. "But I imagined you standing there with nothing to do except watch the rain."

She looked out across the courtyard.

"That's... surprisingly accurate."

"I had a feeling."

The rain drummed steadily against the roof above her.

For a while, neither of them said much. Somehow, the silence didn't feel awkward. It felt comfortable, like they had already grown used to each other's presence.

Daniel was the first to break it.

"So... how long do you think you'll be trapped there?"

Emma laughed.

"There it is."

"What?"

"'So.'"

"I really need to stop starting every conversation like that."

"You really do."

"I'll work on it."

"You've been saying that since our first phone call."

His laughter reached her through the speaker, and she found herself laughing too.

It was an ordinary conversation.

But somehow, it made the gloomy afternoon feel lighter.

Daniel asked about her class, genuinely curious despite admitting he understood almost nothing about architecture.

Emma tried to explain the assignment anyway, using simple words instead of the technical terms her lecturer loved.

"We're redesigning a community library," she said. "My first idea wasn't very practical."

"So you have to start over?"

"Not completely. Just... improve it."

"I've noticed something."

"What?"

"You sound different whenever you talk about architecture."

Emma frowned slightly.

"Different?"

"Happier."

The word caught her off guard.

She looked down at the sketch tube resting beside her feet.

"I guess I really like what I'm studying."

"I can tell."

There was no teasing in his voice.

Just quiet certainty.

For some reason, that simple observation meant more than she expected.

She changed the subject before he could notice how flustered she felt.

"What about you?" she asked. "Shouldn't you be working?"

"I probably should."

"Probably?"

Daniel laughed.

"I'm taking a very responsible break."

Emma smiled.

"If your boss catches you, you're in trouble."

"I think I'll survive."

"You sound very confident."

"I have my reasons."

She shook her head.

"I wish I had that kind of confidence."

"You do."

"I don't."

"I think you just don't see it yet."

Emma fell silent.

No one had ever described her as confident.

Hardworking, maybe.

Responsible.

Quiet.

But confident?

The compliment lingered in her thoughts longer than she expected.

Outside, the rain continued to fall, though not quite as heavily as before.

Students gradually began leaving one by one.

Daniel noticed the change in the background noise.

"Has it slowed down?"

"A little."

"Good."

She smiled.

"Were you worried I'd be stuck here forever?"

"I was worried you'd try walking home in that weather."

Emma laughed.

"...I was considering it."

"I knew it."

"You knew?"

"I've met you."

She couldn't argue with that.

Another comfortable silence settled between them.

Emma watched raindrops slide from the edge of the roof while Daniel remained quietly on the other end of the call.

It occurred to her that he wasn't trying to keep the conversation alive.

He was simply keeping her company.

Somehow, that felt even kinder.

The rain softened into a gentle drizzle.

"I think this is my chance," Emma said, slipping her phone between her shoulder and cheek as she adjusted her bag.

"Before you go..."

"Hm?"

"Promise me something."

She smiled.

"What is it?"

"Buy an umbrella."

Emma looked at the small notebook she had been planning to hold over her head.

A laugh escaped before she could stop it.

"I probably should."

"You definitely should."

"I'll add it to tomorrow's to-do list."

"I'll ask about it."

"You don't trust me?"

"Not even a little."

She laughed again.

"I can't believe you're already checking up on me."

"I'm just making sure you don't catch a cold."

The warmth in his voice made her smile.

She stepped out from beneath the shelter and into the light drizzle.

"Daniel?"

"Yeah?"

"Thanks."

"For what?"

"For making the wait less boring."

There was a brief pause.

"My pleasure."

Emma looked toward the station entrance across the street.

"I should go."

"Have a safe trip."

"You too."

The call ended.

Emma slipped her phone into her bag and began walking toward the station.

The air smelled of wet pavement, and tiny droplets clung to the sleeves of her cardigan.

Normally, she hated rainy afternoons.

Today...

She wasn't sure she'd remember the rain at all.

She had a feeling that years from now, if someone asked about this day, she wouldn't remember getting caught in a storm.

She would remember the phone call instead.

