Neither of them noticed they had finished their drinks.

Emma glanced down at her empty mug.

Daniel's coffee cup was empty too.

For a brief moment, they simply sat there.

The conversation had finally reached its first natural pause.

"So..." Daniel said.

Emma laughed.

"There it is again."

"What?"

"'So.'"

"I really need a better transition."

"You do."

Daniel smiled.

"I'll work on it."

Another silence settled between them.

Not awkward.

Just... uncertain.

Was this where they said goodbye?

Daniel looked toward the café window before turning back to Emma.

"Do you have to go home right away?"

Emma thought for a moment.

"Not really."

"I don't either."

He hesitated.

"Would you like to walk for a bit?"

Emma smiled.

"I'd like that."

Daniel stood first, picking up both trays before Emma could reach for hers.

"I can carry mine."

"I know."

"But I was already standing."

Emma watched him walk toward the return counter.

For some reason...

That simple gesture made her smile.

-

The afternoon air was cooler than before.

They walked side by side along a quiet riverside path, neither feeling the need to fill every second with conversation.

A gentle breeze stirred the trees overhead.

People passed them from time to time—families with children, couples holding hands, a man jogging with his dog.

Emma looked around.

"It's nice here."

"It is."

"Do you come here often?"

Daniel shook his head.

"Not as often as I'd like."

She nodded.

"I think I'd like this place."

"I had a feeling."

"You did?"

"You seem like someone who enjoys quiet places."

Emma smiled.

"You figured that out already?"

"I'm starting to."

She looked ahead.

"So am I."

They continued walking.

At one point, Emma slowed without realizing it.

She had stopped to admire an old brick building across the street.

Daniel noticed.

"What is it?"

"I like that building."

He looked across the road.

"The old one?"

She nodded.

"I love the windows."

Daniel studied them for a moment.

"They're... windows."

Emma laughed.

"They're arched."

"Oh."

"The details around the frames are beautiful."

He looked again.

This time, more carefully.

"I think I see what you mean."

Emma smiled.

"You don't."

"I don't."

"But I'm trying."

She laughed.

"I appreciate the effort."

-

A few blocks later, they passed a small bakery.

The scent of fresh bread drifted onto the sidewalk.

Daniel glanced through the display window.

"Should I finally try your famous salt bread?"

Emma followed his gaze before smiling.

"Not today."

"Why not?"

"It's not from my bakery."

Daniel looked at her.

"You can tell?"

"Of course."

"Just by looking?"

She nodded confidently.

"I know my bread."

Daniel laughed.

"I believe you."

She smiled.

"I'll bring you some someday."

"I'll hold you to that."

-

They kept walking until they reached the station entrance.

Emma stopped.

"I should go."

Daniel nodded.

"I figured."

For a second, they simply stood there.

Neither seemed quite sure how to end the afternoon.

Daniel almost offered a handshake.

Then immediately decided against it.

Emma noticed him hesitate and smiled.

"What?"

"I almost shook your hand again."

She laughed.

"That would've been a little strange."

"A little."

Another quiet moment passed.

Finally, Daniel smiled.

"Text me when you get home."

Emma nodded.

"I will."

"And..."

He hesitated.

"I'm glad today happened."

Emma looked at him for a second before smiling.

"Me too."

The station announcement echoed in the distance.

"I should go."

"You should."

Emma took a few steps toward the entrance before turning around.

Daniel was still standing exactly where she'd left him.

He lifted a hand in a small wave.

She waved back before disappearing into the station.

-

Daniel didn't leave immediately.

He waited until the train pulled away.

Only then did he walk back toward the parking lot.

He found himself smiling for no particular reason.

No.

That wasn't true.

He knew exactly why.

-

Emma found a seat beside the train window.

The city slowly drifted past outside.

She rested her head against the glass.

Her phone vibrated.

A smile appeared before she even unlocked it.

Daniel: Has your train left already?

Emma laughed quietly.

She typed back.

Emma: I thought you said to text when I got home.

His reply came almost instantly.

Daniel: I did.

I was just wondering if you were still smiling.

Emma stared at the message.

Without realizing it...

She touched the corner of her lips.

She was.

Very much so.

  • The Stranger I Choose   Chapter 25 – Morning Dumplings

Emma laughed softly, the sound light and a little breathless, and immediately brushed the moment away like it had never happened.“Ignore that,” she said, pressing a quick kiss to the corner of Daniel’s mouth. “I get dramatic when I’m… distracted.” She rolled her hips once against him, playful, as if the vulnerability from a second ago had never existed. “You can continue being very distracting now.”Daniel looked at her for a moment longer, quiet and steady. Whatever he saw in her face, he chose not to press. He simply finished what he had started—slow, deep, careful strokes that left both of them quiet and spent—then stayed. He didn’t pull away. He didn’t reach for his clothes. He drew her against his chest, one arm around her waist, and let the silence settle between them.Emma’s breathing evened out first. Her fingers traced idle patterns over his collarbone until they stilled. Daniel’s hand moved once through her hair, then rested there. Neither of them spoke again. The city ligh

  • The Stranger I Choose   Chapter 24 – Twenty-Four

Daniel still held the open wallet when Emma stepped out of the bathroom. The soft click of the door was the only sound in the suite for a moment. His eyes stayed on the ID, on the date that refused to become anything else.“You’re twenty-one,” he said quietly.Emma’s smile faded. She saw the wallet in his hand and the careful way he closed it before setting it on the table.“Daniel—”“On the app you put twenty-four.” His voice stayed even, the same measured tone he used in boardrooms when something unexpected landed on the table. No raised volume. No sharp edge. Just calm, deliberate observation. “Three years.”She swallowed. “I know.”He looked at her for a long second, studying her the way he studied contracts that didn’t quite add up. “Why?”Emma took a small step closer. “Because every time I put my real age, the messages either stopped or turned into something I didn’t want. I wanted someone who would talk to me like a person first. And you did.”Daniel exhaled slowly through his

The hotel room door had barely clicked shut before Daniel reached for her.Not gently. Not cautiously. As though every ounce of restraint he'd carried over the past few weeks had finally slipped through his fingers."Emma..."Her name barely left his lips before they were on hers. She laughed in surprise, the sound disappearing into the kiss."So much," she managed between breaths, "for being the gentleman.""I've been the gentleman all evening.""And now?""I've run out of patience."She smiled against his lips."I noticed."His forehead rested against hers for only a heartbeat before he kissed her again. This time, slower.Longer.Emma's fingers found the lapels of his blazer, pulling him impossibly close. She could feel his heartbeat.Fast.Almost as fast as hers. The realization made her smile."So," she whispered."So?""You were pretending.""I was.""At dinner.""Yes.""In the parking garage.""Yes."She looked up at him with a teasing smile."And the whole drive here?"Daniel

Daniel opened the passenger door for her.Emma smiled as she slipped into the seat."Thank you.""My pleasure."He closed the door gently before walking around to the driver's side. The soft thud of both doors closing wrapped them in silence. The basement parking garage was nearly empty.Rows of concrete pillars stretched beneath the restaurant, washed in cool fluorescent light. Somewhere in the distance, an engine echoed before fading away again.Daniel rested both hands on the steering wheel.Almost absentmindedly, he pressed the ignition. The engine came to life.A second later, he switched it off.Emma glanced at him, unable to hide a smile."...Changed your mind?"A quiet laugh escaped him."I suppose I did."Neither of them reached for their seatbelts.Neither seemed particularly eager to leave. The silence between them wasn't awkward anymore. It was comfortable.Full.Emma leaned back against the seat."I had a really nice time."Daniel turned toward her."I'm glad."She shook
