LOGIN"Grab her," Mason barked.
Nikolai, his Enforcer, didn't hesitate. He stepped into the strobe lights, snatched me by the waist, and heaved me over his shoulder like a kill from a hunt.
"Let go! What the hell? Mason!" I thrashed, my fists drumming against Nikolai’s back. My silver silk dress rode up, exposing the pale skin of my thighs to the crowded club. "Please! My sister!"
Mason didn't even look back. He carved a path through the sea of shifters, his presence so suffocating the crowd parted like a wounded beast. Nikolai gave me a sharp, bone-rattling shake. The air left my lungs in a pathetic whimper. I went still, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against his shoulder blades.
Not a single soul moved to stop the King of the West Coast from dragging a female out into the salt-thick night.
His black SUV sat idling at the curb. Nikolai tossed me into the leather interior—hard—and slammed the door. The locks engaged with a heavy, metallic snick. Mason rounded the hood, his movements fluid and lethal, and slid into the driver's seat.
He peeled away from the curb, the tires screaming against the asphalt. He didn't look at me. His jaw was set, a hard line of granite in the dim dashboard glow.
"Where..." My voice was a wrecked whisper.
Mason’s eyes flicked to me—cold, forest-green fire. I recoiled into the door, my pulse jumping at the sheer weight of his stare. I forced my spine straight. "Where are you taking me?"
He stayed silent, weaving through the midnight traffic of the Territories.
"Let me out," I rasped. "Dean still has Harper. I don't know what that pig is doing to her!"
Nothing. Just the low hum of the engine.
"Please," I tried again, my hands shaking in my lap. "I didn't mean to cut you. I didn't mean anything at the Unit. Just let me go."
"You didn't do anything," he growled, swinging the wheel into a dark side street.
"Is this for a den?" The thought hit me like a physical blow, making my stomach roll. "Are you throwing me to a brothel to pay Harper’s debt? To work off the moon-gold she owes?"
Mason slammed his palm against the steering wheel, a dark, jagged laugh escaping his throat. "Why would I waste you on a den, Rowan?"
"To break me. To disfigure the Aldridge blood you think I have."
He shook his head, eyes back on the road. "You’re too delicate for the dens, little wolf. You wouldn't last a night."
I didn't wait for him to change his mind. My hand dove for the floorboards, snatching up the lighter Harper had dropped earlier. Click-flick. The flame jumped to life, orange and hungry.
I held the fire inches from my cheek. The heat scorched my skin, the scent of singed peach fuzz filling the cabin.
"Pull over," I commanded, my voice vibrating with a terrifying edge.
"Rowan!" he roared.
"Stop the car! Or I swear to the Moon, I’ll ruin the face you’re so intent on owning!"
"You little idiot!" Mason slammed on the brakes.
The SUV screeched, fishtailing across the wet pavement. I flew forward, my ribs barking against the dashboard with a sickening thud. I collapsed into the footwell, the lighter clattering away as the world spun.
Mason threw the car into park. He lunged over the center console, his teeth bared in a snarl. "What the hell is wrong with you?"
I huddled on the floor, clutching my side, my eyes squeezed shut against the pain. "If I'm just a bargaining chip... if I'm just a body for the dens... I’ll make sure I'm worth nothing to you."
Mason's jaw worked as he reached for a steel box under his seat. He didn't argue. He moved with the clinical efficiency of a predator. He soaked a cloth in a sharp, chemical-smelling liquid.
His hand clamped onto the back of my neck, his fingers digging into my hair to hold me still. My eyes snapped open, wide and terrified, as he pressed the rag over my face. I thrashed, clawing at his wrists, but he was a mountain of muscle and fur.
"Sleep, Rowan," he whispered.
The world turned to gray smoke. My limbs went heavy, sinking into the floorboards until the darkness swallowed me whole.
Mason gripped the wheel, his cut palm stinging as he pulled back onto the main road. He reached into his pocket, pulling out the tiny silver blade he’d taken from me. It felt fragile in his massive hand.
An edge, he thought, a grim smirk tugging at his mouth. She has an edge.
At a red light, he caught the glint of engraving on the razor's spine. He held it up to the dashboard light.
To my sharp-tongued Elaine, whose spirit cuts deeper than this steel. Yours always, Victor.
The air left Mason's lungs.
Elaine. Victor. Rowan.
The pieces of the Syndicate’s greatest mystery clicked together with the force of a landslide. He looked down at the girl unconscious on his floor. She wasn't just a psychologist. She wasn't just a stray.
She was the lost heir. The blood of the Northern Territory.
The world came back in fragments.
The car was gone. The smell of cedar and salt remained. I opened my eyes, blinking against a soft, amber glow. My head felt like it had been kicked by a mule. I tried to sit up, but the warmth of the room pressed me back down into the silk sheets.
Where was I? This wasn't a cell. This wasn't a den.
