Chapter 2

Author: Briar King
"Mr. McGraw, that isn't what I meant.

"I handled this badly tonight.

"We'll keep the original seating. Mr. and Mrs. Bennett can sit at the adjacent family table.

"Is that enough?"

He said it as though he were granting us a favor.

I looked at him calmly.

"Derek, do you still think I'm fighting over a chair?"

He frowned.

"Then what are you fighting over?"

Even Dad closed his eyes when he heard that.

Suddenly, I no longer had the energy to argue.

If Derek still could not understand, he never would.

I stood and helped Mom from her chair.

"Dad, Mom, we're going home."

Paige immediately began to cry.

"Hannah, please don't do this.

"I truly didn't mean any harm.

"I said it without thinking. If you don't like it, my parents won't sit there.

"But if you make a scene like this, how is Derek supposed to face all his relatives?"

I looked at her.

Her eyes were red, and her fingers clenched the tablecloth as if she had suffered some unbearable injustice.

But that expression would never fool me again.

"Paige Bennett, don't you disgust yourself putting on this performance?"

Paige went pale.

Derek's voice turned cold at once.

"Hannah!"

I gave a humorless laugh. "Derek, stop shouting.

"I've heard enough."

With that, I guided my parents toward the door.

Derek followed us into the foyer and seized my wrist.

"If you walk out that door tonight, both families will be humiliated!"

I turned back to him.

"Derek, you humiliated yourself.

"Let go."

Panic flickered in his eyes.

"Hannah, we're getting married in two weeks.

"Don't say something like this because you're angry."

I looked down at his hand.

Seven years earlier, he had held me the same way.

We had just graduated from college, and my parents wanted me to return home and accept a permanent teaching position.

At the train station, Derek had held my hand with red-rimmed eyes and said:

"Hannah, stay.

"I'll build a home with you."

So I stayed.

I ate instant noodles beside him for a month when money was tight.

I sat with him at two in the morning while he revised proposals, and I was there when he earned his first real bonus.

Later, when he bought a house, he said the mortgage would be simpler if only his name went on the deed.

When he ran short during the renovation, I contributed ten thousand dollars I had saved over four years.

My parents quietly gave me another seventy-five hundred, saying a bride should always enter a marriage with something of her own.

That money became the cabinets, sofa, and curtains in Derek's house.

I had truly believed it would become my home.

But that night, I finally understood that a house was not the same thing as a home.

Home was any place where someone was willing to stand between you and harm.

I peeled his fingers from my wrist one by one.

"Derek.

"I'm not acting on impulse.

"I'm finally thinking clearly."

The door closed behind us.

Mrs. Matthews's furious voice carried from inside.

"She isn't even part of this family yet, and she already thinks she can storm out whenever she wants.

"Once she's married in, she'll think she can run the entire house."

Mom's step faltered.

Dad's hand trembled too.

I tightened my hold on them and didn't look back.

When we reached home, I called the manager of the Grand Briar Hotel.

She answered with her usual professional warmth.

"Ms. McGraw, are you calling to confirm the wedding schedule?"

"Ms. Parker, I need to change the purpose of the event."

There was a pause.

"Change the purpose?"

"The wedding is canceled."

I looked at the invoices spread across our kitchen table, and my voice remained steady.

"But don't cancel the dinner.

"Convert it into my parents' thirtieth-anniversary celebration."

The other end of the line was silent for several seconds.

"Ms. McGraw, are you certain?"

"If you hadn't encouraged me, would I ever have made that request?"Derek answered coldly."You were the one who asked."Paige shrieked back."And you were the one who agreed!"Their argument outside the hotel became humiliatingly loud.I didn't go out to watch. The anniversary dinner had begun. My parents sat together at the center of the honor table.I raised the first toast to them.It was not a wedding toast. It was a daughter's apology to the parents she had failed to protect.I stood before them with my glass raised, my hands shaking, unable to stop crying."Dad, Mom."I will never again let anyone humiliate you because of me."Mom rose and pulled me into her arms through her tears."Silly girl."You're home. That's all that matters."Dad lifted his glass and finished it in one swallow. Then he pressed an envelope into my hands. There was a check inside."This is the money we had set aside as your wedding gift."The wedding is gone, but the money is still you

Paige looked as if she had heard the most ridiculous thing in the world.Tears spilled down her face, but her voice sharpened."You're blaming me now, Derek?"When did I ever hold a knife to your throat?"When I said my stomach hurt, you could have stayed home."When I said I was upset, you could have ignored me."When I asked for the honor-table seats, you could have refused."But you came, you comforted me, and you agreed."She pointed at the screen and laughed through her tears."Now that Hannah doesn't want you, you're pushing all the blame onto me?"When you enjoyed being needed by me, why didn't you think I was crossing a line?"When you enjoyed your parents treating me like another daughter, why didn't you say I lacked boundaries?"When you enjoyed Hannah being understanding every single time, why didn't you care that she was hurting?"The ballroom erupted.Derek's expression turned livid.Mrs. Matthews panicked too."Paige, how can you speak to us like that?"P

He stared at me.I continued."If you had truly wanted to marry me, you would never have asked my parents to surrender their places at that dinner."And you would not have reached the hotel today before realizing that I had already stopped waiting for you."With every sentence, more color left his face."You don't love me."You simply cannot accept that the woman who was always reasonable, always waiting, and always giving you another chance has finally refused to cooperate."When the final words landed, his whole body swayed.I picked up the microphone. The screen changed at once. The recording from the family dinner began to play.Mrs. Matthews's voice came first."The person who draws the highest number can ask one small favor of whoever draws the lowest."Then came Paige's half-playful laugh."Derek, let me choose your request for you."At the wedding, my parents should sit at the honor table."Derek's head jerked up.The recording continued."It's only two seats.

"Today's gathering is not a wedding."It is a daughter's overdue expression of gratitude."She thanks her parents for thirty years of standing beside each other, and for telling her, when she was hurting most, that if she did not want to marry, she could always come home."Derek's knees nearly gave way.Mrs. Matthews, however, had already lost control. She shoved past the staff and stormed into the ballroom."Hannah!"Get out here!"The ballroom fell silent.I was standing beside the honor table, raising a glass to my parents. At the sound of her voice, I slowly turned.Derek stood in the doorway. He wore his groom's tuxedo with a boutonniere pinned over his heart.I had spent three hours helping him choose that suit.Back then, I had stood behind him in the mirror with my heart racing.I had thought, This is the man I am going to marry. Now, looking at him again, I felt nothing but calm.Mrs. Matthews rushed up and pointed at me."Hannah, this is outrageous!"Why did

Derek stood at the hotel entrance as if his feet had been nailed to the floor. The smile vanished from his best man's face.Mrs. Matthews drew a sharp breath."What is this?"What is this supposed to be?"She stormed inside and grabbed the nearest staff member by the arm."You made a mistake, didn't you?"This is supposed to be Derek Matthews and Hannah McGraw's wedding!"The employee flinched but remained professional."Ma'am, Ms. McGraw confirmed three days ago that the wedding program was canceled and the dinner was being converted into an anniversary celebration."The decorations, menu, and ballroom presentation all follow Ms. McGraw's final approved plan."Derek's head snapped up.Three days ago.Hannah had truly canceled the wedding three days earlier. It had not been an angry threat. She genuinely no longer wanted him.Derek's face went deathly pale.He remembered the message he had sent at two that morning."I'll come for you as planned tomorrow."I know you'