Emma laughed softly, the sound light and a little breathless, and immediately brushed the moment away like it had never happened.“Ignore that,” she said, pressing a quick kiss to the corner of Daniel’s mouth. “I get dramatic when I’m… distracted.” She rolled her hips once against him, playful, as if the vulnerability from a second ago had never existed. “You can continue being very distracting now.”Daniel looked at her for a moment longer, quiet and steady. Whatever he saw in her face, he chose not to press. He simply finished what he had started—slow, deep, careful strokes that left both of them quiet and spent—then stayed. He didn’t pull away. He didn’t reach for his clothes. He drew her against his chest, one arm around her waist, and let the silence settle between them.Emma’s breathing evened out first. Her fingers traced idle patterns over his collarbone until they stilled. Daniel’s hand moved once through her hair, then rested there. Neither of them spoke again. The city ligh

  • The Stranger I Choose   Chapter 24 – Twenty-Four

Daniel still held the open wallet when Emma stepped out of the bathroom. The soft click of the door was the only sound in the suite for a moment. His eyes stayed on the ID, on the date that refused to become anything else.“You’re twenty-one,” he said quietly.Emma’s smile faded. She saw the wallet in his hand and the careful way he closed it before setting it on the table.“Daniel—”“On the app you put twenty-four.” His voice stayed even, the same measured tone he used in boardrooms when something unexpected landed on the table. No raised volume. No sharp edge. Just calm, deliberate observation. “Three years.”She swallowed. “I know.”He looked at her for a long second, studying her the way he studied contracts that didn’t quite add up. “Why?”Emma took a small step closer. “Because every time I put my real age, the messages either stopped or turned into something I didn’t want. I wanted someone who would talk to me like a person first. And you did.”Daniel exhaled slowly through his

The hotel room door had barely clicked shut before Daniel reached for her.Not gently. Not cautiously. As though every ounce of restraint he'd carried over the past few weeks had finally slipped through his fingers."Emma..."Her name barely left his lips before they were on hers. She laughed in surprise, the sound disappearing into the kiss."So much," she managed between breaths, "for being the gentleman.""I've been the gentleman all evening.""And now?""I've run out of patience."She smiled against his lips."I noticed."His forehead rested against hers for only a heartbeat before he kissed her again. This time, slower.Longer.Emma's fingers found the lapels of his blazer, pulling him impossibly close. She could feel his heartbeat.Fast.Almost as fast as hers. The realization made her smile."So," she whispered."So?""You were pretending.""I was.""At dinner.""Yes.""In the parking garage.""Yes."She looked up at him with a teasing smile."And the whole drive here?"Daniel

Daniel opened the passenger door for her.Emma smiled as she slipped into the seat."Thank you.""My pleasure."He closed the door gently before walking around to the driver's side. The soft thud of both doors closing wrapped them in silence. The basement parking garage was nearly empty.Rows of concrete pillars stretched beneath the restaurant, washed in cool fluorescent light. Somewhere in the distance, an engine echoed before fading away again.Daniel rested both hands on the steering wheel.Almost absentmindedly, he pressed the ignition. The engine came to life.A second later, he switched it off.Emma glanced at him, unable to hide a smile."...Changed your mind?"A quiet laugh escaped him."I suppose I did."Neither of them reached for their seatbelts.Neither seemed particularly eager to leave. The silence between them wasn't awkward anymore. It was comfortable.Full.Emma leaned back against the seat."I had a really nice time."Daniel turned toward her."I'm glad."She shook

Emma spent exactly thirty-two minutes deciding what to wear. She knew because she'd checked the clock twice. Not because Daniel had told her where they were going. He hadn't.Her phone buzzed.Daniel: Are you free Saturday evening?A smile tugged at her lips.Emma: I think so.His reply came almost immediately.Daniel: Good. She frowned.Good? That was it?Before she could overthink it, another message appeared.Daniel: I'd like to take you on a proper date.Emma couldn't stop herself from smiling.Emma: I thought we'd already been on dates.Daniel: Not officially.Emma: What's the difference? The typing bubble appeared.Disappeared.Appeared again.Daniel: Before, I was hoping you'd say yes.Her heart skipped.Emma: And now? This time, he took a little longer to answer. Then—Daniel: Now I know you will.Emma buried her face in her pillow."...He's impossible."And somehow, thirty-two minutes later, she was still standing in front of her mirror wondering whether the navy dress looked