ROWAN BLAKE POV"Do not play with me, Caleb," I whisper. I grip my glass so hard the pulp shakes. "He went into my room?""Yes," Caleb whispers back. He looks at the kitchen doors like a guard watching for a rival pack. "Daniel walked right to your door last night before he came to my bed. He wanted to scream at you. But you were not there, Rowan. Your bed was empty."My heart drops straight into my stomach. I feel sick. If Daniel went to my room at midnight, he knows I was not sleeping alone. He knows I was down in the Alpha’s den with his own father."Did he see me leave?" I ask. My voice sounds tiny and scared like a lost pup. "Did he see me come out of Mason's secret office door?""No," Caleb says, shaking his head fast. He takes a big gulp of his orange juice. "He just saw an empty mattress. It made him go completely crazy. He came to my quarters smelling like pure rage and silver. That is why he risked everything to bring me up to his private room in the main house. He usually n
Rowan POV"Whoa, easy now," Mason says and his voice shakes like my body shakes. He catches me before I fall onto the desk. His hand is on my chest and his other hand is on my belly and he holds me steady."You okay, Rowan?"I try to talk but no words come out. My brain feels like mush. Some part of me thinks I should feel weird about crying but who even cares right now.Mason pulls me back so I lean on his chest. His arms wrap around me tight. I try to breathe normal but my breath comes out all weird and shaky. And then I feel the wet on my cheeks. Little sobs come out of me. Soft ones. Like a pup crying."It's okay," Mason says soft. His cheek feels rough on my neck. "It's okay, sweetheart."I lean on him more because I need him steady for a minute. But then my eyes open and I breathe deep and I feel so embarrassed.Who cries after their first time? Who does that?"Um," I say. That's all I can say. Just um. So dumb. "I'm okay. I think I..."I stand up straight and push away from Mas
Thwack!A sharp sting snaps across the right side of my backside. The loud slapping sound echoes in the quiet office.I stand straight up, my eyes wide as I gasp for air. Mason just spanked me.I start to spin around to look at him, but he hits me again, a little harder this time."Look at the wall, Rowan," Mason barks, but I can hear the dark pleasure in his voice. "Keep your hands on the desk. Do not move them."I freeze. I stay completely still for a few seconds. Mason lets me think about what just happened so I can choose my next move. And then my brain realizes... it didn't really hurt. He hit the softest part of my hip. It stung and it shocked my system, but moon above, it felt amazing. I liked the sharp sting mixed with the heavy wolf pleasure. I liked it a lot.So, I face the wall again and put my palms right back on the wood. I hide the big smile growing on my face so he can't see it."Good girl, Rowan," Mason whispers. His voice sounds thick and heavy with pure need.I hear
ROWAN BLAKE POVThe Alpha moves like a shadow. He takes four giant strides and hits the oak door with his palm, throwing the latch. The loud clack makes my inner wolf jump. Mason is so big, but he moves like a predator hunting in the woods, not a heavy bear. He has perfect balance. It makes my skin prickle with a little bit of fear. But it makes my blood run hot, too."Rowan," he growls. He locks his massive hands around my waist and yanks my hips against his suit. "What are you doing, walking through my pack house looking like this?""What do you mean?" I say, making my voice sound small and innocent. I love pushing his buttons. It feels like a fun game. "Am I breaking a pack rule?""Yes," he snarls. He gives my hips a small shake that makes a laugh pop out of my mouth. Even when he is mad, his large hands cannot stay still. One palm slides down until his fingers brush the small pearls on my silk underwear. His other hand snakes into the back of my hair, gripping my neck tight to hol
MASON BLAKE POVI keep my feet still on the wood floor until her bedroom door shuts completely. My chest is warm from my wolf trying to break out. I just nod at her before I leave, not showing her how much my teeth are grinding together. I do not look back at Rowan as I walk out into the dark hallway. As soon as the door clicks, I lean my back hard against the wall. I close my eyes and breathe in the scent of cedar and old blood from the hallway. That girl. She is going to drive my wolf insane. It was so hard to look away from her in that room. She just threw her sweater and skirt onto the floor like it was nothing. My wolf was screaming at me to claim her right there, especially after what we did yesterday in the Canyon Stables. But I kept the beast locked up. I forced myself to look at the stone wall while she washed the mountain mud off her skin, talking about her night with the Petrov boy.I open my eyes and walk fast down the stairs to my war room. I have to be smart. Nikolai Pet
"I am listening," I breathe. "Proceed.""You must exercise absolute tactical caution within that fortress, Rowan," Nikolai urges, his hand lifting to hover near my shoulder. "My intent was to deliver this intelligence last night—but our dialogue took a different trajectory. Our timeline is now critical, so forgive the abrupt nature of the transmission, but... the geopolitical balance within the Lunar Syndicate is destabilizing. A massive structural war is mounting across the West Coast Territories—I refuse to let your system be collateral damage. But your current position places you in direct proximity to the primary targets of this purge. My concern is that you will be completely crushed when the lines collapse."I feel the temperature drop in my chest as I process his words, my mind working at maximum velocity. I was fully aware of the friction between the Alphas, but the scale of this threat—"Does your pack comprise one of the executing forces, Nikolai?" I find myself asking, my v
"Wait," Julian says, leaning forward and cutting through my thoughts. "Did you go out on another hunt with Nikolai? When?""Last night," I say, picking up my fork and prodding at my breakfast."What!?"I sigh, meeting Julian's eyes. "Honestly, Julian, if you want to be part of this pack, pay attent
The bonfire crackles, sending sparks dancing into the obsidian sky, but they aren't the only things drawing my attention. There are dozens of shifters milling about—some I recognize from the Aldridge Compound, others entirely unknown. One man, in particular, pulls my gaze like a lunar tide. He look
"We remember you, though!" Amy says, her voice bright with the hum of the champagne. "Because you were our little silver-furred Rowan Blake—"I stiffen at the name. Rowan Blake—the name my mother gave me to hide my bloodline. Only those from my old life, the life before the Syndicate, know that nam
Mason sneers at her, watching the realization of his venomous words shatter her composure."Is that…" Sierra starts, her voice cracking as her pride fights for air. "Is that truly the only value I have to you?" She slowly lowers the piece of sourdough."Yes," he says, leaning back. He savors the su
